Commissioned for the Bay View Week of Handbells, which is held on the shores of Lake Michigan, composer Sandra Eithun chose to offer an homage to this beautiful lake and its rich history. Tales of the Great Water is comprised of three short stories. Kinship -The Gathering is a tale of friendship conjuring up images of a place where cultures merged, and people from all over gathered. Shoreline Poem is a tale of longing. So many who settled near the shores of the Great Water, once had a life in another place, perhaps in a distant land. Standing on these remote shores, they can only imagine other places or times. Boundless is a tale of sailing. An adventurous romp on the water awaits our hearty sailors in this tale with stories to tell upon their return. The delightful stories are enhanced with optional flute or violin, drum, chime tree and suspended cymbal.

Published by Bluesilhouettes Music (A0.1507077). The Ballad of Tad Sims is a programmatic multi-movement work. During the American Civil War, the drummer was a vital part of the military. They kept everyone in line and communicated orders from military leadership. Most were very young and many accounts speak to their shortness as an assett on the battle field (bullets fired tended to go higher). This piece is also part of a longer collection of works connection the final year of Abraham Lincoln’s life (and a call to one of his children by using the name Tad - not that Tad was a drummer during the war).Movement 1, Campfire Tales with the Men, sets up an imiganary tale of the drummer entertaining soldiers hanging around a campfire. Movement 2, They Shot the Fife Player (RIP Fancy Billy), reflects on the realities of war and losing friends. Movement 3, 3. Betallion Joy with Salty Sixteenths (the Almost Crazy Army), imagines the interplay between a drummer with the tree line on an open battlefield - with tons of echoes and having the drums interactive with those delayed performances.

This is the final movement from Shavano Suite, a set of four pieces inspired by folklore and campfire tales of the Maysville/Mount Shavano area in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The suite was originally scored for classical guitar duet, but this version is expanded as a concerto for guitar, string orchestra, and percussion. The percussion part requires a large drum (or timpani), glockenspiel, guiro and wind chimes. The suite has a total performance time if 17 minutes. This movement, however, can stand alone as a concert piece, with a performance time of 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Performance demand is advanced intermediate level. First of May is a song by the Bee Gees with lead vocals by Barry Gibb, released as a single from their 1969 double album Odessa. The song was first recorded in Atlantic Studios in New York and was continued in IBC Studios, London. Barry said in the booklet with Tales from the Brothers Gibb that the title of the song came from the birthday of his dog, Barnaby. Maurice recalled the session in which that song came about. Barry and I were sitting at the piano, he said, And I started playing the chords, and Barry started singing, 'When I was small and Christmas trees were tall' and I started singing along with it. We put a demo down with a vocal and we kept the piano track. Went back to England, and went into IBC Studios in London, added onto that piano track and Barry's vocal stayed on as well. We had a choir and an orchestra all on this one piano. This song was initially taped in demo form in New York City on 16 August 1968.The orchestral arrangement from maestro Bill Shepherd was featured on the second chorus. The song starts with a piano on the first verse and chorus. Shepherd's orchestra was featured in second verse and second chorus. After singing the second chorus, the singer repeated the first verse. The music was stopped when he sings don't ask me why, but time has passed us by, Someone else moved in from far away.It was quite a challenge to arrange such subtle music for a brass quintet. I am very pleased with the result though. Enjoy!

New York Mining Disaster 1941 is the debut American single by the British-Australian pop group the Bee Gees, released on 14 April 1967. It was written by Barry and Robin Gibb.Barry and Robin Gibb wrote the song while sitting on a darkened staircase at Polydor Records following a power cut. The song recounts the story of a miner trapped in a cave-in. He is sharing a photo of his wife with a colleague (Mr. Jones) while they hopelessly wait to be rescued. According to the liner notes for their box-set Tales from the Brothers Gibb (1990), this song was inspired by the 1966 Aberfan mining disaster in Wales. According to Robin, there actually had also been a mining disaster in New York in 1939, but not in 1941, and he thought New York sounded more glamourous.In the second and third verses, the lyrical lines get slower and slower, as if to indicate that life is about to end for the miners.The darker sounds of the Flügelhorn, harmonised by the French Horn, depict the dangerous alleys of death miners are facing every day. A potential fatality is lurking every day. The sustained notes of the muted trumpet and the trombone symbolise the sirens and alarms down under - as warning signs. The simple bass drum effect denotes the time that goes by during the unknown and the working pace. The tuba part suggests moving forward, despite the daunting situation.I hope to have captured some of the context and story in this arrangement by a super group. Enjoy!

RE-FLECT, for quartet percussion Full set (score+parts) Duration | 10:45 Level | advanced Re-flect is a proposal for four percussionists in which the acoustic and spatial factor is very important. The title of the work is the key to understanding these aspects and also how most of the musical discourse is fed. Re-flect means reflection, and in this sense the work is built from an axis of symmetry on which the first two percussionists reflect on the third and fourth respectively in terms of rhythms and sounds. Also, taking the title as a reference, the importance of the only tuned sound in the entire work is very evident: the RE note. From this sound, and only with this sound of a certain height, a sound game with different heights is created that is intended to envelop the stage. Last but not least, the two letters RE, have an important personal meaning for the author: the work is dedicated to Esaú Borredá (Madrid Symphony Orchestra soloist) and Raúl Benavent (RTVE Orchestra soloist), friends of the author. The game with the two initials of their names (RE) is evident. Subtlety, precision and strength are the three qualities of these great musicians that they try to reflect in the work.

Though more or less equal with the ensemble in the firstmovement, the piano clearly takes over as leader in the second and third movements as the goaldirectedformal narrative of the movements becomes more obvious.The first movement, Murky Waters, is a free fantasy in which the piano and ensemble “unpack†themusical potential of the basic material. A number of melodic ideas emerge—some lyrical and somedisjunct. A brief coda prepares for the next movement.The second movement, The Forgotten, is a lament led by the piano. The harmonic colors of thepiano’s sustaining sounds interact with the more linear textures of the winds and brass.The third movement, Casting Infinity, is purposeful and structured as a march with trio.
