Piano,Voice - Digital Download SKU: A0.1069977 Composed by Steven H. Boothe. Arrang…

Piano,Voice - Digital Download SKU: A0.1069977 Composed by Steven H. Boothe. Arranged by Ashley Ivers. Pop. Full Performance. Duration 184. Boothe Publishing #4633725. Published by Boothe Publishing (A0.1069977). Most of the mistakes I made in life were between the ages of 12-16 years. Somehow I felt that I was smarter than I was. I thought that my friends were smarter than they were. I felt invincible. I made many foolish mistakes during those years. About that time, my family was preparing to move from Oregon to Utah. I remember my mother talking with me and saying that I could start over again. We would be in a new place with new people. No one would know me. I could be the person I truly wanted to be. I thought about this a lot, and when we finally made the move I had decided what kind of person I really wanted to be. In fact, I felt bad for being the wrong kind of person and hurting other people physically and spiritually. I eventually felt so bad about my mistakes that I decided that I would write or call the people I had hurt and apologize to them. Over the period of a year I was able to find, call and apologize to each of them. To my great surprise none of them were still angry with me. I was forgiven. That was a great feeling. This day will be forever what you choose. Once you leave this life you won't be able to return and right any wrongs that you have committed. So when you make a mistake, choose to make it right today so that this day, this day of good choosing will be what will last forever. Never let yourself do something that you know inside is wrong. If your friends are trying to talk you into doing something you know is wrong, don't just sit there and listen to them. Get up and leave the room, or the party, or the situation. Be true. Be the one. Be the son or daughter of God. Do what He would do.

Small Ensemble Alto Saxophone,B-Flat Clarinet,B-Flat Trumpet,Flute,Horn,Trombone - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1047346 By Blaze Scheuerman. By Blaze Scheuerman. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Jazz,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 43 pages. Blaze Scheuerman #651904. Published by Blaze Scheuerman (A0.1047346). Through The Years is meant to be a reflection back onto one’s childhood. Inspired by my own upbringing, it is a recollection of past events that came and mindsets experienced. It opens up with a loud and active sound to show the start of the journey. The character begins happy and energetic, going head first with no fear. The dotted quarter note theme at measure 11 then shows the young child’s state of mind. While beginning to understand concepts of anxiety and fear, he is still full of vigor and confidence. Then at measure 26, the main character begins his adolescence. Still fresh and happy, he sees the world in a simple way and that it is actively watching out for him. He is enjoying this passive time of leisure until measure 40, where he decides to actively try to seek out something. He gets carried away however, and tries to return back to his roots, seen in measure 59. Unfortunately he finds himself tainted and unable to return to his go-getting former self. He then does something peculiar in measure 77. Instead of being angered or saddened by this fact, he accepts it and takes a step back to rebuild himself, seen in the fugato section. After a long and detailed remapping, he finds himself back at his desired happy self. However at measure 127, he feels himself changing once again. So through active awareness and will, he prevents himself from changing into something he doesn’t want to be and instead stays as his desired self.

Mysterious Moment for oboe and string trio

Small Ensemble Cello,Oboe,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.576733 Composed by David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 7 pages. David Warin Solomons #90581. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576733). Mysterious piece in octatonic mode, originally written for the short story The Door The pdf file contains score and parts. The sound sample is an electronic preview. High up on the grassy hill behind the town there is a door. It stands there in its frame with nothing before or behind it. It is locked shut. There is no key. We climb the hill each day. We play each side of the door, games of hide and seek. But we cannot go through the door. Each day we go there during this long sultry summer holiday. We are fascinated by the structure. Why would anyone put a door up there, in its frame, eternally locked, with nothing before or behind it? Maybe it is all that remains of an ancient house? We play, we wonder, we laugh and play, and we return regularly to our homes in time for tea. Then, one day, as we climb the hill for the umpteenth time, a lady dressed in white arrives before us. We watch her take the key out of her bag and insert it in the lock. We are too far downhill to catch up before she closes the door behind her. As we arrive, puffing and panting, Steve knocks on the door. No answer. Dave knocks on the door more forcefully. We hear a distant swish of robes. Gloria knocks, perhaps a little more timidly as the swishing sound approaches. Estelle begins to knock in her turn and the door suddenly opens wide. We all gasp as we see the lady standing there in glistening robes. Her face is hidden from view by a white shawl, but her piercing eyes still show. Children, she says, welcome all. Do come in, please, the kettle is on. You are just in time for tea. We hesitate, as well we might. How can we come in when there is nothing before or behind the door? But Estelle puts one foot inside and looks back at us with a curious expression of serenity on her face. We follow her. We look around at the new space beyond the door and at the parquet floor beneath our dew-soaked feet. As our eyes become accustomed to the brightness of the interior we catch sight of many signs of the world we have entered, but only fleetingly. They pass before our eyes in an instant and then flee beyond the range of sight. There is a staircase, a hat stand, a distant gleam of an ancient cooker, a faint whiff of scones and boiling jam. As we walk inside, our senses are overwhelmed with the new reality, we are rooted to the spot. Do please sit down, says the lady with a slight catch in her throat. We are seated on wooden chairs along one side of an oak table, although we cannot recall how we got there, some slip of the memory perhaps. We have no sense of foreboding, Estelle's serenity has passed to all of us. We can stay here eating scones and jam until the end of time. The lady removes her shawl and reveals a face as beautiful as anyone's mother's. Her deep black eyes glisten like obsidian. She beams a smile of welcome and pours the tea. I'm glad you have come. I've been expecting you, she begins. You must have a thousand questions, so do please ask away. Well, says Steve, what is this door that we passed through? Is this another world? There is no other world, the lady replies, this is the only one. But there is! There is! starts Dave excitedly, Look!. He gets up quickly from the chair, knocking it over in his haste and rushes to the door to open it. He pulls at it with all his force and reveals a black nothingness behind it. We were on the hill, where's it gone? he shouts, what have you done to it? There is no hill. But you climbed the hill in front of us says Gloria. There is no hill. Even Estelle of the serene demeanour is beginning to look worried. How did we get here then, how did you get here, she asks the lady nervously. We have all been here since the beginning of time, the catch in the lady's throat is becoming more evident. No, we have our families down there in the town cries Estelle You have no families,.

The Monk's Turned Topsy-Turvy

Clarinet - Digital Download SKU: A0.1071177 Composed by Lori Archer Sutherland. Contemporary,Folk,Standards. Full Performance. Duration 224. Lori Archer Sutherland #4804263. Published by Lori Archer Sutherland (A0.1071177). The Monk’s Turned Topsy-Turvy is an original fantasy for clarinet choir, based on the old French-Canadian children’s song, Ah! Si mon moine voulait danser! (Danse, mon moine, danse). The title is a play on words: moine means both monk and spinning top in French. The lyrics speak of persuading mon moine to dance by offering various articles of clothing, such as a hood or cap. After a brief, yet bold, introduction, the piece jumps into a straightforward rendition of the tune. From there, the melody is repeated, bringing in other voices and added flourishes. While the tune starts to repeat a third time, it doesn’t get to finish its full statement. It’s interrupted by a run up through the ensemble into a rollicking 7/8 section. With a rhythmic accompaniment underneath, the jaunty melody begins in the third clarinets. The upper instruments take over briefly in 6/8, then the tune returns to 7/8. After a quick breather, the accompaniment introduces an upward sweep motif. This alternates with the accompaniment pattern heard at the beginning of the 7/8 section. The lower voices then take control, driving downward into a different tonality and mood. An undulating accompaniment sets a dreamlike feel, with different voices quoting fragments of the theme. The accompaniment transfers between voices throughout the section, eventually changing back into a 3/4, then a 2/4 feel, resulting in a transition back to the original feel of the piece. The low voices get the melody, with rhythmic accompaniment and racing runs throughout the other sections. The melody goes a bit topsy-turvy before the group comes together in the descending quarter note motif from the beginning of the piece, bringing us to the coda. There’s one final quote of the opening of the main theme from the low voices, leading to a whirlwind in the first and Eb with accented notes and suspensions underneath. The Eb pipes up with one last comment and the group closes out the piece.

Choral Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.730418 Composed by James Nathaniel Holland. Children,Christmas,Contemporary,Holiday. Score. 150 pages. James Nathaniel Holland #3376293. Published by James Nathaniel Holland (A0.730418). The Piano Vocal Score (with SA Chorus) New Contemporary Classical Music from American Costa Rican composer James Nathaniel Holland in his masterful ballet adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale, The Snow Queen. Ballet yet to be premiered. Be the first to produce it! Highlights are The Dance of the Evil Snow Sprite and the Distorted Mirror, Innocence and Kai and Gerde's Special Friendship, The Waltz of the Roses ('Think of my love as a Rose'), The Waltz of the Snowflakes (Snowbees), Gerde Morns Kai's Death, The Suite of the Lady of Spring (Tale of the Tiger Lillies, The Dream of the Morning Glories, The Tale of the Snowdrops, the Hyacinth's Tale), The Waltz of the Summer Palace, Dance of the Thieves and Kai's Joyous Dance Finale. Ballet Synopsis: Evil Snow Sprites make a mirror that reflects all that is mean and evil. When it shatters, its splinters drift to the far corners of the world. Gerde and Kai are two poor children who live in Copenhagen in the early 19th Century. They live innocently with their parents and Grandmother and tend a rooftop rose garden. One winter night Kai meets the Snow Queen and a splinter from the mirror enters his eye. The Snow Queen returns and abducts Kai. Although accepted as dead, Gerde deeply feels otherwise and begins her quest to find her friend, traveling through the four seasons, sometimes beautiful and sometimes frightening. The Lady of Spring takes her as an addition to her fantastical garden filled with tales and dreams of the flowers who dwell there. But when Gerde sees the rose on Spring's bonnet she wakes from her enchantment. Her tears spring back the roses who tell her Kai is not dead. She flees from the garden. Gerde grows up in the wilderness and a crow says that he has seen Kai at the Palace of the Queen of Summer. They hurry there to find a magnificent ball in progress. Gerde is introduced to the Kai lookalike but knows something is not right. The Queen of Summer helps Gerde on her way and lends her a coach and gives her a magic red rose that will never fade.As coach searches for Kai, it enters the season of Autumn and is accosted by robber girl and a band of theives. They dance in an rousing, energetic dance taunting her. When the morning comes Gerde tells her fellow captive animals of her quest to find Kai and that all hope is lost. The pigeons finally tell Gerde that Kai was abducted by the Snow Queen many years ago. The robber girl overhears them and has a change of heart letting her go with her reindeer to the far North of the Snow Queen.Gerde finds Kai in the palace of the Snow Queen piecing together the evil mirror. She gives Kai up for dead but leaves the rose of summer beside him. Kai spots the rose and he sheds a tear. The splinter falls out and he completes the mirror. They head back for home to their families were there is a big finale of a beautiful wedding on a late summer day and live happily ever after.YouTube Complete Ballet presentation: https://youtu.be/-zDAJ-Ttw70Composer website: http://lacoronadelossantos.net/jamesnathanielholland.htmlTwo part performance CDs sold separately. Piano Trio No. 1 Poets and Prophets (piano score – piano, vln, cel) MO160APiano Score (parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor51 pages - 29:00 minutes in lengthI. Man In BlackII. The Tennessee TwoIII. My JuneIV. Hello, I’m Johnny CashPiano Trio No. 1 (Poets and Prophets) was composed by Mark O’Connor during the Fall of 2003. The piece was commissioned for the Eroica Trio by a noted patron for music, Kathryn Gould of Palo Alto, California. The world premiere took place at the Montalvo Chamber Music Series in California, March 5th, 2004. In a letter to the members of the trio dated 9/20/03, Mr. O’Connor lays out his plan for the new music. My initial ideas have sort of exploded in to the entire concept of the music with a real impact actually. Now I am piecing together the parts of it and then will eventually work on detail as I get the overall form under wrap. Here is what my inspiration for the music is; Johnny Cash.Johnny was a boyhood hero of mine, I used to sing his songs when I was 8, 9 and 10 years old, and played the guitar like him (sometimes up the fretboard strumming away). My mom used to help me transcribe all the lyrics off the albums, she also thought he hung the moon. As you can imagine, the passing of Cash for me this last week has been emotional. I am at my very best when I compose with my emotions at my sleeve, and guess what, it is time to do the Eroica piece. And I believe I will be able to craft a very unique tribute in to the form of a Piano Trio. There is something that is very fitting in all of this though. Cash was one of the few country music and rockabilly musicians to appeal to all ages, all types of people all the way into the MTV generation which is something that is hard to fathom. That one person can move musical mountains with his charisma and his voice. He sung about the prisons, riding the trains, about killing, and living, about lost love, about the gospel, about the downtrodden and the Native American, and about being stoned. His musical sound was the thing that got everybody though. He developed along with his guitar player Luther Perkins, a new and vibrant way to bring the music out.I also knew Johnny and worked with him, visited him privately at his home. Johnny also appeared on my album called Heroes, where he brought back the great story of the Devil coming down to Georgia to challenge young Johnny for the golden fiddle. My job now is to bridge what I am feeling about my inspiration for Cash, and bring it in to the instruments that I love writing for.I might not have imagined that this Johnny Cash concept would have worked out of hand, if it hadn’t been for your musicianship, insight fullness and graceful approaches in to the details of musical concepts and style. If the piece is good, then I will have no doubt that you will bring it to the forefront so others can grasp the intentions of the work, and in addition for others to enjoy playing it after you have brought it all out in to the open, and gave it a life. Small Ensemble,Strings Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.873039 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. Score and parts. 22 pages. Sally Whitwell #3875723. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873039). I first met the Acacia Quartet a couple of years back, playing in a show I put together for Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, T he Beatles Unplugged. What a joy to discover a quartet of such expert musicians who are also so open to playing such a wide variety of music, from The Beatles to Brahms! I wrote this piece Winter Love for us to perform together.Composing a piece for specific performs is, I imagine, something like tailoring a bespoke suit. I wanted to give them something with which they could show off their unique versatility; creating rich, warm, blended sounds one minute and fiery, energetic, even whimsical tones the next. I didn’t want to write just a quartet at the time because, perhaps selfishly, I simply wanted to be a part of it!The title makes it seem like the work is programmatic, but it’s not. I just couldn’t think of a title for it. My partner Glennda came up with that, and I dedicate the piece to her.-- Sally Whitwell

Guitar - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1314698 Composed by Richard Hirsch. Instructional. Educational Exercises. 8 pages. Richard Hirsch #903442. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1314698). Many amateur guitarists and beginning students of guitar are ‘stuck in the first position’. The rest of the fretboard is ‘terra incognita’. They don’t know where the notes are and they don’t know how to get to them and use them in playing melodies. To help remedy this situation, I offer a collection of scales and exercises I have developed over the years that have helped me master the fretboard of the guitar and that I have used to warm up my left and right hands before practicing or playing proper pieces. Guitarists afraid to move up the fretboard miss out on all the tonal nuances that the guitar has to offer. They also often have undeveloped left hand technique with a little finger that flies around helplessly and uselessly. These scales and exercises will, if played regularly, put the little finger to good use and guide the left hand to orient to the fretboard properly, staying close to the fretboard with fingers that move as little and as efficiently as possible. They are also relaxing and fun to play around with. I read somewhere a while back that medical science had found that pianists were less likely to develop brain diseases. The scientists attributed this to the many hours pianists spend playing scales, as this is like a gentle brain massage. So scales are not only good warm up exercises for the fingers but also good warm-ups for the brain. The scale exercises written here in the keys of G and C should be played in different keys in higher positions on the fretboard. Students can try to see just how far up the neck they can go to reach the highest notes. After a while, what seemed challenging and strange will start to feel comfortable and familiar. Don’t hesitate to develop new variants of the scales when you grow tired of playing them as I propose here. Have fun playing and playing with the scales! The exercises often start in one position and move toward other higher or lower positions on the fretboard. When moving from one position to another, follow the suggested fingerings to utilise what is called a lead finger to move the hand to the next position. This will make the movement smooth and not interrupt the flow of the scale. In the end all movement should look and feel seamless and effortless.I have chosen scales in major keys I think are particularly good to play on the guitar. To practice a scale in a minor key, start the exercise in the related major key from the fundamental of the minor key, for example, to play an E minor scale start the G major exercise on an E and play from there. This is one way of creating new variants of these scales. Another way to vary the exercises is to play the scales in different time signatures or rhythms.I believe these exercises are particularly helpful for amateur guitarists who play in ensembles of different kinds, duos, trios, quartets, where the guitarist often only has one melodic line to play. Such melodies often sound much better played in higher positions where the guitar can be made to sing, rather than in the first position where the same tones, especially on open strings, often sound rather dull. From my own experience, I find that when I play a melody in a higher position using all the fingers of the left hand, the melody not only sounds better, the fingers remember the melody better.Â

The King, by Dennis McCorkle, is a contemporary pop-rock musical of the first two kings of Israel, Saul ben Kish and David ben Jesse and explores the contrasting lives and outcome of each man’s choices in life. [2 Samuel 11:12-13 - And David said to Uriah: ‘Tarry here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee depart.’ So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. 13 And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk; and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.] In fear of being exposed, DAVID has her husband brought back from the field with the hope that he will have relations with his wife covering up his own indiscretion. URIAH, a conscientious soldier, returns home, but sleeps outside on his steps out of respect for the men still fighting on the front. Seeing that his ploy has not worked, he has URIAH and some of his men over to the palace for drinks [Pour Me Another One – Troops, Uriah and David]. Getting URIAH drunk, DAVID has him escorted home, but as before he sleeps outside. As a last desperate measure, he sends a letter for JOAB (David’s commander and confidant) back with URIAH to place URIAH on the front line and then have the rest of the troops pull back leaving him exposed. URIAH is killed. Also included with your order is our new 20 page catalog of over 150 titles at no additional charge.

Guitar - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1227412 By Ed Sheeran. By Ed Sheeran, Fred Gibson, Max Martin, and Shellback. Arranged by Barry McCormick. Pop,Singer/Songwriter. Chords/Lyrics. 2 pages. McCormick (A0.1227412). ||Get ready to play and sing along to Eyes Closed by Ed Sheeran with our Lead Sheet music!|| This minimalistic arrangement features the melody line, lyrics, and chord symbols, giving you all the essential elements you need to play the song with ease. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced musician, this Lead Sheet is perfect for anyone looking to play Eyes Closed in a simple and straightforward way. So grab your sheet music and get ready to make some beautiful music! ||Notes On the Sheet Music|| -Melody- The melody alters slightly on repeating for subsequent verses etc. These are notated using smaller bracketed note heads and should only be played/sung on the appropriate repeats. The decision was made to not notate the final chorus as sung however when performed/sung the final chorus could be ad-libbed to emulate the original should the performer desire.-Guitar Strumming- There is a suggested strumming pattern/rhythm contained within the intro. This will fit with the song but feel free to come up with your own! This is to be an aid for learners and a resource for teachers. -Structure- The sheet music follows the structure of the song as heard in the recording. If the repeats are not obvious each section (Verse/PreChorus/Chorus) is marked by boxed texts for ease of navigation. I have also provided a tab for the riff which persists throughout the piece in the intro section. -Length- One of my main aims in arranging popular titles is to make the effort to try and minimise the amount of pages required. As a Musician I hate having pages and pages of music that could have been condensed using repeats and other structure markings. This arrangement fully utilises these and this is part of the reason why the decision was made note to notate the final chorus as sung in the recording. As this is a lead sheet it hold all the info to play this song in two pages. -Alternatives- If you need more info in your music I have two other arrangements of this. Both are Voice, Piano, and Guitar Arrangements, the first with the melody above a simple piano accompaniment with the Guitar chords the second is a piano reduction of this arrangement with alterations so that it is playable on the piano. For these arrangements and others that I have done you can click on my publisher link above, B.McCormick. That will take you to all of my arrangements on site. ||About Ed Sheeran|| Ed Sheeran is an award-winning singer-songwriter known for his soulful and introspective lyrics. This is also known as my first symphony. I had written this in the ambition to get placed as a finalist in the Young Composers challenge for 2016. This song is based around the phrase Cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war a phrase going back to the time of William Shakespeare's play. Julius Caesar. In the scene, Mark Antony is alone with Julius Caesar's body, shortly after Caesar's assassination. In a soliloquy, he reveals his intention to incite the crowd at Caesar's funeral to rise up against the assassins. Foreseeing violence throughout Italy, Antony even imagines Caesar's spirit joining in the exhortations: ranging for revenge, with Ate by his side come hot from hell, shall in these confines with a Monarch's voice cry Havok! and let slip the dogs of war. The song is split into split into 3 parts, the intro, the march to war, and the VictoryThis song is 5 minutes and 5 seconds long, and is appropriate for schools and studentsIf you have any questions, please email me at Liampb1998@gmail.com or 2ndHanover@gmail.com

Score and parts. 21 pages. Liz Nedela #5801577. Published by Liz Nedela (A0.938013). Variations on the Pentatonic; One Piano Four Hands. Using several pentatonic scales, the three movements (two are short, one is long) of this piece have many moods, as the title implies! l. Melody on the Miyako-bushi is slow and dreamy (altho, some pianists like to play it fast and dreamy).2.The Chase on the Man Gong is fast, as the primo and secondo chase each other! 3. Variations on the Blues Minor is the longest movement and has a lot going on with tempo changes, running up and town the piano, displacing accents, a dreamy Adagio, Allegro contrasts; and rhythmic motives and jazz harmonies get tossed back and forth in Primo and Secondo. This was a commission for the WSMTA Composer of the Year 2014; and it has a counterpart: the piano solo written for the Intermediate composers of WSMTA, which is listed elsewhere in this catalog.Have fun with this piece! -- while you learn about pentatonic scales in a very different way!

Large Ensemble,Rhythm Section Flute - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.910422 By Charlie Parker. By Charlie Parker. Arranged by David Heywood. Jazz. Score and parts. 63 pages. David Heywood #5203399. Published by David Heywood (A0.910422). Donna Lee by legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker falls in to the category of a contrafact, or the recycling of an older tune using a new melody with the same chord changes. In this case, Parker used an old tune from 1917 called Indiana, or Back Home Again in Indiana, improvised a new melody over it, and the rest is history. This medium-up tempo swing arrangement features flute quartet (Four C Flutes) and rhythm section, and uses a paraphrase of the original tune in combination with Parker’s melody in the head and a canon with the same melody in the head out. All instruments get the opportunity to solo, and there is a flute soli section after blowing that pays homage to another contrafact done on the same tune by Horace Silver. Not an easy chart, but well worth the effort!

Full set of parts: Please contact Chris Gordon at the email address on the first page of music for details.IF NOT NOW, WHEN? If Not Now, When? gets its title from the novel by Primo Levi, the Italian author who both survived life in Auschwitz and fought the continued German military presence in Italy with the Resistance after the Italian surrender to the Allies in September 1943. Levi meant that revolution and the overthrow of tyranny should never be 'put off until tomorrow'. If you believe you are on the side of right, then 'seize the day'- tomorrow may be too late. The inspiration for INNW? grew from research I was doing into an early song by Alban Berg called An Leukon which Berg wrote in 1907 while a student of Arnold Schoenberg. In delving into the kind of world which Berg inhabited in the Vienna of 100 years ago, I was fascinated by the café culture* which played a pivotal role in the lives of most artists: not only composers, but also writers, painters, architects and journalists. They swirled around the fashionable 'watering holes' sucking up current thoughts and ideas, high on Viennese coffee, cigar smoke and idealism! I envisaged a play which tried to encapsulate all this and wrote a few scenes with characters such as Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Steuermann, Pisk, Kraus, Gropius and Altenberg heatedly discussing music, art and poetry over large cups of milky coffee. This grew into the framework for INNW? which, to paraphrase Pirandello's play about characters seeking an author, is a 'play without words in several scenes'. The piece is organised into 8 short movements or 'scenes' showing the 'Schoenberg cirle' sharing their radical and daring ideas and the shock or delight (or both simultaneously) with which those ideas are greeted. The first, which happens to be the longest, is rooted in conventional tonality. It begins with a fanfare in D flat major ('aux armes, citoyens!'), then seeks a 'freer' tonality by means of the 'emancipation of the semitone' only to capitulate in the central section and, finally, to 'fall back to earth' by winding down in G sharp minor. These 'scenes' are not meant to represent particular composers. They are, however, meant to represent the kinds of directions in which music could progress, given the 'breakdown' or 'stretching to its limits' of traditional harmony which had occurred in the previous 10 to 20 years. So many ways forward were promulgated, with one after another extraordinary, and often unexpected, futuristic musical panoramas glimpsed momentarily. My aim is to demonstrate which directions they decided they could head in having cleared the 'overgrown' path before them. * I even discovered that, around this time, in the Café Central, a certain Leon (Lev) Bronstein, otherwise known as Leon Trotsky, banished by the Okhrana (Imperial secrect police) from his native Russia, would spend all day in a back room playing chess. How delicious, I thought, if Schoenberg had ever brushed passed Trotsky or, indeed, had ever spoken to him: the one planning political and the other musical revolution!

The pieces in Volume 1 are based on Hungarian Folk Songs. This piece is scored for one carillon with two performers.I use the following story to explain how this piece is written:Imagine yourself traveling through the Hungarian countryside about 100 years ago. You are in an open carriage or on horseback. As you travel, you begin to hear broken strains of music from somewhere up ahead. As you get closer, more of the melody is heard. You reach the location of the music performance and pause to watch and listen to The Swineherd's Dance. After a few minutes you realize you must be on your way. As you continue your travels, the music fades out in the distance behind you..
