Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977042). At the request of a friend, this piece incorporates the melody of an old popular song from Taiwan’s Japanese period. It is a simple folk-like melody with words based on the image of flowers that were washed to the ground during a rainy night. Rain and Flowers is neither an arrangement nor a traditional theme and variations. Instead, it is a series of free improvisations on ideas from the song. Some of those ideas are musical, while others relate to images or meanings in the lyrics. Because I think the lyrics contain a sense of sadness and loss, there are times when that emotion comes through. The image of flower petals strewn on the ground was an important inspiration because it can be seen as being both beautiful and pitiful, or even tragic. Also, those petals can be contemplated in silence after the storm, or during the time when they are begin blown by the driving rain and fierce winds. For that reason, I portray various types of rain and wind as the piece progresses. However, because the original song was a simple melody written after the storm, that is where this piece ends, with a more obvious playing of the melody, though still in an improvisatory and folk-like way. The single downloadable file for this piece contains both the full score and violin part.

My first acquaintance with Lars Ek Hot Trio refers to the autumn of 1982. It took place in Bergen during the annual enrollment of accordionist by the name TREKKSPILLGALLA In Grieghallen where Lars Ek until now been unknown. It has become a tradition with a Swedish touch during these autumn hits. Strong names Ebbe Jularbo, Roland Cedermark, Norwegian-Swede Olaf Wernersen to name a few. But no one has so far been stormed the audience as Lars Ek Hot Trio did. To experience the original Frosini, Nisse Lind, Ragnar Sundquist represents something new and good in the Accordion music. Genuine original accordion music that we remember so dearly good from the 1930-40's and which had been lying idle since then. The above-mentioned debut has caused several national border crossings for the trio. The last is the spring tour in western Norway this year (1985), where I had the honor to accompany the ensemble from Nor fjord Bergen. An experience for both the audience and the musicians. Yet we feel the turbulence after Lasses bellows murmur down the valley-society’s country. At Voss reached climax when history's first Trekkspill-fan-club became a fact of Lars Ek Fan Club. In alternating western country natural emanation from our flower at the fjord to the mountain huge snowstorm where we stood firm on the Vika Mountain on our way to Voss. After waiting up to a snow plow and colon driving, Lars Ek experience a new Norway. These strong impression of the natural contrasts mixed with the local population intimacy and spontaneity and contact Lasse put on the idea of a Norway-LP, which therefore now been completed in record time. Finally, I would quote one of Norway's largest newspapers to: Lars Ek is the best we have heard - and seen - on the accordion. Do not let it go three more years before he is in Bergen again. Both parts play the melody for one verse beginning with part one (handbells) on the melody and part two (Boomwhackers®) on harmony. After a short interlude, part two plays the melody for the second verse while part one plays harmony. Liz becomes conflicted with her emotions but eventually decides to release her from the cage that is her home. Liz confronts the girl and tells her that she needs to be free and spread her wings. Katrina is a piece I wrote after the historic category 5 hurricane that made landfall on the coast of Louisiana on August 25, 2005, carrying winds up to 175 mph, causing over 1,800 fatalities and $125 billion in damage. It's a piece I dedicated to my father who was there and lived through it. I tried to capture moments throughout the storm, glimpses through the music, though it is difficult given the immenseness of this massive, destructive storm. The piece begins with swirling winds and a sense of dread and anticipation. The wind begins to pick up, then pauses briefly as the rain begins to fall in rhythmic raindrops. Soon the rain picks up and is joined with the growing fierce winds, building to a peak. The storm begins to calm, followed with the piano playing the final raindrops as they slow and then stop. The piano plays alone as the skies open up and the sun breaks through at the end. The piece includes a full score, flute 1 & 2, oboe, cello, claves and optional rainstick, and a separate piano part (easier to read). Total of 17 pages.

AMAZING GRACE by John Newton for Brass TrioSailor-turned-Anglican cleric John Newton was known for his diary notes, articles for pamphlets, letters, hymns, and sermons, his most famous being Amazing Grace!His path from rebellious young man to pious man began on March 21, 1748, when he experienced a violent storm at sea, nearly capsized, and cried out, The Lord have mercy on us! which surprised him. From that date forward, March 21 became a day of remembrance, thanksgiving, fasting, and prayer.After suffering a severe stroke in 1754, he gave up seafaring and moved to London. As a Cleric, his New Year's sermon of 1773 closely resembles the text he wrote in the Onley Hymns, published in 1779.The American folk-like hymn we know as New Britain did not become commonly associated with Newton's text until 1835, when it was published in The Southern Harmony by American William Walker. By the 1970s, the haunting tune was set to bagpipes. Since then, it has become the most played tune for Remembrance services, funerals, Celebrations of Life, and memorials.This setting includes 5 verses, of which any of Verses 2, 3, or 4 can be repeated. Written in the key of Eb Major, it is in a comfortable key, permitting it to be used as an accompaniment to singing and on its own. The instrumental leads and harmonies differ for each verse.Instrumentation is for British Brass Band instruments of Cornet, Eb Tenor Horn, and Bb Euphonium (TC). After a motivic transition the piece continues with a tuba solo A Shelter In The Time Of Storm. with more open scoring passing the tune around amongst the parts. Another modulation, another tune- this time The Solid Rock in a slower tempo giving resolve and purpose. The Coda is in a fanfare stance gaining more power leading up to the final chord.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1489014). This latter-day Doobie Brothers' tune (as in, after Michael McDonald, who wrote and sings it, joined the band) was released in 1978. It was nominated for a song of the year Grammy but lost out ... to the Doobies' own What A Fool Believes. I've strayed from strict notation rules to avoid a confusing storm of eight rests and tied notes; much of this 12/8 tune is constructed essentially as quater note triplets against a four-beat backdrop.
