A selection of 44 Dance Consort pieces from publications dating from 1500 to 1620 in three, four or five part scores and fully chorded with lyricsRenaissance Dance music provides some of the most simple yet satisfying pieces to play in ensemble on a wide range of instruments.  They are suitable for recorders, modern strings, woodwinds or brass, or where available, reproductions of 16th century instruments, such as crumhorns, viols or shawms to name but a few.The 44 pieces that first  appeared in the publication Chording to the Dance Masters, are  presented in full score and with separate parts for each of the lines.  What is more, a number of the pieces have been re-edited to include their lyrics, should you wish to perform them vocally.  They represent some of the best known secular pieces of the Renaissance repertoire.What makes this Wold Meridian edition of these pieces different  from others is that they have been created to make performing them as accessible as possible.  Chords have been provided so that the piece can be played with just the melody line and a simple accompaniment.  It also means that keyboard players or fretted strings can join in with ensembles, giving extra sparkle to performances.Each piece can be heard in a video on YouTube with illustrations and historical background information.  Even more helpful for players who are less experienced in reading harmony lines, there is a YouTube video link featuring each part, where it is heard initially on its own with the chords, on repeats with the melody line added and finally together with all the parts in the whole ensemble.  If you have not had the pleasure of playing in consort with other people, you could not do better than start with these Wold Meridian editions.

Handbells play the melody while the Boomwhackers® keep a steady beat with three-note chords. Included in this set of scores is a combined score with both instrument parts on a grand staff plus a separate score for each instrument. A note and chord reference chart is also provided. To aid in the learning and teaching of this song or for use with other instruments, chord names are included on the Boomwhackers® staff and score. Lyrics are provided on the grand staff for sing along enjoyment. In addition, a complete set of scores for 4 ringers and 4 whackers is provided. Donna Lee by legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker falls in to the category of a contrafact, or the recycling of an older tune using a new melody with the same chord changes. In this case, Parker used an old tune from 1917 called Indiana, or Back Home Again in Indiana, improvised a new melody over it, and the rest is history. This medium-up tempo swing arrangement features flute quartet (Four C Flutes) and rhythm section, and uses a paraphrase of the original tune in combination with Parker’s melody in the head and a canon with the same melody in the head out. All instruments get the opportunity to solo, and there is a flute soli section after blowing that pays homage to another contrafact done on the same tune by Horace Silver. Not an easy chart, but well worth the effort!

When Brazilian singer Morris Albert recorded Feelings in 1974 it became an international hit song and rose to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. But there was a problem--Albert had claimed authorship of both the words and music, not acknowledging that he was using a tune written by the French songwriter Loulou Gasté. In 1981 Gasté sued Albert for copyright infringement, claiming that Feelings plagiarized the melody of his 1957 song Pour Toi. Gasté won the lawsuit, gaining seven-eighths of all royalties, and they now share the credits for the song. Whatever the legal issues, this lush, romantic arrangement for string orchestra will spark feelings of love in any audience. The file includes the full score and all five parts.
