This collection presents its user with a series of increasingly difficult rhythms on a single pitch. The rhythmic material in this series is organized into 10 difficulty levels. Each difficulty level contains four exercises in each of the following time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8. This gives exercises in 2, 3, and 4 beats per bar in both simple and compound meters. The first two exercises of each time signature have no ties while the remaining two exercises in each time signature include ties. In Book 1 of this series you’ll find difficulty levels 1 to 5, while Book 2 completes the set with levels 6 to 10. The exercises in this collection are intentionally random and difficult to internalize. They don’t follow any predictable or standard groove pattern, but instead are random successions of eighth- and sixteenth-note groupings within the prescribed difficulty level. In keeping the rhythmic material as unpredictable as possible the door is left open for the materials to be used in conjunction with any number of exercises, while forcing the user to process every rhythm as its own event without relying on pattern recognition to help in identifying the rhythms. To curate the difficulty of rhythm in as objective a way as possible I looked at all of the possible eighth-note and sixteenth-note groupings within the basic unit of one beat. Each difficulty level builds on the exercises of the previous by adding groupings that are slightly more conceptually challenging. Difficulty Level 9 contains all possible groupings, while Level 10 focuses on the more challenging groupings by omitting easy ones. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Practice sight-reading. When doing so it is encouraged to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a long period of time. The goal in practising sight-reading is not to learn the material but to develop the skill of reading new material. Use a metronome! The most important thing you can do with this material is learn how to read these rhythms and play them in time. Advanced metronome work: Place the metronome click on weak beats. With the metronome clicking only on the beat you run the risk of relying on the metronome to give you the time. Placing the metronome click on non-strong beats forces you to take responsibility for the time. For example, instead of putting the metronome click on each quarter-note in 4/4, play the exercise with the metronome giving the second eighth note of each beat, or the last sixteenth note, or beats 2 and 4, or only the downbeat of each bar. Be creative with this one! The possibilities are limitless. Develop independence between hands by playing a repeating pattern in one hand while reading an exercise in the other. Expand on this by adding patterns in hands and feet while reading a rhythm with a remaining limb. This is a great exercise for drummers and percussionists but any instrumentalist could benefit from coordination practice. Use these rhythms to practice scales. Instead of playing scales in straight sixteenth-notes, try playing them in the rhythms given in these exercises. Write in sticking patterns, dynamics, accents, phrase marks, or other articulations for you or your students to practice. If you’re not happy with the ties I included, feel free to add some of your own. Combine the above exercises in any way that you think will be beneficial to your practice. As with any of the Dots and Beams books, the uses for this particular collection are limited only by the imagination of the musician using it. I encourage anybody using this book to find as many uses for these exerci.

Maestro Max Hobart called me in the spring of 2009 and told me to check out this young jazz phenom on the saxophone named Grace Kelly. I said OK, that’s cool. That summer we went to the Regatta Bar in Harvard Square to hear her play with her band, and I was duly impressed by her musicality, soulfulness and chops. Max asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for her and the Wellesley Symphony. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. One of the most cherished jazz records in my vast collection is the collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter entitled Focus. Eddie, who used to be an arranger for the Benny Goodman Band in the forties, went on to create the Sauter Finegan Band in the early fifties. The band was one of the first to include the piccolo, oboe, bassoon, harp, celesta, French horn, tuba, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, timpani, and other unusual symphonic instruments in the standard big band format of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section of piano, bass and drum set. On the album Focus Eddie Sauter composed seven tracks of music for string orchestra and rhythm section. Stan Getz did not have a written part - he just improvised over the written music. If you are not familiar with this recording, then you will do yourself a huge favor if you go find it and add it to your own CD collection. The music is phenomenal and Stan is on top of his game, soaring above the strings with endless melodic inventions, flights of imagination and whimsy! It is one of those desert island CDs one should not be without. When I emailed Grace about this project and mentioned Stan Getz’s Focus, she said, It’s one of my favorite albums. So, we got off on a positive note immediately. My work, Focus on Grace … Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra, is very much inspired both by the Stan Getz album and by the performances I heard of Grace and her band. The first movement is based on a funk groove in D minor: Grace’s part is initially written-out but she improvises freely in the coda. The second movement is a boss nova: as in the Stan Getz album, Grace does not have a written part but improvises over a set of chord changes provided by the orchestra. The third and last movement is an Afro-Cuban groove in six-eight: Grace has a written melody at first but soon launches into improvisation on a 12-bar blues in F. She ends the concerto in a free cadenza to show off her virtuosity and saxophone chops. ENJOY!!!

Maxwell’s great grandson asked me to set these poems to music saying, the poems illuminate a picture of life in the American midwest during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His poetry serves as a lens through which we can view his . . . youthful romantic view of nineteenth-century prairie life.Since the poems are so imbued with nostalgia and 19th century romanticism, I endeavored to set them with an equally strong sense of the classic art song tradition.Curiously, these songs feel longer than they actually are. There are many pieces about which one could say the same thing with less charity, but in this case it’s a good thing: the poems are quite short (the longest is only twelve lines, the shortest only four!)The entire cycle lasts just under 12 minutes. The audio sample includes most of one song (A June Night) and all of a second (Have You Found a Place?). These are enough to give you a sense of the whole cycle.

Bach's Motet Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (Sing unto the Lord a new song) BWV 225 was first performed in 1727 and the text is based on Psalms 149 and 150. It is written for eight voices of two four-part choirs. Mr. Sauer has done a magnificent job transcribing all six of Bach's choral motets BWV 225-230 for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. This is a major undertaking. All are very worthy additions to the Trombone Ensemble repertoire. This work of three movements is about 13 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers. Mr Sauer suggests, Since a complete performance of this Motet is about thirteen minutes in length, any of the three movements may be performed separately. The top voices in each choir have parts supplied in both alto and tenor clef.

When the song was finally recorded in 1966, Paul McCartney felt it was too slow and turgid. George Martin simply solved the problem by speeding up the tape and raising the pitch by one semitone. SerapeÌs Nos. 1, 4 and 7 (subtitled Three Brothers) divide up the collection symmetrically as all three share variations of the same set of motivic layers. Nonetheless, despite their common genetic heritage, the three brothers all have radically different personalities. SerapeÌ No. 2 is called Burro for its loping cowboy-swing. Its seemingly infinite upward-spiraling progression through succeeding tonal centers reminds one of the mules on the switchbacks of the Grand Canyon. SerapeÌ No. 3, Starry Night, employs one of Korneitchouk's favorite devices of combing complex order out of chaos. Overlapping melodic patterns in 7/8, 8/8, 9/8, 10/8, 11/8, and 13/8 emerge -- three at a time -- out of constellations of apparently random notes. The brutal SerapeÌ No. 5, L.A. Smog, is rude. This SerapeÌ starts as a sonorous block of jackhammer intensity that later reveals itself to be in a very brisk 5/8 meter. In contrast, SerapeÌ No. 6 is the most peaceful and static SerapeÌ. It includes a musical portrait of the composer's refrigerator turning itself on and off in the dead of night. A drone, which suggests the 60-cycle hum of the refrigerator, anchors the subtle shifting and overlapping harmonies of the piece.

SerapeÌ No. 3, Starry Night, employs one of Korneitchouk's favorite devices of combing complex order out of chaos. Overlapping melodic patterns in 7/8, 8/8, 9/8, 10/8, 11/8, and 13/8 emerge -- three at a time -- out of constellations of apparently random notes. The brutal SerapeÌ No. 5, L.A. Smog, is rude. This SerapeÌ starts as a sonorous block of jackhammer intensity that later reveals itself to be in a very brisk 5/8 meter. In contrast, SerapeÌ No. 6 is the most peaceful and static SerapeÌ. It includes a musical portrait of the composer's refrigerator turning itself on and off in the dead of night. A drone, which suggests the 60-cycle hum of the refrigerator, anchors the subtle shifting and overlapping harmonies of the piece.

We’re really excited to present our collection of sixty of the best-loved hymns ever composed, presented in three books. Arranged for violin, cello and piano they are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. To make the music accessible to less experienced string players, the range of the notes has been kept fairly low so that many of the arrangements can be played in first position, though more experienced players would probably want to avoid open strings. The cello part does not follow the bass but instead plays an independent tenor line using to the mid to upper range of the instrument. The top note in the cello part is the F sharp above the bass clef. The piano part has been kept as straightforward as possible with the left hand playing the bass part. To extend the possible uses of this collection, there’s also a melody part printed in the bass clef, an octave lower than the violin part. This could of course be used for cello solo or indeed for any other bass clef instrument. Included in the 50-page PDF file is an optional bass part which follows the piano left hand and could be used for string bass or bass guitar. With such a small ensemble, a conductor is hardly necessary and to save on costs the pianist reads from the score. For this reason, the piano part in the score has been slightly enlarged. It is six minutes in length can be performed with an ensemble of 10 Trombones or a Trombone Choir of many players. Wagner's composition is beautifully dramatic and will be a wonderful addition to your concert. The difficulty level is moderately advanced for the top two parts, and high intermediate for the rest of the group. A college/university Trombone Ensemble can perform this work. Personent hodie is a Christmas carol originally published in the 1582 Finnish song book Piae Cantiones, a volume of 74 Medieval songs with Latin texts collected by Jacobus Finno (Jaakko Suomalainen), a Swedish Lutheran cleric, and published by T.P. Rutha. The carol became more prominent in England after being arranged for unison voices and orchestra in 1916 by Gustav Holst (1874–1934), where in its organ reduction it is often used as a processional hymn in church and cathedral services. Holst's version often forms part of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, and was last featured in the service broadcast by BBC2 from King's College Chapel, Cambridge in 2011 following the sixth lesson.This arrangement is sometimes referred to as Theodoric in reference to the composer's middle name (Theodore) and, in this setting, is the tune used for Percy Dearmer's hymn God is love, his the care.It is arranged for double wind quintet/bass.
