Lullaby & Fugue, composed by Aris Antoniades.This piece was commissioned by the Sforzando Composers' Collective for the New Asia Chamber Music Society of New York, and was premiered on August 4th, 2017 at the Riverside Church in NYC.When I was presented with the challenge of composing a work combining traditional Chinese instruments with conventional Western instruments, I was quite intrigued: merging different sound-worlds has always been a strong compositional interest of mine. I am fascinated by folk music and, being born and raised on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, much of my music is greatly influenced by my Greek cultural heritage. This piece is no different: I’ve attempted to use the enchanting sound of the Chinese Dulcimer in a way that reminds me of my own home.Lullaby and Fugue is a work inspired by the magical art of story telling. I still remember many of the bedtime stories my grandparents used to tell me when I was young. Their stories were not just entertaining, but also didactic: I follow many of their teachings to this very day, and I believe that these stories have played a vital role in shaping my character. The Lullaby portrays the soothing aspect of a bedtime story, whilst the Fugue represents the hidden, ‘cerebral’ aspect. I would like to thank my friends at the Sforzando Composers Collective for this great opportunity and all of the performers for their time and dedication. Additionally, I would like to thank my mentor, Dr. J. Mark Stambaugh for helping me discover the true magic of counterpoint, back in college. Published by Head and Stem (A0.1355909). Notes on TRIUMVIRATE The term Triumvirate goes back to the time of Julius Caesar and is roughly defined as a group of three men holding political power. In the case of this musical work, it refers to three performers holding great musical power and with equal responsibility. The idea for Triuvirate was sparked at the suggestion of colleague and composer/bassoonist, Kenneth Lieberson who has also composed a duo for bassoon and drum set. Triumvirate represents the closest artistic merger between my rock roots and classical roots that I have ever produced. As in a Triumvirate, the three parts compliment each other. The piano is the centerpiece, providing rhythmic propulsion as well as the harmonic element, the drums provide pulse, dramatic color and pure rhythmic thrust, and the bassoon supplies a prominent melodic role. The work is in the form of a fantasy based on a single one-bar riff heard at the very outset of the piece. As the work unfolds, the riff gets tossed around and is morphed into other motives and more extended episodes. A couple of slower and softer sections offer relief from the more energetic moments. The piece concludes with a prominent statement of the opening main riff. Daniel Burwasser NYC, January, 2024

NOTES on CirclesCircles, for drum quartet, was partly inspired by Latin rock and funk bands such as Santana, Earth, Wind and Fire and Afro-Latin infused groups that were particularly prominent during the 1970s. This work explores the rhythmical intricacies and interplay of that music and in part represents a synthesis of what the composer heard in his youth. Circles is made up of a chain of diverse dance beats or grooves, some of which are heard multiple times in the piece. These grooves feature timbales and congas solos that often trade off with each other.
