This is one of the most beloved works in all of Mozart's catalog making it a strong choice for a recital, meditation, nightclub, church or wedding reception. Eine kleine Nachtmusik Eine kleine Nachtmusik is also at the same time known as Serenade No. 13. Indeed, we find it listed in the Köchel Catalog as K. 525. With this in mind, Mozart composed the piece by all means in 1787 probably as a commission. To clarify, the title translates as a little night-music. Mozart originally scored the work in particular for an ensemble of two violins, viola, and cello with double bass (optional). In modern times the work is certainly usually performed by string orchestras, though it is often in fact performed by a string quartet – with or without double bass. Publication A point often overlooked is that the name of the work derives from the entry Mozart made in his private journal. He wrote: Eine kleine Nacht-Musik. This explains that Mozart was probably not naming the piece, but only entering a record that he had completed it. Nevertheless, the work was published by and large in 1827. It had been sold to the publisher for the most part in 1799 by Mozart's widow Constanze. Nowadays, it is on balance extensively performed and recorded. Some critics ultimately claim that it is the most popular of all Mozart's works. Early Years Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791), was a productive and significant Austrian classical composer. Mozart displayed unusual musical capability from his earliest childhood. It seems like he was already capable on keyboard and violin at the age of two. He started composing at age five and performed before European royalty. Middle Period At 17, Mozart was working as a musician at the Salzburg Royal court but grew agitated from boredom and traveled to search for a more interesting job. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was summarily dismissed from his Salzburg job. Nevertheless, he decided to stay in the capital (Vienna), where he achieved much fame but little economic haven. Throughout his concluding years in the Capital, he composed many of his most famous works: symphonies, operas, and concertos. Final Period The conditions surrounding his death have been much the subject of much conjecture and mythology. He composed more than 600 works, many recognized as highpoints of symphonic, chamber, concertante, choral and operatic. He is among the most everlastingly popular of classical composers, and his impact is substantial on succeeding Western art music. The third movement treats the two themes as children at play with games such as tag and hide-and-seek as variations. Both themes become partner songs leading to fugue, which is, after all, the ultimate musical game.Performance Notes:I Moderato, slurs in the flute suggest phrasing but are optional in terms of breathing. The B section at letter C has a canon between flute and piano (left-hand) which suggests imitation in articulations and dynamics. The climax just before letter D can be stretched slightly more than poco rit. implies. II Slowly gently, must not be played slower than indicated. The middle section at letter B begins with a subito forte. At 3 measures before letter C the fermatas allow a certain freedom. When the flute releases the piano can continue the left-hand chord. The piano should use una corda in the bridge at letter C. Elsewhere, the piano may also employ una corda in quiet places ad libitum. At final note the flute can fade to nothing if breath runs out and just remain in pose as the final note of the piano is allowed to vanish.III Majestic with vigour, two given themes from ca. 1934 are Old Abram Brown by Benjamin Britten and Kookabura Sits on the Old Gum Tree by Marion Sinclair and both are rounds for children. The flute boldly declares theme one at the outset. The piano arpeggiations begin sonorously and quiet before letter A. In Variation 1 the piano must begin softer than the low register flute. The piano left-hand upper notes [A, then G, then D-A fifth) may require use of the sostenuto pedal. Variation 2 is a caccia or chase. Variation 3 is a barcarolle where theme 1 is hiding in the flute part. Variation 4 introduces the second theme (flute) in partnership with theme 1 (piano). Four measures before letter I the piano makes an ogre of theme 2 and should be humorously ponderous. The fugue subject might be the teacher who brings everyone into the final partner song of themes. The piece finishes as it began except for a wistful ending.James Albert Yeager (b.1946)James began his career as organist and choral conductor then harpsichordist and finally, professor of sacred music. As an organ major at The Ohio State University, he studied with Dr. Wilbur Held (B.Mus. 1969). Professor Joseph Goodman mentored him in composition at Union Theological Seminary in New York city (M. Sac. Mus, 1971). At the University of Colorado-Boulder, he returned to the organ, nevertheless, keeping composition as a mainstay (D.M.A. 1985). While in Colorado he composed two film scores for student filmmakers as well as choral and organ compositions. He was appointed Director of Sacred Music at the Pontifical College Josephinum (Columbus, Ohio) and rose to the rank of Professor (1984-2009). He retired as professor emeritus in 2009 and moved to New Mexico. While residing in Mountainair, New Mexico, he was organist/choral director for 12 years at a major Albuquerque church retiring again in 2021. He led choirs of all ages from children through the elderly. His most recent compositions include Passacaglia & Fugue for Organ and Chamber Orchestra (2022), a Fugue for Piano and Orchestra (2022), a Sonatina for Flute and Piano(2023), and the Sonata for Piano Quintet (2024) as well as several smaller works for voice and piano.

The three movements of this piano quintet share a common element contained in the seed of a motivic idea—the interplay between the minor and the major 3rd : a tonal ambiguity or conflict of the minor 2nd. Stylistically, this Sonata pays modest homage to neo-classicism of 20th Century composers such as Poulenc (I), Prokofiev, Shostakovich (III), and perhaps even a touch of Gershwin (II). I hope this piano quintet will offer players and their audience chamber music that is a bit unusual yet worthwhile. The Sonata embraces the lightheartedness, the melancholy , and the whimsy of nostalgia. There is no separate piano part.Performance Notes:I Moderately fast, expresses dialogues of themes that move between piano and strings. The playfulness of the exposition (repeat is not optional) can give way to a more passionate building of the development to the climax at letter H. In the recapitulation the longer bridge remains steadily in tempo (no accelerando) relaxing just before letter N and theme two. The coda after letter O is a somber premonition of movement two.II Slowly, the bowings are ad libitum. The viola is chantlike and smooth. Violins glissando like the portamento of the Chinese stringed instruments, the Guqin or the Ehru type glissando leading to a very pure quiet long tones without any vibrato and the resulting fourth should be a pure tuning. The piano can use una corda ad libitum in softer passages, and the pedal (damper) ad libitum. In the B section (Letter D) pianist should treat the 64th notes like an ornament (upper mordent). Strings play the eighths after Letter G accents with strong bow changes. At the end, the piano lingers until the sound vanishes after the strings die away.III Introduction: Quick and spirited, the transition (Introduction) is measured and strict without alteration leading to letter A. The rondo theme, ‘A’ section, can slightly intensify in each successive repetition, but not slavishly. The small waltz or ‘B’ section, Letter C, the quartet might play to resemble a reed organ or harmonium—sweet, sonorous, and harmonious. The ‘C’ section, Letter G, big swell on short bridge passage, then pizz. strings become very rustic and like a peasant dance. Pianist can use una corda ad libitum in soft passages. Violins again after Letter I play similarly to non-vibrato of 2nd movement. Here is a 'must-have' standard for your Christmas season, The Little Drummer Boy; presented here in a simple arrangement in C for piano and solo drum. It begins with the drum only, slowly adds LH piano then both hands for Verse 1; then both piano and drum adds some more texture for Verse 2, then it slowly unwinds and ends with only the drum. This arrangement was written for a specific duo; a beginning first year middle school drummer and a slightly arthritis pianist. Thus the drumming is very basic and steady patterns with long stretches before a slight pattern change (there are 5 different patterns). And thus the piano part has a LH of mostly broken arpeggios so it can be played by rolling the wrist instead of using finger strength, and the RH is all simple detached chords so the arm can go up and down, and it rarely expands beyond a 6th, again, taking the pressure and movement off of the fingers. Nevertheless, this is still a piece full of character and great for a featured solo this season!

However, it's a characteristic that is not conducive to cultivating popularity. Nevertheless, Willan's music is simply lovely, and it's nice to know that, if you 'cotton on' to it, you will probably never exhaust his supply, at least to play.

Mendelssohn Background Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician, and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. Consequently, Mendelssohn composed in the usual forms of the time - symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music. To summarize, his most famous works include his music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides Overture, his later Concerto for Violin & Orchestra, and his Octet for Strings. His most well-known piano pieces, by and large, are the Songs Without Words. Artistic Standing  Musical tastes change from time to time. Moreover, just such a change occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This plus rampant antisemitism brought a corresponding amount of undue criticism. Fortunately, however, his artistic inventiveness has indeed been critically re-evaluated. As a result, Mendelssohn is once again among the most prevalent composers of the Romantic era. Early Family Life Mendelssohn was, in fact, born into a prominent Jewish family. His grandfather was, notably, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix was, in fact, raised without religion. At the age of seven, he was suddenly baptized as a Reformed Christian. He was, moreover, a child musical prodigy. Nevertheless, his parents did not attempt to exploit his talent. Early Adulthood Mendelssohn was, in general, successful in Germany. He conducted, in particular, a revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, specifically with his presentation of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. Felix was truly in demand throughout Europe as a composer, conductor, and soloist. For example, he visited Britain ten times. There, he premiered, namely, many of his significant works. His taste in music was. To be sure, inventive and well-crafted yet markedly conservative. This conservatism separated him by all means from more audacious musical colleagues like Liszt, Wagner, and Berlioz. Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatoire which, to clarify, became a defender of this conservative viewpoint. Mature Adulthood Schumann notably wrote that Mendelssohn was the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most brilliant musician, the one who most clearly sees through the contradictions of the age and for the first time reconciles them. This observation points to a couple of features in particular that illustrate Mendelssohn's works and his artistic procedure. Musical Features In the first place, his musical style was fixed in his systematic mastery of the style of preceding masters. This being said, he certainly recognized and even developed early romanticism from the music of Beethoven and Weber. Secondly, it indicates that Mendelssohn sought to strengthen his inherited musical legacy rather than to exchange it with new forms and styles or replace it with exotic orchestration. Consequently, he diverged his contemporaries in the romantic period, such as Wagner, Berlioz, and Liszt. Mendelssohn revered Liszt's virtuosity at the keyboard but found his music rather insubstantial.

I came up with the lyrics at around 3am in the morning of 3rd December 2014 sitting at a desk in room 703 of the De Syloia Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam. Often I find that my periods of working abroad give me the space to think of things in new ways. This song is a good example of that.One look at the first page of the score of 'On That Cross' is all you need to realize that this is not a case of a choir singing with a piano accompaniment. I put the piano part above the choir in order to dispel that misconception. So if it's not that, what is it? I wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to approach a subject from two completely different points of view, without either point of view being compromised by the other, and yet the result can nevertheless be a beautiful synergy. That is what the pianist and the choir are doing here. Each is meditating upon the cross of Christ, but from two totally unrelated points of view and yet somehow combining in a way that is almost hypnotically beautifully. There is little obvious relationship between the choir's and the piano's music; and yet each is reconciled to the other ... and there's a very good reason why I wanted the music to speak of such reconciliation.In late 2014 people in Iraq were being beheaded, crucified and generally killed in the most brutal and sadistic manner possible. Their only ‘crime’ was to dare to call themselves Christians. You can say what you like but in my book nobody has the right to tell anybody else what they should believe, much less murder them on religious grounds. The thing that incensed me almost to the point of incandescence was that the perpetrators of this unspeakable evil dared to justify their actions by claiming that they were acting on behalf of their god. So in such frame of mind I started to write the lyrics to 'On That Cross'.The first words that came into my mind were “Oh men who dare to call on gods to justify your hatred – of this be sure …†and I wanted to follow that with threats of eternal damnation, torture in hellfire and so on. Except that the words that flowed out of my fingers onto my computer screen were not like that at all. “Of this be sure – I love you still, my cross your salvation from all the sin of man.â€It doesn’t get much more powerful than that. I may be incapable of loving the people of ISIS, ISIL, DAESH or whatever one calls them, but my God isn’t. In the poem, Ellen Douglas is the Lady of the Lake. The lake is probably Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands. First of all, Ellen goes with her father to stay in the Goblin's cave. They go because he earlier refused to join in a rebellion against King James. Roderick Dhu, the chief of the rebellious Alpine Clan, marches up the mountain with his army. He wrote more than 600 secular vocal works, seven symphonies, and, correspondingly, a massive amount of piano and chamber music. Critics agree, as a matter of fact, that his most famous works include his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (also known as the Trout Quintet), the Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759 (Unfinished Symphony), the last sonatas for piano (D. 958–960), and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin (D. 795) and Winterreise (D. 911). Education Schubert was furthermore a musical child prodigy. He studied violin with his father as well as piano with his older brother. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna for the rest of his life. In his late 20s, it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently, he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies, therefore, belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony, he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano.

The composer writes: 'On That Cross' is a powerful reflection on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. I came up with the lyrics at around 3am in the morning of 3rd December 2014 sitting at a desk in room 703 of the De Syloia Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam. Often I find that my periods of working abroad give me the space to think of things in new ways. This song is a good example of that.One look at the first page of the score of 'On That Cross' is all you need to realize that this is not a case of a choir singing with a piano accompaniment. I put the piano part above the choir in order to dispel that misconception. So if it's not that, what is it? I wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to approach a subject from two completely different points of view, without either point of view being compromised by the other, and yet the result can nevertheless be a beautiful synergy. That is what the pianist and the choir are doing here. Each is meditating upon the cross of Christ, but from two totally unrelated points of view and yet somehow combining in a way that is almost hypnotically beautifully. There is little obvious relationship between the choir's and the piano's music; and yet each is reconciled to the other ... and there's a very good reason why I wanted the music to speak of such reconciliation.In late 2014 people in Iraq were being beheaded, crucified and generally killed in the most brutal and sadistic manner possible. Their only ‘crime’ was to dare to call themselves Christians. You can say what you like but in my book nobody has the right to tell anybody else what they should believe, much less murder them on religious grounds. The thing that incensed me almost to the point of incandescence was that the perpetrators of this unspeakable evil dared to justify their actions by claiming that they were acting on behalf of their god. So in such frame of mind I started to write the lyrics to 'On That Cross'.The first words that came into my mind were “Oh men who dare to call on gods to justify your hatred – of this be sure …†and I wanted to follow that with threats of eternal damnation, torture in hellfire and so on. Except that the words that flowed out of my fingers onto my computer screen were not like that at all. “Of this be sure – I love you still, my cross your salvation from all the sin of man.â€It doesn’t get much more powerful than that. I may be incapable of loving the people of ISIS, ISIL, DAESH or whatever one calls them, but my God isn’t. He created them, he sent his Son to die for them … and he is even now ready to save them, as he is you and me. That’s grace.A small group of us sang this at a Good Friday united service in 2016. We sang it unannounced, at the end of the service, when one would have expected people to start getting up from their seats and leaving the church. Nobody did. Could work well for a variety of occasions: wedding receptions, church services (Easter), and anniversaries. It seems like a pleasant dance, unlike some previous dance music. Schubert improvised these dances at parties for his friends.  Although conceived on-the-fly, these dances are the work of a genius. Composers have similarly elevated dance music to artistic status. As a result, they freed it from the original purpose of dancing. Certainly, the older masters used the dance forms as vehicles for complex treatments. Here, however, Schubert retains the dance-like quality while finally expressing his innermost thoughts and emotions. The dance is certainly filled with a doleful expression, yet the texture remains even more light and refined. Therefore, to perform these with sensitivity we probably need to use a light but accurate touch. The accompaniment pattern needs to be crisp and delicate – probably even in the more forceful parts. The piano pedal should also be used very carefully so as a result not to blur the outline. Instead, it should contribute to the dynamic quality of the piece. Schubert Franz Schubert (1797–1828) was, in fact, a famous Austrian composer. Moreover, he composed during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Schubert was comparatively prolific. He wrote more than 600 secular vocal works, seven symphonies, and, correspondingly, a massive amount of piano and chamber music. Critics agree, as a matter of fact, that his most famous works include his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (also known as the Trout Quintet), the Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759 (Unfinished Symphony), the last sonatas for piano (D. 958–960), and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin (D. 795) and Winterreise (D. 911). Education Schubert was furthermore a musical child prodigy. He studied violin with his father as well as piano with his older brother. In addition, when Schubert was eleven he studied at Stadtkonvikt school, where he became familiar with the orchestral music of Haydn, Mozart, and likewise Beethoven. In due time he left school and returned home where he studied to become an educator; nevertheless, he continued studying composition with Antonio Salieri. Performance Eventually, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performer. This appointment straightaway established his name in Vienna as a composer and pianist. Finally, he gave his only composition recital in 1828. He died suddenly a few months later probably due to typhoid fever. Legacy Schubert’s music was by and large underappreciated while he was alive. There were all in all only a few enthusiasts in Vienna. After he died, however, interest in his work in fact increased. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, and other famous composers in due time discovered his compositions. Schubert seems to have composed this piece as a song-setting. This is because he wanted to portray a poignant emotional event from a poem. The poem was Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake. Consequently, this song became an integral part of Schubert's Song cycle. Therefore the cycle is called: the Lady of the Lake. In the poem, Ellen Douglas is the Lady of the Lake. The lake is probably Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands. First of all, Ellen goes with her father to stay in the Goblin's cave. They go because he earlier refused to join in a rebellion against King James. Roderick Dhu, the chief of the rebellious Alpine Clan, marches up the mountain with his army. But before the battle, he, first of all, hears Ellen singing. She is singing a prayer calling for help from the Virgin Mary. Schubert's piece was first performed at the castle of Countess Sophie Weissenwolff in Steyregg, Austria.  Schubert dedicated the arrangement to her, and as a result, she became famous as the lady of the lake.The incipit of Ellen's song is Ave Maria which is Latin for Hail Mary. It seems like this similarity led Schubert to adapt the melody to accommodate the Roman Catholic prayer Ave Maria. Consequently, the Latin version of Ave Maria finally became more famous than the original so that consequently many believe he wrote the Latin version first. Joe Procopio AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BEETHOVEN DUETS By Joe Procopio Because of the complexities, range and sonorities inherent in all of the Beethoven Symphonies, it may seem impossible to transcribe any one movement as a duet that is true to the composer. Nevertheless, I believe these duets contain the heart, soul and essence of Beethoven’s melodies, rhythms and expressions; even though these works are tiny when they are compared to the Master’s great musical creations which have no equal. In fact, there is no comparison. However, my sincere hope is that since I have rendered some of Beethoven’s music as duets, his music is now more readily available to all permitting a greater number of musicians and all the people who hear their performances to come to know and love a bit of the world’s most valuable, breathtaking and beautiful music. In truth, Beethoven’s music has stood the test of time. He astonished people in his day whenever he performed his music or had his music played. He still does today. To be sure, his music has enhanced and enriched the lives of many of us for over 200 years. In performing and listening to these Scherzi you will find the whole of each work a marvel of Beethoven’s skill with sections reaching the sublime. Few composers have been able to write down on paper music of such incredible beauty that it reflects the awesome splendor of God’s creation. What comes to mind immediately is Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony No. 6. It has been said, that much of his music mirrors not only the magnificence of God’s creation but also the radiance of God the Creator himself.
