For soprano solo and SSAA chorus, organ, cello, synthesizer, the music has a light, ethereal feeling. “Beati†can be taken as a sort of “Blessed are they†prefix for the movements which are not direct quotes from the Beatitudes. This movement begins with the soloist singing in English (“Blessed are the stateless; blessed are the homelessâ€). Next the chorus sings Latin settings of Isaiah 4:6 (“And there shall be a tabernacleâ€) and Psalms 31:7 (“Thou art my refugeâ€). The Latin is set in a sort of mantra-like declamatory style, moving through unison into two-part and finally three. All voice return to the opening theme in English originally sung by the soloist. Then the two concepts are overlaid, the solo motif with the declamatory Latin. The theme is the eternal rest of heaven which is expressed in a beautiful lyric set to a plain but beautiful melody. The accompaniment is intentionally simple with rich, sonorous harmonies, but never loud. It is identical in each verse, bringing the words into primary focus. Though the piece is easy musically, it require skilled use of mezza voce technic, because the vocal part is to be sung softy throughout the song. Fitting as a Call to Worship for Palm Sunday, it is in the form of Call and Response where the congregation (or choir) almost exactly replies to what the leader intones. If a processional gospel is read, the opening two measures could play softly under the narrative and repeat as many times as necessary, or it can just stand on its own as written. The accompaniment is probably most suitable for piano, but it could be played on organ as well. The final page may be duplicated as needed for congregational singing.

The work was written in response to the wartime events of our time, and juxtaposes vocal movements based upon Latin prayers with purely orchestral sections (meditations on wartime subjects). The Latin prayers in this work consist of the Agnus Dei from the Roman Catholic Mass, a prayer which asks God for forgiveness of the 'sins of the world,' and two hymns to the Virgin Mary: Ave Maria and Ave Maris Stella. The concept of the Blessed Mother as the spiritual mother of all humanity is a powerful one which I believe touches us on a deep level. As children, our mothers give us guidance, tenderness, unconditional love and protection in a world where evil exists. In our time, horrific wartime events daily take their toll on innocent civilians, while motherhood is revered in all cultures.
