The first contains dotted rhythms, staccato articulation, and meter change. The second thematic idea is related to the first in that it also uses dotted rhythms and meter change, but is more legato and begins with more sustained notes. The third thematic section is thinner in texture, more playful, and has a legato theme over a staccato background. The motivic material in each of these sections has similarities. Contrast is primarily obtained through change of style and mood. These thematic ideas develop throughout the movement by varying key, instrumentation, and melodic material. There are several sections of imitation that are very energetic.The second movement, Ballad, is lyrical at an Andante tempo. The form of the movement is through-composed as the motives develop into new variations instead of having clearly distinguished themes. There is however a recapitulation that brings the listen back to the opening material. The main motives that develop are a sixteenth note pattern that is arpeggiated and also stepwise, a dotted quarter and eighth note idea that is often on weak beats as well as appearing on strong beats, and scalewise eighth note lines.All of these interweave among the parts with frequent counterpoint and some imitation. The harmony is lush with seventh chords used frequently.The last movement, Tarantella, is in a lively tempo. The form of this movement is a large ABA(Scherzo, Trio, Scherzo). The A sections are in triple meter while the B section is in duple. The A section is in three parts, forming an ABA within the large A. The material for the first part is motivically derived. The first motive is a dotted eighth, sixteenth, eighth note followed by even eighth notes. The second motive is four chromatic sixteenth notes followed by an eighth note. This motive appears both ascending and descending. The B section within this large A consists of a slurred melodic line that has both stepwise motion and leaps. It is accompanied by staccato chromatic eighth notes. The large B section is folksong-like and is in a recognizable binary form that repeats in a new key. The large A serves as a recapitulation of the opening section and it ends lightly and playfully in keeping with the Divertimento title that means to divert or amuse.

It Is Not Death to Die is a new setting of French poet Henri Abraham César Malan's Non, ce n'est pas mourir as translated by George Washington Bethune and adapted for this work. Why this text? It first came to my notice shortly after the passing of Billy Graham, who was known to paraphrase D. L. Moody, Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.Graham's bold proclamation and Malan's poetry motivated me to focus anew on the resurrection, re-remembering it as the pivotal element of the Christian faith. For if there is no resurrection, Paul says in 1 Cor 15, our faith is useless. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead! Unfortunately, singing about heaven has, perhaps, been neglected of recent decades. We seem to have focused more on the already to the detriment of the not yet. But it is important to remember that this life is not all there is! Quoting Paul again, the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Rom 8:18). Yet, if Christ delays, the grim inevitability of our transition into eternity is a certain experience we all face. Malan's poetry so poignantly and eloquently captures this tension that it compelled me to compose a fresh musical setting that attempts to captures the mixture of dread and hope borne out in the acclamation that death is swallowed up in victory! I pray that this setting aids the Church to remember the great hope and promise Christ has granted us: O Death, where is your victory? O Death, where is your sting?_______________________________________________________________________________________________The music opens with a C# diminished chord in a very still and somber texture reflective of grief. The text is introduced with the first of two main motives, a rising 4-note outline of B minor in a triple repetition of It Is Not Death. As each stanza proceeds the music concludes on the second motive, a 5-note descending span of a minor 7th in Bb Lydian. The energy and mood of the music gradually shift over the five stanzas, as the focus moves from this life to the next; the texture thickens, the harmony expands, and the dynamic grows into the music’s pinnacle on reign with You on high! Because of the tropical climate of Taiwan, the condensation from the ceiling of the tunnel frequently dripped onto the roofs of the trains as they passed through. This folk song is about the drip-drop (“diu diuâ€) sound that the passengers used to hear as they rode the old locomotives on their journeys to the seaside. The tunnel is now part of the network of Taiwanese cycle paths.

In a film portrait of dancer, painter and sculptor Antje Tesche-Mentzen, I learned that in former times she was a proficient pianist. When she told me that she intended to begin playing again, I promised to compose her a cycle for her new beginning: 34 miniatures, some of them with a direct connection to her paintings and sculptures. The main part of Kosmos was composed in 2014, 400 years after Albrecht Dürer created his copperplate engraving ‘Melencolia I’, in which a magic square appears. In a magicsquare, numbers are arranged in a grid so that their sum in each column, row, and the two diagonals is the same number. In the square I have chosen, the magic number is 34. Dieses Stück habe ich 1949 komponiert mit dem Bestreben, den Begriff Sinfonik von der Vorstellung klassischer und romantischer Formen zu trennen. Der Hörer darf also hier nicht jene Elemente suchen wollen, die der Sinfonie des 19. Jahrhunderts eigen waren. Die Titel über den drei Teilen des Stücks haben keinen beschreibenden Charakter, sondern sind nur als Hinweise auf ihre musikalische Atmosphäre zu betrachten. Der 1. Teil beginnt mit einer Einleitung in ruhigem Zeitmaß, welcher eine lebhafte Passacaglia folgt, deren zweistimmige Bassfigur, zunächst vom Klavier vorgetragen, von Variation zu Variation durch verschiedene Instrumentengruppen in höhere Lagen gezogen wird, bei gleichzeitigem und regelmäßigem Sich-Steigern des Tempos, bis sie zum Schluss durch die hohen Violinen hindurch in das Anfangszeitmaß einmündet. Der 2. Teil beginnt in der Schluss-Stimmung des ersten und wechselt dann in eine vorwiegend von Blechbläsern getragene Periode von erregten Signalen und Rufen, welchen ein ruhiges, auf gleichmäßiger Achtelbewegung liegendes Andantino folgt, in dem Holzbläser, Harfe und Vibraphon konzertieren. Dieses Andantino wird in zwei Hälften geteilt durch einen Hymnus der Streicher und Bläser. Die zweite Hälfte des Andantino gleitet in einen stillen und aphoristischen Epilog über. Der 3. Teil ist eine lebhaft bewegte Folge kleiner Gruppen und Kurzmotive, deren formale Herkunft sich jeweils aus den rhythmischen und spannungsmäßigen Gegebenheiten des Vorhergegangenen erklärt. Enjott Schneider in dialogue with Mozart: Even the instrumentation of the nine-minute Mozart-Mantras alludes to Mozart, a co-inventor of the genre of clarinet quintet. With regard to motif, they are based on melodies of the famous aria Non ho colpa from the opera Idomeneo. Motivic fragments taken from it are subject to various repetitions, thus becoming a kind of mantra. This technique, related to minimal music, of processing small motivic particles does not remain meditative at all but still leaves room for the clarinet to sing. In the middle movement, Adagio, the clarinet plays an original quote from Mozart's moving aria for mezzo-soprano. Enjott Schneider studied music and German studies and is professor of music theory and film composition in Munich. His extensive activities as a composer, performer, music writer and lecturer make him a versatile figure of the musical world.

This folk song is about the drip-drop (“diu diuâ€) sound that the passengers used to hear as they rode the old locomotives on their journeys to the seaside. The tunnel is now part of the network of Taiwanese cycle paths.

A popular Christmas favorite from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky is probably the most popular of the great composers in America. His music certainly appeals to musicians. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most noteworthy melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Richard Wagner influenced his symphonic writing. Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include the 1812 Overture, The Nutcracker Suite, and Swan Lake. Also famous are the Violin Concerto in D and the six symphonies. The greatest of the six symphonies may be No. 6, the Pathétique. Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet that was performed for the first time in December 1892 in St. Petersburg. To begin with, the original ballet failed to attract a positive reception. However, the ballet suite became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. The ballet suite became even more famous in the 1960s. It is now performed all over the world, particularly during the Christmas season.

Published by Alice B. Dearden (A0.1075914). This piece was written in memory of my sister Sarah, who passed away in July of 2010. It consists of seven very brief movements. Each movement is one word of a sentence addressed to Sarah. To determine the rhythm, each word was translated into Morse code (which she had learned as a teenager), using (for the most part) eighth notes for dots and quarters for dashes. For example, the letter S in Morse code is “. . .â€, so S in the music is represented by a pattern of three eighth notes, as in the first bar, whereas A is “. - “, represented by the eighth and quarter of the second bar. The melodic motive for each movement was based on a year that was important in her life; for instance, the first movement is based on 1945, the year of her birth. I chose C as 1, C# as 2, etc. – which means that the majority of the movements begin with C - G#/A-flat (1-9). In the case of 2010, I chose to ignore the zeroes, meaning the theme consists of only two notes, D-flat and C.
