These three pieces for string quintet are personal responses/reflections to the various journeys that affected and shaped the lives of many. It can be argued that to some extent, South Africa continues to live with the sociopolitical consequences of this history of migration and dispossession.The unifying factor in all those who were touched by these journeys is memory. Remembering the lives left behind, the people, the songs, the dances, the connection to the land. Time might wear away the detail and new experiences splinter entire memories to fragments but nothing is completely erased. A certain driving rhythm, a flash of timbre, a fragment of melody, a cadence, a turn of musical phrase, even a few dance steps. These stay within as faint echoes, repeated sequences sometimes layered over each other, stuttering, staggering or sometimes as clear lyrical songs and dances, vibrant as the day first experienced. Safika means we arrived in Xhosa and in the context of these pieces, is an allegorical terminus of these journeys where reflection, affirmation and restoration begins.

These pieces are in jazz and Latin styles and are intended for intermediate students. This is a companion set to Let’s Go! but the music is technically more challenging. The pieces are intended for an end-of-term concert or recital but would be useful for any light hearted occasion. The 15-page piano score also includes the saxophone parts. The highest note in the 1st sax part is (written) D6 and that in the 2nd sax part is C6. Five-page parts for the two E flat alto saxophones are provided as well as an optional part for tenor sax, which is exactly the same part as the 2nd saxophone. In the piano parts the improvisation chords are shown only in the 1st alto part purely for the sake of visual tidiness, but they appear in all the saxophone parts. If the participants do not feel confident enough, the improvising sections can be omitted. The optional guitar and bass parts are combined and the bass part is similar to the left hand of the piano part. An MP3 file of all the piano accompaniments is also available as a separate item. Summer Siesta - This is a slow number in E flat major which gives the opportunity to practise a soft singing tone-quality over chromatic shifts in harmony 3. Tequila Surprise - Written in 4/4 time in E flat, this is a Latin-style fun piece that lets the participants create surprises during the empty bars. The surprises can be musical or non-musical, depending on the performance occasion and there’s an improvisation section which can be repeated as often as required. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.PDP300). 9 x 12 inches.Clarke worked on the Pieces for Two Violins and Piano during 1909, her last year at the Royal College, when Danse Bizarre gained her a scholarship. Clarke mentioned Danse Bizarre in her typescript memoir composed in the 1970s, and also discussed it with me in 1977 while helping me catalogue her compositions, but she said then that it was long lost, and made no mention of any related material. In the year 2000, however, Clarke's great-nephew Daniel Braden found.a box that Clarke had put in the back of a closet decades before and evidently forgotten, which turned out to contain a chaotic assortment of letters, papers, medical records, and music-manuscript sheets. When put in order, the latter yielded the missing inner leaf of an important viola piece and a number of previously unknown or presumed-lost arrangements and compositions, including ''Danse Bizarre and a Prelude, a Nocturne, and the beginning of a Finale for the same instruments, on the same paper, and bearing similar markings in Clarke's hand and in at least one other hand, which may well be Stanford's. The four movements were plainly developed as a suite, although there is nothing to suggest a sequence for the inner movements, and no compelling reason to believe that the Finale ever got beyond the extant eight pages. The manuscript of the Finale is noticeably rougher than those of the other movements, and several pencil-markings, apparently in another hand, suggest that some of its motivic material had not yet jelled. It seems entirely possible that Clarke had only begun this movement when a family crisis forced her to leave the College, and that she never returned to it. In any case, there is not enough of the Finale to make performance feasible, but the other movements stand quite magnificently on their own. They were recorded by Lorraine McAslan, David Juritz, and Ian Jones on Dutton CDLX 7132, released in 2003. The first public performance, by students at the Royal College under Jones's supervision, took place in May 2005 in the College's Concert Hall, where Clarke had last performed nearly a century before.

The original has been transcribed for a piano to accompany a treble instrument like flute, violin, oboe, etc. The piano score has the second voice on treble and the third voice on the bass clef of the grand staff. The flute part is in a smaller size staff above the piano grand staff. A companion book for the flute, or other treble instrument, is also available. In addition, an audio cd has been made where the flute is in the right channel, and the piano accompaniment in the left channel. This cd is useful as a practice tool to let either player practice with a recording.. Saxophones and other instruments can play the flute part without transposing if the accompanist has an electronic keyboard. to transpose the piano part. Inspired (in part) by Louis Andriessen's use of instrumentation in 'Melodie', 'Three Notes Each' is all about rhythmic counterpoint, simple, complimentary, Gamelan-inspired modes and the melding of two, very different, timbres. Post-minimalist in nature, it is challenging but not virtuosic, edgy, but not overly-dissonant. This piece is unusual in two other ways. The pianist only uses their right hand (the upper register of the piano goes particularly well with descant recorder), and each instrument is assigned only three notes. This economic use of compositional material yields surprisingly engaging results. Although written for descant (soprano) recorder and piano, this piece can also be played with treble (alto) and tenor recorder. Duration: 3 minutes.
