ISBN 9782898522048.Antônio Francisco Braga (1868-1945) belongs to the generation of Brazilian composers of the first republican period, aesthetically tied to romanticism, alongside Henrique Oswald (1852-1931), Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902), Glauco Velásquez (1884-1914), and Barrozo Neto (1881-1941). Born in Rio de Janeiro, on April 15th, 1868, he began his musical studies at the Asilo dos Meninos Desvalidos, in 1876. In 1883, he enrolled at the Imperial Conservatório de Música where he studied harmony and counterpoint with Carlos de Mesquita – a former student of César Franck, Durand, and Massenet – and clarinet with Antônio Luís de Moura. Braga's first compositions date from this period: Sonho de Dante (1885), Dolce far niente (1886), the first Valse Romantique for piano (1886), among others.In 1887, he premiered his first symphonic work, Fantasia-Abertura. In 1890, being one of the finalists in a competition to choose the new Brazilian national anthem, Braga was awarded a scholarship to study in Europe, where he took classes with Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatory. During this period, he wrote some of his most important symphonic works, Paysage, Cauchemar, Episódio Sinfônico, and Marabá (which was performed by Richard Strauss and the Vienna Philharmonic in 1920, in Brazil). His opera Jupyra is considered one of the greatest Brazilian compositions of that genre.Back in Brazil, he was appointed professor of counterpoint, fugue, and composition at the Instituto Nacional de Música, in 1902. There, some of the finest Brazilian composers studied with him, like Glauco Velásquez and Lorenzo Fernândez.Braga wrote operas, symphonic works, songs, sacred music, two Masses, music for piano, different chamber formations, band, and choir. He is the author of many patriotic hymns, the most popular of which is Hino à Bandeira (with lyrics by Olavo Bilac). He explored Brazilian nationalist elements in some of his works, as in Variações sobre um Tema Brasileiro and in the Trio for violin, cello and piano, whose third movement is based on a lundu (a musical genre and dance of Afro-Brazilian origin).In addition to being a composer, Braga was one of the most active conductors of his time, having been ahead of three orchestras in Rio de Janeiro: Instituto Nacional de Música, Sociedade de Concertos Sinfônicos, and Theatro Municipal. Braga conducted the Brazilian premiere of major symphonic works such as La Mer (Debussy), Pacific 231 (Honegger) besides other numerous Brazilian compositions.In 1938, he retired from Instituto Nacional de Música. He passed away on March 14th, 1945, in Rio de Janeiro.Unfortunately, Francisco Braga never wrote for the guitar. However, over a century ago his music had already been incorporated to its repertoire. According to information found in newspapers of the time, Spanish guitarist Josefina Robledo included transcriptions of pieces by Braga in her programs when she performed in Brazil: Gavota e Minuete (from the melodrama Contratador de Diamantes), in 1919, in São Paulo, and the waltz-caprice Corrupio, in 1921, in Rio de Janeiro.The piano score of Madrigal Pavane was dedicated to Alexina Leitão and published by Casa Vieira Machado, in 1901. According to the composer’s catalogue, there are two other versions of this piece: strings orchestra (1901) and quartet (which is still in manuscript). The piece Chronicles of Thamyris was written at the request of Greek guitarist Sotiris Athanasiou for his recording project with pieces based on Greek mythology.I chose the myth of Thamyris who was a musician of Thracian origin. In each movement I imagined an episode of this myth. The first movement is composed as a narrative. The second, as the title indicates, is the episode of the competition between Thamyris and the Muses. In the third, according to the myth, Thamyris will become blind and will break his lyre. The last movement is an imaginary dance from his native Thrace.La pièce «Chroniques de Thamyris» a été écrite à la demande du guitariste grec Sotiris Athanasiou pour son projet d’enregistrement avec des pièces basées sur la mythologie grecque.J’ai choisi le mythe de Thamyris qui était un musicien d’origine Thrace. Dans chaque mouvement j’ai imaginé un épisode de ce mythe. Le premier mouvement est composé comme un narratif. Le deuxième comme le titre l’indique, est l’épisode de la compétition entre Thamyris et les Muses. Dans le troisième, selon le mythe,Thamyris va devenir aveugle et va briser sa lyre. Le dernier mouvement est une danse imaginaire de son pays natal la Thrace.

Johannes Brahms – Variazioni su un tema di Haydn op.56Le Variazioni op.56 sono un momento fondamentale nell’evoluzione creativa di Johannes Brahms come compositore sinfonico, lo proiettano infatti verso la prima sinfonia; di questa, il primo movimento era già pronto da qualche anno ma si trovava relegato in un cassetto a causa del timore reverenziale nell’affrontare quel modello classico.Le Variazioni sul tema di Haydn, scritte nella duplice versione per due pianoforti e per orchestra, appaiono espressioni di un unico momento creativo dato il breve lasso di tempo intercorrente tra l’una e l’altra; la versione per due pianoforti, inserita in catalogo dallo stesso autore come Opus 56b, viene eseguita a settembre del 1873 con Clara Schumann, quella per orchestra il 2 novembre 1873, con Brahms alla direzione della Filarmonica di Vienna. La versione orchestrale è quella oggi più conosciuta e molto più spesso eseguita.L'arrangimento, si basa sul Corale di Sant’Antonio, composizione per ensemble di fiati, all’epoca attribuita erroneamente a Franz Joseph Haydn ed ancora oggi di origine incerta; i fiati e il pizzicato degli archi esaltano il suo carattere corale. Il tema è impostato su due periodi asimmetrici, entrambi con ripetizioni segnate da ritornelli: il primo periodo presenta due frasi di cinque battute ciascuna, il secondo è costituito da uno sviluppo in otto battute, una ripresa di quattro battute e un finale di sette. Il tema è chiuso da un accordo ripetuto.

Published by Alexander Klein (A0.1068453). Ipa is a poem written by Vito Apshana, a native Colombian and a member of the Wayuu people, an aborigine civilization from northern Colombia. The poem's central subject is the rock, not merely as an object (as we tend to perceive it in the industrialized world) but as a live witness of our ancestors in planet Earth. Ipa, just like all the poems and prayers that come from Amerindian cultures, is an ode to Nature and, thus, an ode to God. When I set this beautiful poem to music, I decided to convey the Amerindian world using the modal and pentatonic scales that are so prevalent in their music. However, since I am in no way truly connected to Amerindian culture, this piece is still a reflection of a western man's perspective of the aborigines. Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera would have called this work an experiment in Subjective Nationalism, that is, music that reflects foreign cultures using Western imagination and, thus, a primarily Western musical language. Ipa, then, is my personal homage to a rich, indigenous culture that still today breathes nature and magic in its own unique conception of the world. - Alexander Klein.

Mai 1817 sein Ballett „Parade“ uraufgeführt wurde, kam es zum Skandal. Die Produktion, an der auch Sergei Djagilew mit seinen „Ballets Russes“, Pablo Picasso (Bühnenbild und Kostüme), Jean Cocteau (Handlung) sowie Léonide Massine (Choreographie) beteiligt waren, entzweite die Pariser Musikwelt, machte den Komponisten aber weithin bekannt. ISBN 9790203755685.1955 erschien aus der Hand der franzosischen Nonne Carmen Bernos de Gaszold ein Gedichtband unter dem Titel Prieres dans l'Arche - Gebete aus der Arche. Diese Gebete werden den Tieren in den Mund gelegt, die mit Noah, in der drangvollen Enge der Arche vereint, das Ende der Sintflut erwarten. Die Dichterin folgt einer Tradition - man denkt an Asop, La Fontaine und Goethe - wenn sie im Wesen der Kreaturen Spiegelungen menschlicher Schwachen, Fehler und Tugenden erkennt. Denn die in der Wasserwuste gefangenen Tiere reden so fromm, furchtsam, selbstgerecht und banal, wie es menschlich ware. Und auch das Allzumenschliche - Hoffart, Leichtsinn, Neid - kommt zu Wort. Nur dass die Ichbefangenheit der betenden Tiere ihrer Unschuld keinen Abbruch tut. Ihre bedingte und bedrangte Natur findet Gedanken, die uns ein sympathisierendes Lacheln abgewinnt. Der Zyklus schien mir zur Vertonung geeignet, weil er ein religioses Thema unpratentios und originell vortragt und ein Stuck ermoglicht, das die ubliche Trennung zwischen weltlich und geistlich uberschreitet und Konzertsaal und Kirche in Anspruch nehmen kann. Zur Besetzung: Der Frauenchor muss aus den vier ublichen Stimmlagen 1. und 2. Sopran, 1. und 2. Alt bestehen, wobei auch noch Stimmteilungen vorkommen. In Nr. 9 Gebet der Taube wird noch ein (aus dem Chor zu bildendes) Soloquartett gebraucht. Der Instrumentalpart besteht aus einer Oboe und einem Streicherquintett (1. und 2. Violine, Viola, Violoncello und Kontrabass). Die Besetzung soll solistisch sein, kann aber bei den Streichern (und wenn die Klangbalance zum Chor dies wunschenswert macht) zu einem kleinen Kammerorchester erweitert werden. Der Charakter der Instrumente, ihre Techniken und Farben, erlauben mir realistische Klangmetaphern und physiognomische Parallelen - so, wenn das Cello im Duett mit dem Alt die hochmutige Giraffe in grossintervalligen Sprungen deutet, die rasende Geschaftigkeit der Ameise sich in schnellen Violinbariolagen ausdruckt oder die Oboe ein naturalistisches Rabengekrachz horen lasst. Der Zyklus beginnt mit dem Gebet des Noah. Man stelle sich das Gedrange und Geschrei vor, dass die Arche erfullt, die hochgehenden Wogen, den prasselnden Regen, und mitten darin den Urvater Noah, dem sich der Ausruf entringt: Herr, was fur ein Zirkus! Seine Ausbruche korrespondieren mit dem auf- und niederwogenden Streichersatz, bis der Sturm sich legt, die Wogen sich glatten und Noah in der mehrmals gedehnten Phrase Es dauert lange seine Ergebung und Hoffnung ausdruckt. Nach dem pharisaischen Gebet der Giraffe ergreift die Schildkrote das Wort. Ihr Instrument ist die Bratsche. Ihre schnaufende Kurzatmigkeit hindert sie, ihr Gebet zusammenhangend zu sprechen. Der fleissigen Ameise - sie erbost sich sehr uber die Grille, deren Wirtshausmusik sie unterbricht - folgt der Hahn mit hellen und scharfen Tonen. Er ist es, der die Sonne aufgehen lasst; man kann es in dem sich auffaltenden Klang der Coda horen. ISBN 9790203755678.1955 erschien aus der Hand der franzosischen Nonne Carmen Bernos de Gaszold ein Gedichtband unter dem Titel Prieres dans l'Arche - Gebete aus der Arche. Diese Gebete werden den Tieren in den Mund gelegt, die mit Noah, in der drangvollen Enge der Arche vereint, das Ende der Sintflut erwarten. Die Dichterin folgt einer Tradition - man denkt an Asop, La Fontaine und Goethe - wenn sie im Wesen der Kreaturen Spiegelungen menschlicher Schwachen, Fehler und Tugenden erkennt. Denn die in der Wasserwuste gefangenen Tiere reden so fromm, furchtsam, selbstgerecht und banal, wie es menschlich ware. Und auch das Allzumenschliche - Hoffart, Leichtsinn, Neid - kommt zu Wort. Nur dass die Ichbefangenheit der betenden Tiere ihrer Unschuld keinen Abbruch tut. Ihre bedingte und bedrangte Natur findet Gedanken, die uns ein sympathisierendes Lacheln abgewinnt. Der Zyklus schien mir zur Vertonung geeignet, weil er ein religioses Thema unpratentios und originell vortragt und ein Stuck ermoglicht, das die ubliche Trennung zwischen weltlich und geistlich uberschreitet und Konzertsaal und Kirche in Anspruch nehmen kann. Zur Besetzung: Der Frauenchor muss aus den vier ublichen Stimmlagen 1. und 2. Sopran, 1. und 2. Alt bestehen, wobei auch noch Stimmteilungen vorkommen. In Nr. 9 Gebet der Taube wird noch ein (aus dem Chor zu bildendes) Soloquartett gebraucht. Der Instrumentalpart besteht aus einer Oboe und einem Streicherquintett (1. und 2. Violine, Viola, Violoncello und Kontrabass). Die Besetzung soll solistisch sein, kann aber bei den Streichern (und wenn die Klangbalance zum Chor dies wunschenswert macht) zu einem kleinen Kammerorchester erweitert werden. Der Charakter der Instrumente, ihre Techniken und Farben, erlauben mir realistische Klangmetaphern und physiognomische Parallelen - so, wenn das Cello im Duett mit dem Alt die hochmutige Giraffe in grossintervalligen Sprungen deutet, die rasende Geschaftigkeit der Ameise sich in schnellen Violinbariolagen ausdruckt oder die Oboe ein naturalistisches Rabengekrachz horen lasst. Der Zyklus beginnt mit dem Gebet des Noah. Man stelle sich das Gedrange und Geschrei vor, dass die Arche erfullt, die hochgehenden Wogen, den prasselnden Regen, und mitten darin den Urvater Noah, dem sich der Ausruf entringt: Herr, was fur ein Zirkus! Seine Ausbruche korrespondieren mit dem auf- und niederwogenden Streichersatz, bis der Sturm sich legt, die Wogen sich glatten und Noah in der mehrmals gedehnten Phrase Es dauert lange seine Ergebung und Hoffnung ausdruckt. Nach dem pharisaischen Gebet der Giraffe ergreift die Schildkrote das Wort. Ihr Instrument ist die Bratsche. Ihre schnaufende Kurzatmigkeit hindert sie, ihr Gebet zusammenhangend zu sprechen. Der fleissigen Ameise - sie erbost sich sehr uber die Grille, deren Wirtshausmusik sie unterbricht - folgt der Hahn mit hellen und scharfen Tonen. Er ist es, der die Sonne aufgehen lasst; man kann es in dem sich auffaltenden Klang der Coda horen.
