Premiered at the Queen's Hall at a Promenade Concert and so successful that it was repeated a month later during the same Proms season.(It became a favourite at the Proms, chalking up 35 performances between 1911 and 1951) Henry Balfour Gardiner (7 November 1877 – 28 June 1950) was a British musician, composer, and teacher.He was born at Kensington (London), began to play at the age of 5 and to compose at 9.Between his conventional education at Charterhouse School and New College, Oxford, where he obtained only a pass degree, Gardiner was a piano student at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, where he was taught by Iwan Knorr and Lazzaro Uzielli, who had been a pupil of Clara Schumann. He belonged to the Frankfurt Group, a circle of composers who studied at the Hoch Conservatory in the late 1890s Gardiner's most important work, possibly, was his promotion of the music of contemporary British and colonial composers, particularly through a series of concerts he personally financed at Queen's Hall London in 1912 to 1913. The composers represented included Arnold Bax, Frederic Austin, Gustav Holst, Percy Grainger, Roger Quilter, Cyril Scott and Norman O'Neill. NOTES on CirclesCircles, for drum quartet, was partly inspired by Latin rock and funk bands such as Santana, Earth, Wind and Fire and Afro-Latin infused groups that were particularly prominent during the 1970s. This work explores the rhythmical intricacies and interplay of that music and in part represents a synthesis of what the composer heard in his youth. Circles is made up of a chain of diverse dance beats or grooves, some of which are heard multiple times in the piece. These grooves feature timbales and congas solos that often trade off with each other. This collection of four short concert pieces for beginners is intended to introduce the new musicians, as well as the audience, to the world of Arabic music in a fun and enjoyable way, and is designed to make the ensemble practice easy and productive. Every piece introduces a scene from Arabic folklore, inviting the little musicians to discover the beauty of Arabic traditions and cultures. In some pieces, the musicians will be asked to perform some simple body percussion, and say some Arabic words, which will add some magic to the music! The first piece titled Dabkeh is a traditional Levantine dance that is still performed at weddings and public events in Arabic countries, in which the dancers hold their hands together and form a circle showing a scene of solidarity and unity. It is a high-energy dance that demands a great amount of physical effort and is usually performed by both men and women. The second piece takes us to a very special period for Arab people, called Ramadan. For a complete month, people enjoy gathering for the Iftar when the sun sets, after long fasting, then attending public events, and organizing cultural gatherings. The third piece is titled Raqsa, which means simply A Dance. The Arabic dance, mainly performed by a female dancer, is full of energy and beauty. Usually accompanied by hand clapping and percussion instruments, and sometimes singing too. The fourth piece takes us to the traditional Arabic wedding ceremonies, which sometimes continue for more than 5 consecutive days. At an Arabic traditional wedding, all the village gathers in the bride's or groom's home, participating in all the details of the preparations for the wedding, bringing food and gifts, and celebrating joyfully with music, songs, and dances.

Danza Queimada: this traditional folk tune from Asturias (Spain) is arranged for two melody instruments and is one of a number of folk tune arrangements by the UK based folk duo Na-Mara.A ‘danza’ is a circle dance in two-time. Written in the the key of G, Danza Queimada can be played as a duet on two mandolins or on any C clef instruments (violins, ukuleles, flutes etc), with the guitar chords accompanying the individual players. We came across this particular tune played by the Asturian band Niundes from their album Enxamás Ye Pa Siempres. Performance tips: this is beginner / intermediate level piece played andante or at a moderate speed. We have added a second melody part to the original tune, and this makes for a nice interplay between the melody instruments. Make sure the top line sings above the second line in the B section. As it is a dance–like tune, so try to keep the tempo even. The guitar accompaniment can be played with strummed chords.Na-Mara (Rob Garcia and Paul McNamara) perform this instrumental piece on mandolin or octave mandola, with guitar accompaniment. We have added a second melody part to the original tune, and this makes a nice interplay between the melody instruments. As it is a dance–like tune, try to keep the tempo even. The guitar accompaniment can be played finger picking style as broken chords. When we play this live, we play the opening stanzas on mandolin alone and then bring in the guitar. We play it as part of three-part set following the An Dro, with our own tune, Canberra Bourrée, and finishing the set with our arrangement of the Galician Muiñeira, Muiñeira de Boal. Na-Mara (Rob Garcia and Paul McNamara) perform this instrumental piece on mandolin or octave mandola, with guitar accompaniment. The five Chinese traditional instruments being used for this ensemble, are: Erhu 二胡 - “Chinese Violin†Yangqin æšç´ - “Chinese Ducimer†Ruan ä¸é˜® - “Chinese Lute†2 Zhengs å¤ç® - “Chinese Zither†The composition of this piece is based on the original musical materials of Bunung布農. The Bunungese is a minority group of natives who live on the island of Formosaå°ç£. Ethnically speaking, they originated from the Micronesian race rather than from the “Hanâ€, the Chinese majority who accounts for ninety-seven percent of the population. The pentatonic mode is often found in Chinese folk tunes, in which a triad chord is seldom found. However, the Bunungese actually “enjoy†the sonority (the pitch and the tone) of the major triad. The modern civilization has yet to adapt to their wild and natural style. Usually, their folk song would be a chorale led by a leading singer, followed by the crowd. In the morning, facing the rising sun, the people with their colourful clothes, gather in a circle and dance to the rhythmic music. Located in far east Asia, the Bunungese may well be the first people to praise the rising sun to celebrate the new century with songs and dances. Published by Andres LLona (A0.1473634). “Golpes Festivos” es una obra para dos sets de percusión, en el que no hay alturas definida solo parches, platillos y accesorios como shaker, cascabeles, vibraslap y bocina. El título para esta obra fue elegido con el fin de crear un ambiente festivo, en el que los sonidos puedan promover un ambiente alegre, y en donde en algunas secciones se pueda imaginar alguna festividad conocida por el uso de algún instrumento, como lo es en el caso de los cascabeles. Esta obra fue creada mayoritariamente a partir de la realización de patrones rítmicos con un tempo estable. Se busca un resultado sonoro vigoroso, energético, agraciado, en el que se demuestre la fuerza de los instrumentos de percusión elegidos.Las principales obras que inspiraron a este compositor para llegar a crear “Golpes Festivos” fueron “Rebonds b”, “Rebonds a” y “Dmaathen” de Iannis Xenakis, principalmente la primera mencionada ya que mantiene un pulso constante, estable, fluido y con patrones rítmicos similares. También la obra de John Cage “Third Construction” sirvió para buscar mas sonoridades y otras formas de construir patrones rítmicos. Además, las Obras de Gene Koshinski como “Dance of the Drums” y “As One” que sirvieron como inspiración de obras de percusión más contemporáneas dentro del siglo XXI. Finalmente, también sirvió como inspiración la obra de Luciano Berio “Circles”.
