Equali were works written for equal, or similar, instruments; in the eighteenth century they were almost always used for funeral services and usually employed a quartet of trombones. The most famous of these were the three Beethoven wrote for the Linz Cathedral in Austria on All Soul’s Day 1812. Two of these were adapted later for male voices and were sung at Beethoven’s funeral. These pieces are some of the most famous works for trombones, no doubt due to the fact that they were composed by Beethoven. They were commissioned by Franz Xaver Glöggl, Kappelmeister of the city of Linz, while Beethoven was visiting his brother. According to later accounts by Glöggl’s son, although his father had a complete collection of trombones (soprano, alto, tenor, bass or quart) the three Equali were performed by a traditional quartet of alto, tenor and bass trombones. This edition offers a compromise: the original score and parts are given exactly as written in the complete works, and a version designed for the less experienced players: the three movements are transposed down one step, edited with minor musical suggestions, and all four parts are written in bass clef. Dr. Mathie has done the Trombone world a great service in bringing this great work in its two forms to publication.

Set in two movements, the music of Oneness in This World represents two things necessary for humanity to move together: Unity and Joy.In the first movement, the music evolves from tension and musical discord to unity and harmony. While much of the drama is heard through the interaction of the clarinet and cello, the piano provides a key factor throughout the second part of the first movement through foundational chaconne variations. As the harmonic progression repeats, the clarinet and cello become more aligned in their music yet maintaining a sense of individuality. Without unity and informed agreement, a society cannot truly benefit its people. Unity is strongest within diversity, contributing to growth, and moving towards a common goal to benefit all.In the second movement, all three musicians share equally in the production of the state of joy. The varied tone colors of the instruments, shifting meters, and dancing music all provide energy and emotions suggesting joy. Joy is a certainty of the goodness of life, in spite of sorrows or pain or even tragedy. Joy gives us wings to transcend our situation, opens us to our potential, and helps us become who we are to be. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. EMAIL ME FOR PARTS: mudiwamusic@gmail.comI joke that I am a hypocritical musician. As an audience member, I hate listening to really dissonant, contemporary music. Names like Schonberg, Stravinsky, Bartok, and so on don’t sit well with me. However, when writing music, I seem to lean pretty heavily on contemporary ideas like ostinatos, crunchy chords, and new harmonies. This piece started as an assignment to write 16 measures of music using pandiatonicism. Music that is pandiatonic is music with a feeling of more than one key. Every note is treated somewhat equal, so nothing sticks out as “tonic.†Try humming the tonic when listening to this piece. You can’t, because more than one exists. Since this is music with no tonic, it almost has “no name,†unlike how classical music may be labeled “Concerto in Eb Major.†I greatly appreciate the work of Austin Andrade, Aidan Lewis, Eithan Moreno, and Heather test, as the performers and director for this piece.

This arrangement of the Allegro movement from Henry Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. This selection is one of the arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library, many of which are being made available for the first time. They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (10 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. This particular arrangement is for a Trombone Sextet, consisting of 6 Trombones, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this piece. You may find something else that may suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check back periodically because new arrangements are added as often as possible. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Purcell's Allegro from his Sonata for Trumpet will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not. He was simply one of millions in the vast American workingclass, one who was known to jot down a poem or two now and then.Here we have six examples of his work, poems which he wrote for his childhood sweetheart whom he waited fifty years to marry. Maxwell’s great grandson asked me to set these poems to music saying, the poems illuminate a picture of life in the American midwest during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His poetry serves as a lens through which we can view his . . . youthful romantic view of nineteenth-century prairie life.Since the poems are so imbued with nostalgia and 19th century romanticism, I endeavored to set them with an equally strong sense of the classic art song tradition.Curiously, these songs feel longer than they actually are. There are many pieces about which one could say the same thing with less charity, but in this case it’s a good thing: the poems are quite short (the longest is only twelve lines, the shortest only four!)The entire cycle lasts just under 12 minutes. The audio sample includes most of one song (A June Night) and all of a second (Have You Found a Place?). These are enough to give you a sense of the whole cycle.
