Small Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.869266 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz,Latin,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 73 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #2019061. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869266). Instrumentation: Alto sax solo and orchestra, 2222-4231-perc-drum set-strings Program note. Maestro Max Hobart called me in the spring of 2009 and told me to check out this young jazz phenom on the saxophone named Grace Kelly. I said OK, that’s cool. That summer we went to the Regatta Bar in Harvard Square to hear her play with her band, and I was duly impressed by her musicality, soulfulness and chops. Max asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for her and the Wellesley Symphony. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. One of the most cherished jazz records in my vast collection is the collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter entitled Focus. Eddie, who used to be an arranger for the Benny Goodman Band in the forties, went on to create the Sauter Finegan Band in the early fifties. The band was one of the first to include the piccolo, oboe, bassoon, harp, celesta, French horn, tuba, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, timpani, and other unusual symphonic instruments in the standard big band format of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section of piano, bass and drum set. On the album Focus Eddie Sauter composed seven tracks of music for string orchestra and rhythm section. Stan Getz did not have a written part - he just improvised over the written music. If you are not familiar with this recording, then you will do yourself a huge favor if you go find it and add it to your own CD collection. The music is phenomenal and Stan is on top of his game, soaring above the strings with endless melodic inventions, flights of imagination and whimsy! It is one of those desert island CDs one should not be without. When I emailed Grace about this project and mentioned Stan Getz’s Focus, she said, It’s one of my favorite albums. So, we got off on a positive note immediately. My work, Focus on Grace … Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra, is very much inspired both by the Stan Getz album and by the performances I heard of Grace and her band. The first movement is based on a funk groove in D minor: Grace’s part is initially written-out but she improvises freely in the coda. The second movement is a boss nova: as in the Stan Getz album, Grace does not have a written part but improvises over a set of chord changes provided by the orchestra. The third and last movement is an Afro-Cuban groove in six-eight: Grace has a written melody at first but soon launches into improvisation on a 12-bar blues in F. She ends the concerto in a free cadenza to show off her virtuosity and saxophone chops. ENJOY!!!

He Said Sam,You're Out of Focus by Paul Burnell.Composed 2013 for low wind and/or brass instruments in six parts with optional drone and suspended cymbalDuration: 4:20Score in CThe combination of instruments is determined by the performers. The following are suggestions for possible part allocations:1 & 4 - alto saxophone, tenor horn, french horn, trombone2 & 5 - tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, bassoon, euphonium, trombone3 & 6 - tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, bassoon, bass trombone, tubaInstruments 1-3 may be slightly separated from instruments 4-6In the final bar, each player repeats their note several times. Each taking a breath after each note, and making no attempt to coordinate with other players, but ensuring there is an overall gradual diminuendo.Optional: other instruments play a drone on G throughout. If there are no instruments playing a drone, then Part 6 plays a concert G for two bars at the beginning. Also optional: a roll on a suspended cymbal throughout, with a crescendo in the bar before each rehearsal letter, and a diminuendo in the following bar.Programme note:He Said Sam,You're Out of Focus is a companion piece to And I Said HeyTed,You're Pixelated. This piece has taken a short extract from a 19th Century piece and obscured the identity of it by elongating it and compressing the pitch range.

It Is Not Death to Die - Orchestration
Small Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.976717 Composed by Robert Myers. Contempo…
(+)
Small Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.976717 Composed by Robert Myers. Contemporary,Easter,Sacred. Score and parts. 67 pages. WheatMyer Music #4794639. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976717). It Is Not Death to Die is a new setting of French poet Henri Abraham César Malan's Non, ce n'est pas mourir as translated by George Washington Bethune and adapted for this work. Why this text? It first came to my notice shortly after the passing of Billy Graham, who was known to paraphrase D. L. Moody, Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.Graham's bold proclamation and Malan's poetry motivated me to focus anew on the resurrection, re-remembering it as the pivotal element of the Christian faith. For if there is no resurrection, Paul says in 1 Cor 15, our faith is useless. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead! Unfortunately, singing about heaven has, perhaps, been neglected of recent decades. We seem to have focused more on the already to the detriment of the not yet. But it is important to remember that this life is not all there is! Quoting Paul again, the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Rom 8:18). Yet, if Christ delays, the grim inevitability of our transition into eternity is a certain experience we all face. Malan's poetry so poignantly and eloquently captures this tension that it compelled me to compose a fresh musical setting that attempts to captures the mixture of dread and hope borne out in the acclamation that death is swallowed up in victory! I pray that this setting aids the Church to remember the great hope and promise Christ has granted us: O Death, where is your victory? O Death, where is your sting?_______________________________________________________________________________________________The music opens with a C# diminished chord in a very still and somber texture reflective of grief. The text is introduced with the first of two main motives, a rising 4-note outline of B minor in a triple repetition of It Is Not Death. As each stanza proceeds the music concludes on the second motive, a 5-note descending span of a minor 7th in Bb Lydian. The energy and mood of the music gradually shift over the five stanzas, as the focus moves from this life to the next; the texture thickens, the harmony expands, and the dynamic grows into the music’s pinnacle on reign with You on high! The music closes on a reprise of the opening section, simultaneously mindful of our mortality and our eternity.Available with orchestral (this version) or piano accompaniment, It Is Not Death to Die is a fitting close to the Easter season, or is suitable for Ascension Sunday, a funeral or memorial service, or any time in the church year to remind Christians of the central hope of our faith, eternal life in Christ.Robert MyersS.D.G.Orchestration 2 1 1 1 1 2 2 2 1 1 Timp Glock Perc Mark Tree, Sus Cym, Crash Cym, Snare, Bass Drum, Mid Tom, Triangle, Tam Tam Piano Strings

Melody: Sequences - Perform, Compose, Understand Series. This pack comprises a piece called Thanks, Ludwig, worksheets and questions which relate to the piece. It is all about understanding melodic sequences.Welcome to the PCU Series for classroom-based groups. This series focuses on learning by doing; there are many accomplished performers within our school classrooms throughout the world, but my years of experience has taught me that many of these students learn to play by rote – literally be learning one note followed by another – without gaining full understanding of how the pieces work musically and theoretically. Indeed, some of them can perform to a high standard using this method, but then really struggle with composition and general musical understanding later in their educational careers.I equate this to learning to speak sentences in a foreign language without fully understanding what those sentences actually mean.So who is this book for?It is for music teachers to use with their students who are learning to create exam-level compositions within a school environment. It is ideal for courses such as the American High School Diploma, GCSE, IGCSE, SCS, HKCEE, IB(MYP), SPM, GCEO, CCEF, HKCEE, VSSD, GES or ICSE.It is designed to cater for almost any instrument due to the parts being provided in many different keys and clefs (including tab and bass tab). Drum parts are intentionally not provided as drummers still need to have a good understanding of non-percussive elements such as melody and harmony; I would suggest that they play a keyboard part for the purposes of learning about composition. You can also download backing tracks of all pieces in this series by searching:Classroom Performance educational pack: MELODY backing tracksThese contain parts 2-5, allowing part 1 to be played live over the top. How to use this resourceThis pack comprises three stages, the third of which should be gained from success with the first two:1. PerformingAn original performance piece is provided for mixed classroom ensemble. This piece features a musical device of some kind as its focus. There will obviously be other musical components included within the piece as well, but the main element will be very apparent.2. ComposingWorksheets are provided to enable students to develop their own compositions based on the same focus as the performance piece. Elements of the performance piece are highlighted and short, developmental activities will lead to the students developing their own musical ideas.3. Understanding Summary worksheets are provided to enable students to demonstrate their understanding of the topic. There are two musical elements which appear in all pieces within this PCU series. They are dynamics and articulation. All performance pieces contain them and opportunity is provided to include them within the composing exercises as well.Printing and CopyingThe purchaser may print or copy all pages of this resource as required, but must not distribute to others. It is advised to produce resources for students as follows:* Print which ever parts are needed to facilitate a performance* Produce a booklet containing the title page, score and worksheets. The performance piece could also be used for the performing component of your examined course as well if appropriate.** Also look out for the other packs in the PCU Series which cover melody, rhythm, structure, texture and harmony. Orchestraining No. 2 [Orchestra]

Chamber Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1432016 By Juan Maria Solare. By Juan Maria Solare. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Historic,Instructional. 18 pages. Juan Maria Solare #1012496. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.1432016). Orchestraining is a cycle of orchestral studies, each focusing on different aspects of performance. These studies are specifically designed for non-professional orchestras, although any orchestra will improve by playing some of these pieces during rehearsals. It is always necessary to pay attention to intonation and many other aspects of orchestral performance. In addition, these studies are also useful for orchestral conducting students. For example, it is essential to know how to conduct a simultaneous attack of a chord that does not begin on the first beat, but a eighth note after the third beat.I began writing these studies around 2013, when I took over the direction of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft and noticed the complete absence of repertoire of this kind. As a pianist, I am accustomed to studies by Carl Czerny or playing scales. Each individual instrumentalist knows studies of technique for their instrument. However, there are no, or at least I am not aware of, similar studies for orchestral performance technique and the specific difficulties of ensemble playing that it requires. The cycle Orchestraining aims to fill this gap. This second orchestral etude focus on tuning / intonation.

Pitch and Rhythm - Treble Clef, Diatonic (Sight Reading Exercise Book)

Large Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Banjo,Baritone Saxophone,Clarinet,English Horn,Flute,Guitar,Harpsichord,Marimba,Oboe,Organ,Piano,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone,Treble Clef Instrument,Trumpet,Ukulele,Vibraphone,Violin,Xylophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.931832 Composed by Nathan Petitpas - Dots and Beams. Instructional. Score and parts. 124 pages. Dots and Beams #4269045. Published by Dots and Beams (A0.931832). Dots and Beams creates a wide variety of reading materials for musicians at all skill levels and for all instruments. The goal of Dots and Beams is to break music down into its elements and provide reading material focused on systematically developing each element in isolation. These books can be used in any number of ways and are an invaluable tool for creative musicians who enjoy inventing new exercises. In addition, these books make excellent, thoughtfully graduated sight-reading material for a wide range of ability levels from student to professional. This collection presents its user with a series of notes on a treble staff in the context of increasingly complex rhythmic material. The pitch material in this book is entirely diatonic with a space left at the beginning of each system in which one can write a key signature. Early chapters use only notes on the staff while subsequent chapters begin to add notes on ledger lines above and below the staff. Each chapter contains two exercises in each of the following time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8. This gives exercises in 2, 3, and 4 beats per bar in both simple and compound meters. From chapter to chapter the conceptual difficulty of the rhythmic material increases. The exercises in this collection are intentionally aimless, wandering, and difficult to internalize. They resemble standard melodies on the surface but don’t emphasize any particular tonal centre or harmonic movement. They are designed this way for several reasons. In keeping the melodic material as non-specific as possible the door is left open for the materials to be used in conjunction with any number of exercises, something that would be much more difficult with a composition that dictates the harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic phrasing. It also allows the user to read the exercises in any key signature, making this a great tool to help students learn to think in different keys. The unpredictability of these exercises also forces the user to process every note and rhythm as its own event without relying on pattern recognition or melodic and harmonic tendencies to help in figuring out the notes and rhythms. While I absolutely agree that the skill of predicting music’s direction from harmonic and melodic cues is an essential skill for any musician to develop, I think we will all agree that resources for this type of reading practice are already abundant. This collection, on the other hand, is designed to develop the user’s ability to process raw musical data. Once this skill is strengthened and internalized it is my belief that the act of reading more predictable and typically melodic music will be made much easier as the processing of notes and rhythms will be second nature, allowing the musician to focus on musicality. This book is a supplement to practising sight-reading using real music, not a replacement; I encourage you to use both. If this material is being used to practice sight-reading, it is encouraged to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a long period of time. The goal in practising sight-reading is not to learn the material but to develop the skill of reading new material. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Read each exercise in all 15 key signatures from 7 flats to 7 sharps. Practice key changes by writing in a different key signature for each system. Increase the challenge of the previous exercise by using a metronome on weak beats. For example, instead of putting the metronome click on each quarter-note in 4/4, play the exercise with the metronome giving the second eighth note of each beat, or the last sixteenth note, or beats 2 and 4. Be creative with this one, the possib.
