SPRING CALLS - for Soprano, Flute, Viola, Cello and Harp (2006) DURATION: 10:30 Minutes TEXT: Canticles 2; 1-13 (also known as The Songs of Songs or Shir Hashirim LANGUAGE: Hebrew TEXT CHARACTERS: Latin PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: Spring Calls for soprano, flute, viola, cello and harp is a setting of texts from the second chapter of Canticles (Shir Hashirim) book, known also as The Song of Songs. It is one of the five Megilot - sacred scrolls that are part of the Hebrew Bible. Canticles is mainly being read in Passover, the holiday of spring. Its theme is love and rebirth of love, symbolized by the spring. Usually, only one or two lines of Canticles texts are being set to music. However, I had an interest to create a sort of journey as well as a psychological journey of a woman who searches, awaits and discovers her love. The text parallels the awakening of love with the awakening of spring in a most vivid and colorful way. While choosing instrumentation and musical language to with work, the modal, archaic sound mixed with the new was in my vision. Therefore, one can hear colors of certain exotic and primeval instruments such as the sistrum - an ancient Egyptian percussion instrument, dated from 2500 B.C. used mostly for religious ceremonies. Spring Calls was written for Close Encounters With Music, Yehuda Hanani - artistic director. It was generously commissioned by Lola and Edwin Jaffe with deep appreciation to their support. This collection contains 10 hymns and praise choruses arranged for a one octave, 13-note chromatic scale Handbell choir with Piano accompaniment. For each song, the Piano provides an introduction then the Handbells play the melody and occasional 2-part harmony. Most songs include an optional repeat and second ending in case a longer song is desired. For each song, there is a combined score with both instruments (Handbells and Piano) on a grand staff plus two separate scores for the Handbells (one in standard format with black and white notes and the second with color-coded notes). If the combined score is more than three pages, a separate Piano only score is also provided.A color-coded note chart is also provided for each song which shows the Handbell notes used as well as the number of times each note is played.  The note distribution is helpful when assigning notes to ringers. You may want to assign fewer notes to beginners or evenly distribute the bells between all ringers. On the color-coded score, only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are full color and easier to distinguish (this does not indicate the bells need to be silenced immediately before the next beat). Also, only quarter rests are used to help visualize the number of beats per measure. As a reminder for beginning ringers, all sharps and flats are displayed (shown in the key of C) on the color-coded score. As noted above, one of the Handbell scores for each song is color-coded for easier note reading for beginning ringers.  These separate color-coded scores use the Chroma-Notes™ Colored Music System. If you have a set of Handbells with a different color scheme, Chroma-Notes Stick Ons can be purchased and applied so the Handbells match this color scheme. The number of ringers needed will vary depending on the skill level of the participants. For more advanced players, each person could be assigned two or three notes. For beginners, it is best to assign one or two notes to each person. Note assignment suggestions are included for each song and range from 4 to 8 ringers. These familiar hymns and choruses are perfect for small groups and especially beginning ringers. Most songs can be performed with as few as 5 people (4 ringers and 1 piano player). The Piano accompaniment is written for an intermediate player.Permission is granted to make as many copies as needed for one family, church, school, or other performing group. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.

This collection contains 10 familiar Christmas carols arranged for a one octave, 13-note chromatic scale Boomwhackers® choir with Piano accompaniment. For each song, the Piano provides an introduction then the Boomwhackers® play the melody and occasional 2-part harmony. Each song also includes an optional repeat and final ending in case a longer song is desired. For each song, there is a combined score with both instruments (Boomwhackers® and Piano) on a grand staff plus a separate color-coded score for the Boomwhackers®. The color-coded Boomwhackers® score uses the Chroma-Notes™ Colored Music System. If you have a set of tubes with a different color scheme, Chroma-Notes Stick Ons can be purchased and applied so the Boomwhackers® match this color scheme. A color-coded note chart is also provided for each song which shows the Boomwhackers® notes used as well as the number of times each note is played. The note distribution is helpful when assigning notes to whackers. You may want to assign fewer notes to beginners or evenly distribute the tubes between all whackers. The color-coded scores are enlarged so the colors are easier to distinguish and all sharps and flats are displayed (shown in the key of C) as reminders for beginning musicians. Also, only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are full color and easier to see. The number of whackers needed will vary depending on the skill level of the participants. For more advanced players, each person could be assigned two or three notes. For beginners, it is best to assign one or two notes to each person. Note assignment suggestions are included for each song and range from 4 to 8 whackers. These familiar Christmas carols are perfect for small groups and especially beginning musicians. Most songs can be performed with as few as 5 people (4 whackers and 1 piano player). The Piano accompaniment is written for an intermediate player.
