It consists of short pieces written or revised between 1893 and 1896, to mark the birthdays and other events in the life of the daughter of the composer's mistress.An orchestral version of the suite was scored in 1906 by Henri Rabaud, and has, like the original piano duet version, received several recordings. The best-known section of the suite, the Berceuse, has been arranged for several combinations of instruments. In Britain it became famous as the play-out tune to Listen with Mother.The suite, consisting of six short pieces, each with its own title: Berceuse, Mi-a-ou, Le jardin de Dolly, Kitty-valse, Tendresse and Le pas espagnol. It was arranged by the composer from incidental music he provided for a theatrical entertainment commissioned for Albert I, Prince of Monaco in 1919. The original score contained eight numbers, including two songs for tenor, and a choral passage. These numbers were not included in the published suite, which has four movements.The eight movements of the divertissement were almost all drawn from earlier works of Fauré:Ouverture (from an abandoned 1869 symphony)Pastorale (the only wholly new movement)Madrigal (Op. 35, 1884; for chorus and orchestra)Le Plus doux chemin (Op. 87, No. 1; for tenor and orchestra)Menuet (extensively reworked from the 1869 symphony)Clair de lune (Op. 46, No. 2; for tenor and orchestra)Gavotte (from the 1869 symphony)Pavane (Op. 50, 1887)The suite drawn from the work has remained one of Fauré's most popular works. Nocturne is a captivating work adapted from the incidental music for Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream, composed by the German master Felix Mendelssohn. Inspired by the Bard's fanciful tale of tangled lovers, mischievous fairies, and an enchanted forest, this music transports listeners to a magical midsummer eve.The story follows four lovers whose romantic entanglements become chaotically intertwined thanks to the meddling pranks of the impish Puck with his love potion. To quell the madness he has unleashed, Puck casts a spell lulling the four into a deep slumber accompanied by Mendelssohn's wistful Nocturne. When they awake, all is forgotten and order restored.This transcription for brass ensemble exquisitely captures the longing melody originally voiced by solo horn, dividing it among three horns. The euphonium and bass trombone parts are interchangeable, though the powerful euphonium is featured during the work's swelling middle section. If performing without euphonium, some phrases differ slightly.Two versions are included - the full-length original and an abridged edition better suited for certain programs and ensembles' abilities and stamina. The fourth horn plays the bassline the entire time. Repeats are included, but can be omitted.
