Drake Mabry plays an improvisation on the Turkish Kiz ney using contemporary techniques he developed after his traditional training on the instrument in Istanbul. Improvisations (taksims) play an important part in the music for the ney and the term New Taksim refers to the fact that the improvisation is not based on the usual modes but on newly created contemporary performing techniques. Thus the New Taksim adds an original dimension to the tradition of ney playing. This improvisation was recorded in Germany in 2014.

This is a collection of works which include pieces which can be played as solos, duos and ensembles. Written when I was Artist in residence at the Conservatory of Music in Chalons-sur-Saone, France during the academic year 2007-2008, each one page piece is a short musical expression focusing on a specific concept found in contemporary music but written to suit players relatively new to the oboe. These pieces may be included in the normal teaching program and are also perfect for workshops where participants may have very different levels and experience. While these duets are musically satisfying in themselves, they are also etudes which will introduce players to various techniques encountered in more advanced contemporary repertoire. Without being extremely complex technically, they provide challenges in their concept and approach to musicality. They can be played as written, or they may be modified by the teacher and/or performer. Although the compositional details are important, they may be bent with musical taste. For example, improvisations based on the musical material may be inserted; or several movements may be played at the same time. Of course, pieces may be assembled into suites. Feel free to try different tempos, changing tempos, different dynamics, and different methods of sound production, even playing silently. The spatial dimensions of the performance area(s) may also be exploited. These pieces may also be appropriate for use in dance, theater, art, poetry, video, sports etc.

The Three Preludes were a commission by the French Ministry of Culture as a contest piece as part of the requirements for the top teaching diploma in France. The trio was added several months later. There are several ways to perform this piece. The three preludes may be performed by a single oboist, three oboists may take turns playing the preludes and then together play the trio or the trio may be performed by itself. The duration is 5'10.Three Preludes and Prelude Trio was premiered by 60 oboists during January and February 1996 as part of the exam for the French national teaching certificate (C.A.).

The collection includes duets incorporating a variety of contemporary techniques and concepts geared towards beginning players. This duet demonstrates my silent duration style of composition but with less long silences. A perfect introduction to this style. It was originally written for two soprano recorders but is playable on any two like recorders or instruments.

There is interplay between all instruments as well as cadenzas each for the piano and bass clarinet. The work was written as my response to hearing a recording of Edith Piaf singing the Hymne d'Amour. Most of the score is spatially conceived with several sections notated. The duration is 7'30 minutes. Due to the somewhat difficult to read manuscript I have reduced the price.

Published by Drake Mabry (A0.799442). Commissioned by the Theatre Athenor, Drummissimo is a work for four percussionists in two movements. The instruments used are those found in the usual drumset but here divided among four players thus requiring an extremely high level of co-ordination. The first movement is loosely synchronized and functions as a prelude for the second completely synchronized movement. Each percussionist plays short fragments previewing the more developed rhythmic cells to be found later. The second movement begins very sparsely eventually filling up to become a complete drumset rhythmic pattern. The players then gradually change to playing quietly with fingers or thimbles after which they take snare sticks (unnoticed) leading to an explosive and complex rhythmic pattern. From here to the end the rhythmic cells become shorter and shorter until they are reduced to just three sixteenth notes. A brief silence is followed by an explosive final cadence. I can imagine using the element of space in the performing area and maybe moving several times during the performance. The duration is about 3'30.

The clarinets used are the Eb, 2 Bb, alto and bass clarinets. The work was commissioned by the Bourse de la Creation 1996 du Conseil General des Vosges for the Ensemble Variance.. Many French musicians and composers were active at the Cypriot court, and the town of Nicosia became one of the most important centers of the Ars Subtilior style. This piece provides a perfect introduction to the beautiful and mysterious world of this 14th and 15th century musical style. The duration is 3'50. The King, Janus I de Lusignan (1374-1432), was one of the most important figures in the music life of Cyprus. His daughter Anna, upon her marriage to Louis, Count of Geneva, took with her a thick manuscript, written between 1413 and 1426. It consists of 159 folios containing over two hundred polyphonic compositions both sacred and secular. Two peculiarities make this manuscript unique: first, not a single composer is mentioned by name; and second, each work is without exception a unique copy: not one has ever been found in any other manuscript. This, then, is the only record of the Cypriot Ars Subtilior style. The central compositional concern of those working in the Cypriot Ars Subtilior style was the logical, consistent attainment of the polyphonic ideal. Each voice is completely independent of the others, and moves through the polyphonic fabric to form a contour of its own. As to rhythm, Cypriot compositional technique is extremely complex. Ample use was made of rhythmic novelties such as syncopation, color and proportion, and new note symbols permitted the representation of note values that had previously defied graphical rendering. Thus, metric accents in the different voices almost never coincide, and the laws of rhythm were at times out of joint. In fact, a rhythm that was regular and without syncopation would stand out immediately as particularly conspicuous detail. This trio also exists in my adapted versions for either recorders or trombones. Paul Van Nevel has recorded a version for three sackbuts with his Huelgas Ensemble.

It takes several elements from the orchestral piece and treats them as if they were part of a dream Constantin Cavafy might have had while writing his poem titled Ithaca. The work exists in four versions (original, 'A', 'B' & 'C'), all written for low pitched instruments. The duration is 3'50.
