Ryan Garber (A0.966279). Resonances was commissioned by the Tennessee Music Teachers Association and premiered at that organization’s 2003 meeting in Nashville by Mark E. Hussung. The three movements bear titles that describe the compositional process at work in each. The first movement, Radically Disparate Segment Accretion, is made up of five contrasting segments that are added to each other, then subtracted from each other, more or less. Descending Scheme Transformation is based on a simple descending theme that is heard virtually through the entire movement in one form or another. The final movement, Unrelenting Metrical Interferences, is thus titled because of the extensive use of syncopation.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a song by British rock band Queen, released as the lead single from their fourth studio album, A Night at the Opera (1975). Written by lead singer Freddie Mercury, the song is a six-minute suite, consisting of an introduction, a ballad segment, an operatic passage, a hard rock part and a reflective coda. It is one of the few progressive rock songs of the 1970s to have proved accessible to a mainstream audience. Mercury referred to Bohemian Rhapsody as a mock opera that resulted from the combination of three songs he had written. The song parodies elements of opera with bombastic choruses, sarcastic recitative, and distorted Italian operatic phrases. Lyrical references include Scaramouche, the fandango, Galileo Galilei, Figaro, and Beelzebub, with cries of Bismillah! Although critical reaction was initially mixed, retrospective reviews have acclaimed Bohemian Rhapsody one of the greatest songs of all time, and it is often regarded as the band's signature song. Featured to magnificent effect in the film 'Wayne's World' (and others) the song's popularity is worldwide and this arrangement has been created in preparation for the 50th anniversary in 2025, featuring supplemental parts for E flat clarinet, soprano and bass saxophones and European transpositions.

It was popularized by Fats Waller, who recorded it in 1935 at the height of his fame. It is one of several songs from the Harlem Renaissance featured in the Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin'. American Public Media's business-news program, Marketplace, uses a portion of Fats Waller's version to open its weekly letters-from-listeners segment. Composed by Felicity Mazur-Park for performance by David Aaron Preston in fulfillment of the 2024 American Guild of Organists Student Commissioning Project.Ti Appartengo is based on Carlo Gesualdo's madrigal Io Parto e Non Più Dissi, which was written before, but published after Gesualdo's famous murder of his adulterous wife and her lover. In the madrigal, Gesualdo pronounces that he is leaving, but later decides not to leave when he sees that his wife (referenced as the mythological Chloris) is sad and depressed at the prospect of his absence. She is dependent on his love for her personal happiness. In essence, she belongs to him, as my work's title suggests. Compositionally, I segment portions of the madrigal and its text. I add quartal and quintal harmonies and develop selected motivic fragments through retrograde, inversion, and sequencing to paint the drama.

Bernstein's ability to seamlessly blend diverse musical genres, from classical to jazz, resonates in the stylistic pluralism of this piece. Each movement offers a distinct musical landscape, reminiscent of Bernstein's kaleidoscopic score for West Side Story, where classical and contemporary idioms collide and coalesce into a vibrant sonic tapestry. Echoes of Charles Ives can be heard in the fragmented, juxtaposed themes and the adventurous harmonic language that defies traditional expectations. Like Ives' Three Places in New England, this composition revels in the collision of disparate musical elements, creating a rich tapestry that reflects the complexity and plurality of the modern musical landscape. Ives’ technique of layering different melodies and harmonies simultaneously is reflected in several movements where multiple key centers overlap, creating a soundscape that is at once disorienting and captivating. Tik, Tik, Tik, Tik, Tik, Tik invites listeners to experience a post-modern journey through sound, where each movement stands as an independent piece, yet contributes to a greater whole. The brevity of each segment—each capturing a distinct emotional and harmonic essence—echoes the concept of musical snapshots, offering a fleeting yet profound exploration of the vast possibilities within the twelve keys.
