Italian.Like many Englishmen I had sung madrigals for pleasure – usually late at night with friends, after several glasses of wine. While these madrigals have their charm, and many are extremely beautiful, I found, as I began an extended exploration of the madrigal as a creative venture, that the richest source lies in the Italian Renaissance. In 1998 I embarked on a project to write a series of madrigals, eventually deciding to collect them in ‘books’ in the manner of Italian madrigalists, such as Monteverdi or Gesualdo. The Second Book is for an unusual six-part group – the Scandinavian Trio Mediaeval (3 sopranos) and three tenors (John Potter plus two from the Hilliard Ensemble) – and sets Petrarch in the original 14th century Italian. I focused on those sonnets known as the Rima Sparsi (scattered verses) and added one extra Petrarch setting – originally a radiophonic piece (Marconi's Madrigal) for CBC's Marconi Day. Gavin Bryars.

As a young man he studied in Venice and became close friends with Giovanni Gabrieli, both eventually studying composition with Giovanni's Uncle Andrea. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts.This section of the 7th book is really a miniature scena (although Monteverdi describes it as a ballet), telling the story of Tirsi and Clori (Thyrsis and Chloris) two lovers from ancient greek myths. This piece is the final section of Tirsi e Clori, which Monteverdi describes as the Ballo (Dance) where all the characters in the story provide a spectacle of celebration at the end of the performance. There is a short (12 measure) section forming an introduction at a slow tempo, followed by a 1-in-a-bar dance, a change occurs at measure 113 to simple duple time before returning to a rousing reprise of the lively 3/2 music. The whole is brought to a rousing conclusion with a long cadence in what is rapidly approaching the Baroque style.The instruments are divided between two 'choirs' a 5-part one, representing the singers (Cantus,Quintus, Alto, Tenor and Bass) and a four part accompanying group representing the continuo. There is also an optional percussion part, as the original would have been so accompanied, even though it was not notated in the score.At just over 8 minutes in length, this is a great finisher for a concert - or, in the right circumstances, a starter - especially as Monteverdi has made the ending very loud and full.The seventh book has been a challenge. The much more intricate music, showing Monteverdi's development towards a true operatic technique requires a really careful study of his orchestrations. It has been a great pleasure to set this music and I hope lots of ensembles will 'give it a go'!

German.This six-minute madrigal setting was commissioned by the renowned Hanover Girls' Choir and composed on the basis of one of Rainer Maria Rilke's profound poems. It begins as a thanksgiving prayer: for the summer, for the autumn fruits. But the first winds bring along the fear of the cold and loneliness of winter: 'Whoever is alone now will remain so for a long time, will stay up, read, write long letters…'. Peter Eötvös lets the poem unfold twice, each time in a different way, thus intensifying the reflection. The tonality is treated freely, and the choral setting extends the underlying five-part texture, in which the choir's soloists create striking echoes, up to eight-part passages.

It was arranged by the composer from incidental music he provided for a theatrical entertainment commissioned for Albert I, Prince of Monaco in 1919. The original score contained eight numbers, including two songs for tenor, and a choral passage. Die Gedichte von Christian Morgenstern sind wie sein gesamtes facettenreiches Schaffen kaum zu verorten: zwischen Ironie, Witz, Sarkasmus, Dadaismus, Nonsense und gespiegelt von tiefer Spiritualität und Anthroposophie sind sie unerreicht. Gegensätze von Hoch Geistig und Trivial Banalem verunsichern. Dementsprechend ist auch die Musik, die 1985 für die Singphoniker komponiert wurde, kaum zu verorten. Banale Versatzstücke und lyrische Komplexität ergänzen sich. Gesangstechnisch: Virtuos und vom Feinsten.
