Klezmerim (the Klezmer musicians): I was asked to write a Klezmer-style piece by my clarinettist friend Mitch Sturman and his friend, cellist Marty Steinberg, to perform in Philadelphia at a neighborhood reunion. A new synagogue had been built in their old Philadelphia neighborhood of Mayland-Mohican/West Oak Lane -- Congregation Beth’El, 7531 Lowber Ave., Philadelphia, a synagogue founded by the late Rabbi Louise Elizabeth Dailey, the daughter of a Baptist minister. The congregation's spiritual leaders are her daughter, Rabbi Debra Bowen, and Rabbi Bowen's husband, Earl. A concert was given in this new synagogue for its current worshippers on November 4, 2018. An original Klezmer-like tune serves as a ritornello around the melodies of Go down, Moses (a nod to the original Baptists religion of the synagogue's founder); Avadim hayinu, ata b'nei chorin (We were slaves, but now we are free); Eliyahu havani (Elijah, the prophet); and Chad gadya (The goat my father bought for two zuzim). The ritornello of the piece (the Klezmer-like melody) was originally composed by Jacklich in 2015 for clarinet, viola, and cello, at the suggestion of Sturman for performance by Sturman (clarinet), Jacklich (viola), and Marissa Gohl (cello). This original kernel of a piece was performed once after a rehearsal of the Imperial Valley Symphony, but was put aside to await further musical development. The commission by Sturman and Steinberg (for a clarinet/cello duo on a Klezmer-like theme), and Steinberg's request for the addition of the Negro spiritual and three Passover Seder melodies, provided the motivation to complete the work in its current form.. The viola part is there for trio performance; however, the work may be performed by only clarinet and cello.

The whole point of The Little Books of Fiddle Music series is to make available interesting and fun pieces of music that the beginning and intermediate musician can enjoy. There are a lot of other collections available, but most of them are too demanding for the casual fiddler ... and there are many more people who play recreational music then you might suspect! The pieces in this book were selected because they are melodious and not overly complicated. In some cases, I simplified the notation even further to make the music accessible to a beginning fiddler. My goal is to allow more people to appreciate this music. The book is smaller than usual so it will fit into your fiddle case. You can use it on a music stand or leave it open on the floor as a quick reference when you are playing in a group. This version is arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Tenor Horn in E Flat. Jewish Wedding bands, prominent in early twentieth century New York, were well placed to take advantage of the phonograph recording revolution. Accordingly, we are fortunate to have a rich record of the musical style of the time. Silver Wedding first appeared in a 1915 recording by Abe Elenkrig’s Orchestra. Elenkrig was born in Ukraine, which may point to the origins of the tune. Silver Wedding is in a Bulgar style, a happy piece designed to escort the newly-weds from the ceremony to the feast. Silver Wedding is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a short introduction and coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Silver Wedding is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around three minutes, this version of Silver Wedding is perfect for weddings, celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. This arrangement is for professional band with set of parts.Ciocârlia (meaning the skylark) is a Romanian tune, allegedly composed by the Romani-Romanian pan flute player Angheluş Dinicu[1][2] in the virtuosic style of the urban lăutarească music from late 19th century. Angheluş Dinicu first presented the tune in 1889 at the inauguration of the Eiffel Tower. However, the most famous version would become that of his grandson Grigoraș Dinicu, that adapted the tune for violin. George Enescu also was inspired by Ciocârlia for his composition the Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 for orchestra. Ciocârlia has been covered numerous times, but because it is a piece of lăutărească music and not a piece of Romanian peasant music it cannot be considered representative for the Romanian peasant spirit.[3] In the case of the Ciocârlia, like with other famous tunes of lăutărească music, there were attempts to hide the name of the composer in order to make it seem anonymous/traditional.[4] It is known as Ševa (Шева) and čučuliga (Чучулига) in Serbian, Bulgarian and Macedonian. It has also become highly popular in the Jewish Klezmer repertoire.[5] In Georgia, the tune became widely adopted into traditional folk music repertoire and is known as Torola (ტოროლა, the lark)[6] During the communist-era, the Romanian intelligence service operated a numbers station believed to be used by spies in foreign countries. The station known as V01 became well known for its use of Ciocârlia as its opening interval, which would be followed by a series of number-coded messages in Romanian and concluded with the words Terminat. The station fell off the air soon after the 1989 coup and overthrow of Ceausescu.[7] The song was featured as part of the soundtrack for the 2009 Ubisoft game Rabbids Go Home, performed by Moldovan gypsy brass band Fanfare Vagabontu.

The movements are: 1 - Marie for shame, a sprightly number encouraging Marie to get out of bed and enjoy the day. It is inspired by the poem Marie vous estes paresseuse by Ronsard. 2 - Nocturne represents Marie going back to sleep! Possibly my most indulgent piece. 3 - Camp David is klezmer in style and somewhat camp, it is based on a Yiddish folk song - ikh bin a meidel in de joren. 4 - Blue Boar Blue is based on a poem by a friend who lived in Blue Boar quad (Christ Church Oxford) and laments the fact he has to stay in and study while he is actually looking forward to taking his girlfriend out punting on the river In each case, the ideal positioning of the instruments is: cello 1, violin 1, viola, violin 2, cello 2 The pdf file contains the score and parts.
