It is an odd form in that it does not contain any departure from the central idea; therefore there is no return. The story has a beginning and ending but uses subtle variation to push the idea along its way. .. much the way loving relationships evolve. The equivalent of the story song in classical music is a Poem, and this is what I have called this piece. An inspiration I used for my musical poem was the ocean and itâ€™s repetition of waves as they fall in to the shoreline. I grew up near the ocean and remember how the sounds of the relentless waves used tocalm me. While it was the repetitive sound of the sea that moved me as a child, today, I observed that each wave was not the same but in fact slightly different. I was amazed that it seemed that no two waves looked or sounded the same to me. This natural occurrence seemed to mirror my love for wife Carla. Each day was just something a tiny bit different. It was very natural to make these kinds of life experience connections. Bridges that joined nature, love and art. The poem begins slowly and inquisitively and builds through in intensity with loud and mightily passionate moments of emotion before the music comes down peacefully and reflectively, until the last statement played by the violin signifies that the sea is calm once again. He and his fellow students were working on a special project studying contemporary composers whose work engages with climate change, environmentalism, and the natural environment. The students had been asked to read a chapter from David Haskellâ€™s Sounds Wild and Broken and had further been given the following direction to guide them: â€œwe are assigning each of you to a project in which you will seek out song repertoire from a living composer whose work responds to climate change or the natural environment, heightening our connection to and awareness of the natural world. This topic has arisen from a call to Bard faculty to #MakeClimateAClass: Bard faculty are urged to use our collective power as educators to engage with the climate change crisis.â€Jun wrote to me that he was drawn to my music and asked whether any of my songs might fit within this subject area. At the time I had plenty of songs that spoke of the natural world, but none I could categorize as specifically dealing with the classâ€™ more narrow focus, so I offered to write this song on a poem by one of my favorite poets, Carl Sandburg, who even by the early twentieth century was noting the degradation of the natural environment and its impact on life of all kinds trying to adjust to changed circumstances brought on in one way or another by man. I quickly found the poem Buffalo Dusk, seeing how strongly it speaks of the extinction of species and the loss that represents. Jun and his teachers remarked what a â€œbeautiful and sad poemâ€ it was, so in short order I was pleased to present this song to Jun, who gave Buffalo Dusk its first performance in April of 2023 at the Bard Conservatory.

He presumably received his first lessons from his father, who was sonatore di viola at the court of the Gonzaga in that city. Later he got further education probably by Salomone Rossi and Giovanni Battista Buonamente. From 1626 to 1629, he worked as concertmaster in Dresden. In Dresden he worked with Heinrich SchÃ¼tz, who interested him in composing. From 1629 to 1631, he was a prominent member of the electoral court orchestra in Bonn, until he returned to Italy, where he worked in Parma and later in Lucca until 1635. In 1635 he held position at the court of Carlo I Cybo-Malaspina, Prince of Massa, and between 1636 and 1637 in GdaÅ„sk. From 1638 he lived in Vienna, where he died of the plague probably a year later.He is considered to be one of the earliest violin virtuosos and he made many contributions to violin technique. The Carlota referred to in the title and refrain, is the Empress Carlota, who fled to Europe seeking aid for her husband (without success). While she was in Europe, her husband was captured and executed. The words by Vicente Riva Palacios (1832-1896) are a parody on the song AdiÃ³s, Oh Patria MÃa by Ignacio RodrÃguez GalvÃ¡n. The accompaniment is scored for two requintos, guitar, and string bass. A requinto is a small (3/4 sized) melody guitar that is tuned a fourth higher than the normal guitar. If a requinto is not to be found, the parts can be played on regular guitars. This piece is often played during Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) celebrations. Cinco de Mayo is a holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when the peasant army of Mexico defeated a superior force of the mercenary French Imperial troops of Maximiliano. The holiday is not often celebrated in Mexico, but is more often celebrated in the United States among Mexican-Americans in the Southwestern United States.
