They actually come together to form protons and neutrons. I have a passing fascination with these mysterious particles and how they all come together. It almost seems as though there exists some kind of microverse that physicists describe in smaller detail every few years.Dances with Quarks celebrates these tiny particles that are, in essence, everything. This piece is both whimsical and introspective. The work is divided into three sections predominantly; the main 'dance' theme, a middle section that is markedly smoother and more melodic, and the return of the dance theme in an augmented fashion. The meter is free and constantly evolving, reminiscent of the chaos of the microverse, but at the same time evocative of the seeming order from that randomness. There is also a persistent dialogue between the bassoon and strings that illustrates the myriad of colors in the universe as well as in music.

Again and again, Holliger enhances his virtuoso compositions by reviving historical traditions. In Preludio e Fuga, this return to history refers to the scordatura of the so-called 'Viennese temperament': It can be found in the most important repertoire pieces of the double-bass (such as in Mozart's Concert Aria KV 612) as third interval between the first to the third string and thinner strings which respond better. But to Holliger, virtuosity has never been an end in itself: More and more motivic particles emerge from the sweeping 'Prélude non mesuré' with almost unreally flickering sounds due to numerous harmonics and gradually fit together to form the elements of a four-part fugue. Produced in collaboration with Edicson Ruiz for whom Preludio e Fuga has been written, our edition presents the piece in two forms of notation to facilitate studying: in pitch and in finger notation.

Enjott Schneider in dialogue with Mozart: Even the instrumentation of the nine-minute Mozart-Mantras alludes to Mozart, a co-inventor of the genre of clarinet quintet. With regard to motif, they are based on melodies of the famous aria Non ho colpa from the opera Idomeneo. Motivic fragments taken from it are subject to various repetitions, thus becoming a kind of mantra. This technique, related to minimal music, of processing small motivic particles does not remain meditative at all but still leaves room for the clarinet to sing. In the middle movement, Adagio, the clarinet plays an original quote from Mozart's moving aria for mezzo-soprano. Enjott Schneider studied music and German studies and is professor of music theory and film composition in Munich. His extensive activities as a composer, performer, music writer and lecturer make him a versatile figure of the musical world.

In doing this exercise, I found over and over, with increasing intensity, that my sense of hearing enabled a far denser differentiation of images and information to penetrate my soul. It is my wish that audiences listen to my composition with their eyes closed, at least partially. Perhaps this would permit a few particles of light to appear in their mind’s eye. Bei dieser Übung machte ich immer wieder und zunehmend intensiver die Feststellung, dass über den auditiven Sinn eine viel dichtere Differenzierung an Bildern und Informationen in mein Innerstes gelangten. Ich wünsche mir, dass der Hörer meine Komposition mit geschlossenen Augen, zumindest teilweise, wahrnehmen würde. Möglicherweise könnten dabei auch ein paar Lichtpartikel in seinem inneren Auge entstehen. Harald Weiss.
