The songs were written over a period of some eighteen months. The Shepherd Lad was finished on February 29, 2008. The Round Day and Magdalene’s Song were completed in Brooklyn on June 11, 2009, the music having been originally sketched-out on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2008, at Putnam Valley, New York. In the first song, The Round Day, the singer hears the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sings to the glory of God throughout the day. The text was written on June 7, 2008. In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.†The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).

As I Out Rode This Enderes Night is a companion carol to the well-known and very popular Lully, Lullay, also known as the Coventry Carol. Both carols were part of the Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The pageant was a mystery play regularly performed in the English city of Coventry from the early 15th Century until around the middle of the 16th Century. The Pageant also included a third carol beginning with the line Down from Heaven, from Heaven so High.The mystery plays of medieval Europe were traditionally created and performed by craft guilds based in the larger cities. These mystery plays focused on the representation of stories from the Bible, told in the local vernacular rather than in Latin. They told of subjects such as the Creation, the Nativity, the Passion and the Last Judgment.The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors depicted the Christmas story, covering events from the Annunciation through to the Massacre of the Innocents. Lully, Lullay refers to the latter event in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two, in Bethlehem, to be killed. As I Out Rode and Down from Heaven referred to the angel’s announcement, to shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem, concerning the birth of the Christ child and the subsequent visit by the shepherds to the manger, where they found the baby with Mary and Joseph.Today, the two shepherds’ songs are often combined into a single carol with the title As I Out Rode This Enderes Night or The Coventry Shepherds Carol.This new SATB-with-descant arrangement (the original was scored for treble, tenor and bass) incorporates an additional three verses, the lyrics of which are an adaptation of the dialogue from the pageant that came between the two songs of the shepherds.

This is the twenty-ninth volume of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all  volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. The initial conflict between them points out the two main themes of the story: (1) God sent His Son as the Lamb of God to pay the price for sin; and (2) Even in difficult times, God is still in control. The story ends with them at the manger seeing Christ just after He was born. The drama can be performed by only three people. They can sing the solo parts in the songs, or the children's choir and additional soloists can sing all of the music. Several of the songs have optional two-part harmony. Performance time is 30-35 min.

(An easier alternate version of the RH arpeggios is included.) It ends piano in a similar style to the beginning. The arranger is an active church musician. Many of the songs are just a few seconds long, a few are somewhat longer in the spirit of these precious poetic miniatures. Listeners familiar with the chamber repertoire will recognize the reference in these songs to Schubert's The Shepherd on the Rock, also for Soprano, Clarinet and Piano.
