It is an odd form in that it does not contain any departure from the central idea; therefore there is no return. The story has a beginning and ending but uses subtle variation to push the idea along its way. .. much the way loving relationships evolve. The equivalent of the story song in classical music is a Poem, and this is what I have called this piece. An inspiration I used for my musical poem was the ocean and itâ€™s repetition of waves as they fall in to the shoreline. I grew up near the ocean and remember how the sounds of the relentless waves used to calm me. While it was the repetitive sound of the sea that moved me as a child, today, I observed that each wave was not the same but in fact slightly different. I was amazed that it seemed that no two waves looked or sounded the same to me. This natural occurrence seemed to mirror my love for wife Carla. Each day was just something a tiny bit different. It was very natural to make these kinds of life experience connections. Bridges that joined nature, love and art. The poem begins slowly and inquisitively and builds through in intensity with loud and mightily passionate moments of emotion before the music comes down peacefully and reflectively, until the last statement played by the violin signifies that the sea is calm once again. This is a loop station compositionÂ for electric violin that I composed for my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2014. Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violinÂ with aÂ Boomerang IIIÂ loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Boss RC-30, Ableton LiveÂ with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you transpose the bass stave up one octave and use an octave pedal for the pizzicato bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although most phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: there are 2 distinct sections. The first is a latin groove with a a highly syncopated chopping grooveÂ and a simple, soaring melodic head. This section can be opened up for a variety of solo ideas from jazzÂ to LatinÂ to funk, before it transitions using a common tone into the bridge, which is more of an epilogue. This section has much more of a heavy rockÂ bent, with a thick stack of string overdubs that mimic an orchestra sitting over an overdriven rhythm groove, and a breakdown where aggressive drum fills are accompanied by rhythmic chugging in the violin. Finally, all of these ideas culminate as the A section melody is re-introduced over the rock groove, building to an ultimate climax.With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. I usually add additional percussive loops when I perform this solo.I have also included three auxiliary string parts, which can be used to perform this piece with a string section or an orchestra. The parts line up with the second section of the tune and replace some of the loops with live parts. She received a degree in commercial music the year before COVID shut everything down, at a time before climate change made blizzards an anomaly here in Central PA. As a result, snow days still existed. I spent one of them doing the first draft of â€œDeep River,â€ her favorite.Later, I decided that if singers engage a cellist for a concert, they might like to program more than one piece for them, so I chose two more water-themed spirituals to complete the set. â€œHis Name So Sweetâ€ is a more meditative version of the song than Iâ€™ve generally heard. I wanted the piano, cello, and briefly the voice to imitate the fountain in the text. The mood is ecstasy, resulting from the fundamental change that baptism is meant to create. â€œDeep Riverâ€ also includes â€œMichael Row The Boat Ashoreâ€ and â€œThe Water Is Wide.â€ The latter isnâ€™t a spiritual, however, taken together the message is that the river is deep, the water is wide, but with (the Archangel?) Michaelâ€™s help, Jordan can be crossed. â€œWade in the Waterâ€ is one of the most well-known spirituals. I focus on the idea of escaping enslavement: the opening is quiet, furtive, maybe even nervous. The Moses in the text can be understood to be Harriet Tubman, who might urge escapees to wade in the water so pursuing dogs couldnâ€™t follow their scent. In my mind, the ending symbolizes that the party has vanished, never to be enslaved again.The first instrumental version of â€œDeep Riverâ€ was for trumpet and piano, performed by my sister, Alicia Thompson, and her son, Justin Griffin, during a church service in Atlanta shortly after I arranged it. After hearing a recording, I took borrowed her idea of adding a repeat (which she did to allow enough time for the ushers to take up collection). The clarinet, cello and piano version was premiered by the Isosceles Trio (Doris Hall-Gulati (clarinet), Sara Male (cello), and me (piano)). When Naima Burrs, violinist and conductor of the Petersburg Symphony, asked if I had any pieces for trio, I created a version for violin, piano and cello. The flute/piano/cello version may have been performed, but if so, nobody has mentioned it to me. Please note that the YouTube version uses a clarinet. The flute version is slightly different, to accommodate the difference in range.P.S. Iâ€™d love to hear that version, if you have a recording of it.

Dark December: Ignis Dei (2002) was commissioned by Maurice and Amy Katz and was written forand is dedicated to Non Sequitur. It is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, vibraphone, and piano, andis subtitled â€œprocessional doubles for mixed sextet.â€ (The word â€œdoublesâ€ is used in the old sense ofâ€œvariations.â€)The source material for the composition is the composer's original hymn tune DOLMEN CREEK(2002), whose text by Margaret Clarkson (Burn in Me, Fire of God) provides the Ignis Dei of thetitle and poetic conception. The poetic conception is one of an emergence of a single inner flame, amida dark landscape.The tune is never heard in its full or straightforward form â€“ instead it is always heard in fragment ortransformation. Its formal structure also provides the dimensions and structures of the four sections.Formally, the work is cast in a single movement as a series of three processionals plus a finalglorification-postlude. The conception of the work is ritualistic in tone, and pushes forward towardsthe end.The opening processional (for the entire sextet) is very slow and distant and sets out transformations ofthe hymn tune in its most abstruse form. Since March 2020 they have been in Lockdown and unable to meet. It was agreed that they would continue to make music through a form of distanced learning. They receive an arrangement from me to work on and are given a date to submit their audio file which is then collated into a whole piece for all of them to listen to. Four Pieces [xxvi-xxix] (2002) for them.Last year Sally as a member of the Schumann Ensemble asked me to write a trio for oboe, viola and piano.
