Small Ensemble Marimba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.935384 Arranged by Pharaoh Publications. Christian,Christmas. Score and parts. 21 pages. Pharaoh Publications #5363017. Published by Pharaoh Publications (A0.935384). Silent Night Prelude for five marimbas arr. by Dan Heslink This work is based on the well-loved Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber. This theme is so popular that it was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. And the version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935 is the fourth best-selling single recording of all-time. It’s sure to motivate your audience close to Christmas. The Prelude begins with a brisk tempo. Although notated in 3, as is customary in more modern renditions (the original theme was notated in 6), the tempo must be fast enough that two measures of 3 create a binary pairing (like 6/4 in two). It may be necessary to slightly slow down the roll speed to avoid a frenetic sound. The difficulty level is easy. There are no changes of key, and keyboard parts require only two mallets each. The expression of this beautiful tune will be greatly enhanced by exaggerating the contrasts of dynamics. Accompaniment and ornamental figures must at all times be sublimated to the familiar theme. At letter D, players should sing the well-known words in order to lead the audience or congregation in group singing. It would be helpful for the conductor to turn and face the audience at this point. This closing passage may be repeated for any number of sung verses. Use a smooth, relaxed stroke to elicit as much legato as possible. At points a continuous arpeggio accompaniment is divided among the instruments. Care must be taken to keep the sixteenth note speed consistent. Prelude on Silent Night would serve equally well in recital or in a church service. Duration is 2:20. A recording of this arrangement scored for percussion octet is available under the listing for Silent Night Prelude for Percussion Octet. Small Ensemble Marimba,Xylophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.935374 Composed by Dan Heslink. Contemporary,World. Score and parts. 41 pages. Pharaoh Publications #4855253. Published by Pharaoh Publications (A0.935374). Andean Refrains, composed by Dan Heslink The composing of Andean Refrains resulted from the composer’s travels in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, where he came to know and enjoy the melodies of the indigenous Andean band. Although the marimba is not an instrument of that region, it seems to be well-suited to the music’s technical and expressive demands. Requiring four marimbas and one xylophone, Andean Refrains is an original composition employing tradition Andean musical styles. Some of the five parts require four mallets, the others require two. It is best to perform the bass part on a marimba that can play two octaves below middle C, but if no instrument with that range is available octave transpositions of some notes is acceptable. In this work the marimbas imitate the wide vibrato of zampoñas, or panpipes, with rapidly alternating octaves. The notched-end wooden flute, quena, is suggested with hard mallets on the xylophone, and of course the guitars and charango (Andean ukulele) transcribe well to marimba with four mallets. The bass end of the marimba provides the register of the guitarrone. Chaccha, the rattle of llama toenails, is simulated by instructing one marimbaist to at times strike the bar with the handles of the mallet. With this work the composer hopes to capture the quiet dignity and inevitability of life’s events expressed by Andean musicians.

Psalm 111

Small Ensemble Vibraphone,Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.935378 Composed by Dan Heslink. Christian,Jazz,Jewish,Sacred. Score and parts. 5 pages. Pharaoh Publications #4887161. Published by Pharaoh Publications (A0.935378). Psalm 111 composed by Dan Heslink This work is an original composition for narrator and solo vibes. The narration, which should be delivered with a manner of intense reverence, is interpreted simultaneously by the vibe’s music. It is hoped that this work will assist vibists who wish to play sacred music. Psalm 111 would serve equally well in recital or in a church service. Any position in the service would be appropriate, especially as special music or as an offertory. Written for four mallets, the vibe part is accessible for a player with intermediate level experience. Pedaling on the vibes is for the most part by the dotted quarter note beat, and is not notated in most places. Pedal indications occur when this pattern is varied. Half-pedal should be applied wherever needed for clarification of the line. The composer recommends medium hard mallets and no use of the motor for vibrato. 111 is one of the hallelujah psalms that portrays reverence for God. The narration is appropriately delivered by either masculine of feminine voice; the translation is from the Life Application Bible, New International Version. It is possible for the vibist to also deliver the narration, but a separate narrator is preferable. The music is notated in one part, with narration text place above the vibe notation. Pairing of voice and instrument is general, not requiring coordination greater than one beat resolution. Considerable flexibility in tempo is acceptable, even appropriate. Duration is 5:30. The composer, Dan Heslink, can be contacted at dan@dheslink.com.

Small Ensemble Marimba - Digital Download SKU: A0.935377 Arranged by Dan Heslink. Christian,Christmas,Jazz,Latin. Score and parts. 21 pages. Pharaoh Publications #4967167. Published by Pharaoh Publications (A0.935377). Variations on Green Sleeves for marimba trio arr. by Dan Heslink This most ancient and loved British folksong can be found in hundreds of arrangements, but imagine it’s setting for percussion ensemble, or as a Caribbean salsa, or as an American jazz selection. All of these styles are explored with this extremely popular tune. This if one of two arrangements of Green Sleeves by Dan Heslink, both of which are available through Sheet Music Plus. The other arrangement, for percussion quintet, follows similar musical contours and is available separately. It’s demands are at the intermediate level. This work will serve any concert or recital very well. It also brings the melody’s seasonal associations, for it is the tune to which the words What Child Is This is set. Audiences and performers will enjoy its modal cast and high variety of expressive content, ranging from evocative pastoral folksong, to rhythmic Latin dance and to the swinging climax.

Sinfonietta for Percussion Trio

Large Ensemble Bass Drum,Drums,Marimba,Multi-Percussion,Snare Drum,Vibraphone,Xylophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.935386 Composed by Dan Heslink. Contemporary. Score and parts. 46 pages. Pharaoh Publications #6058011. Published by Pharaoh Publications (A0.935386). Sinfonietta composed by Dan Heslink Sinfonietta is a trio for vibraphone, marimba and percussion (xylophone, snare drum, and bass drum). Its expression is intended to be non-representational, presenting only an interesting technical construction in a suave formal organization. With the title the composer designates a single movement, with length and seriousness of expression approaching a symphonic movement. Its form approximates an expanded version of the classical sonata-allegro, dividing materials into three large sections. Beginning are the two main phrases of the principal theme, which establish patterns that are idiomatic throughout the movement. The first measure’s quartal harmonies divide into rhythms alternating the two hands, the right-hand posing a melody and the left-hand complementing it with harmony and rhythmic repetition. The phrase at measure 7 is a long-breathed melody for vibes accompanied by undulating chords in the marimba. A transition comprising highly qualitative rhythms (stated first by the marimba in m. 20.) has much identity. By measure 41, the transition has grown into a full secondary theme, one that is developed and repeated often throughout the movement. The exposition closes with a theme beginning in measure 51. It is announced by the vibes as another long-breathed melody unfolding over the active rhythm of the second theme. After a gradual dissipation, the development section starts at measure 92 with a new but related theme, heard first in the vibes. It offers a different key and an expressive melody slowly unfolding over rhythmically active harmonies. The remainder of this middle section explores nuances of the secondary and closing themes, and ultimately leads to the movement’s first climax. It eventually dissipates through a gradual reduction of density and tempo. The Reprise begins vigorously at m. 118 with statements of both the principal theme’s phrases. Then the second theme is transformed by the addition of bass drum strokes, which sets up a codetta. This section comprises a long crescendo on the new theme over a rhythmic tattoo derived from the second theme, and builds to a bold conclusion. Pedaling on the vibes is indicated with a solid bracket below the connected notes, and half pedaling with a dashed bracket. It is imperative that the percussion part be heard but not dominate. The performer is encouraged to experiment with a piccolo snare drum and 28 bass drum. Sinfonietta would serve equally well in a professional, college or advanced high school percussion recital. The composer assigns a difficulty level of medium difficult. Duration is 8:10. The composer, Dan Heslink, can be contacted at dan@dheslink.com.
