Published by James Marshall Music (A0.913624). English Autumn was composed in Fall/Winter 2018-2019 for Clarinetist Allison Eales commissioned by the Gregynog . Scored for Clarinet in A and String Trio it reflects the collage of Autumn colors: Green, Yellow, Brown shades of first Autumn; Red, Orange of Autumn at its peak. It followed my English Sonatina for young clarinetists premiered by Alison Eales and Anna de Hair in London in January, 2019, and was premiered in London in October, 2019. This piece reflects the heightened emotions of fiery intensity reflected in the changing of the colors of the leaves in Autumn. Reflected as well is the serene beauty before the Autumn arrives, and the resignation of the eternal cycles of nature. The opening section (Andante) evokes the feeling of nostalgia and assurance of the inevitable cycle of nature. We know the life will go from the tress only to return again next season. We feel the joy of the intense colors of the foliage, and the sadness of the loss of life in winter. This section segues into Green (Adagio cantabile) with pastoral music and quotes of The Water is Wide and I pass all the hours in a shady grove of Pelham Humphrey. This leads into Red (Allegro con fuoco/Presto), followed by Orange (Declamando) as well as absence of color when the leaves all fall. I pass all the hours is a song by Pelham Humphrey with words by Charles II: I pass all the hours in a shady grove …When I see the print of her shape in the green…I think there’s no hell like loving too well, The melody is incorporated because it is the same melodic motif of the Scherzando movement of my English Sonatina for young clarinetists which Alison Eales and Anna de Hair premiered. I discovered it after composing that piece in researching English folk songs to refer to in this piece. It is an ideal segue into the Allegro con fuco/Presto music. The final section (Andante cantabile) is my personal melodic sequence from the rising motif of Over the hills and far away.

Duarte’s English Suites, seven in total, are written for different instrumental combinations and use different folk songs as their bases. English Suite No.3 Op.78 for four guitars was written in 1979 and comprises three movements, 1) Rufty Tufty, 2) The Crystal Spring and 3) The Black Nag, which use two dances from John Playford’s The English Dancing Master and one folk song from Somerset, UK. The music is of medium difficulty but written for maximum enjoyment.Les suites anglaises de John W. The eleven folk songs in this collection are all from the British Isles or American tradition. They were selected and arranged for my personal voice students, many of whom are beginning singers. This edition is for singers with medium-high voices. Upper ranges approach the top of the treble clef but do not go above the staff. The common thread for all the songs is to provide interesting arrangements for singers of a variety of skill levels with accompaniments that usually are very supportive of young or less experienced voices. All are available separately or in choral settings in a variety of voicings. The songs in this edition are: Down in the Valley (American), All the Pretty Little Horses (American), All Through the Night (Welsh), Annie Laurie (Scottish), The Ash Grove (Welsh), The Colorado Trail (American), Barb’ra Allen (English), The Crystal Spring (English), Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes (English), Greensleeves (English), and Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier (Irish/American). Volume 2 contains an additional eleven folk songs. Each volume is also available for medium-low voices.

One of the things I did to pay my way through college was to entertain at coffee houses, playing the guitar and singing folk songs. Many of the songs in the collection are old favorites that were in my repertoire. While I sang a lot of songs from the English-speaking countries, I especially loved finding tunes from other countries. Many those songs have found their way into this book. Then, when I finally put the book together with 45 songs, there was a space left over just big enough to add one more song. So, I did! The songs are arranged as solos, duets, and rounds. As well as notes for the psaltery, lyrics and guitar chords are included for many of the tunes.

English.Sea Songs, commissioned jointly by Ars Nova Copenhagen and Glasgow Concert Halls, is a kind of sequel to Martland's Street Songs (originally written for the Kings Singers and Evelyn Glennie). As with the earlier piece, Martland made use of to the library of the English Folk Song and Dance Society at Cecil Sharp House in north London. I wanted specifically to find texts that were not just the usual nautical heave-ho sort of thing, but instead explored the dangers and hardships still being experienced by sailors as recently as the early 19th century. I was also very happy to see in these texts the sense of camaraderie and mutual support that existed between the sailors. (Steve Martland) Dance to your Daddy sets the scene of a sailor's wife at home, dandling her baby son and singing to him about his daddy away fishing, and about the future. Both the tune and the words come from the Northumberland area around Newcastle. This song is very well known in the UK and gave the title to a famous television series When the boat comes in. Fire Down Below is about the effects of fire - a constant danger on board wooden ships. At the end of this song the words take on an extended meaning: Fire in our hearts for the friends that we love. The Dead Horse is about the initial month of work without pay in which all seamen had to take part. They referred to it as the dead horse - hence the expression to flog a dead horse when something is a waste of time. The seamen resented this unpaid time, and the text expresses their frustrations metaphorically by listing what they would do to the horse! The music's frantic gallop alludes to the horse's desperation. Although The Sea Martyrs presents itself as a ballad, this text has a more literary feel, and unlike the other songs it doesn't include a chorus refrain. It concerns the sailors' lack of pay, the consequences of asking for pay (being hanged!), and the poverty of their families at home. The poem portrays the sailors' deaths as an almost religious sacrifice to help future seamen. At the end of the work, the opening of Dance to your Daddy returns as a kind of descant, sung by an angel calling to the hanged men. © Paul Hillier, 2012.
