ISBN 9790570484997.This piece has been created to give the flute choir a chance to introduce the entire flute family to the audience in a lighthearted, fun way. At each 'vamp' section, while the flutes continue to play the ostinato pattern the narrator (this can be the conductor or a dedicated narrator) can talk to the audience about the flute that is about to play the next 'verse' of the tune. The style of the narration can be varied depending on the nature of the situation. It may be possible to hold up the various flutes next to each other to give the audience an idea of the comparative sizes of the various instruments. You could also talk about relative pitches of each member of the flute family, their development, some repertoire (both solo and orchestral), and about the development of the flute choir as an ensemble. This piece is performable with the minimum forces of piccolo, 3 flutes, alto flute and bass flute. The sections featuring the other, rarer member of the flute family can be omitted by cutting from the end of any vamp bar to the letter where the next available solo instrument takes the tune. Following the entry of the last solo instrument (the piccolo) there are two sections for the full flute choir. One also features some hidden flute 'lollipops' that you may or may not want to draw the audiences attention to, and the final section is a jazzy finale with the option of swinging the quavers. Above all, this arrangement was produced to be usable. Please feel free to adapt it in any way you like to help us introduce audiences to the great sound of the flute choir!

Extinction Events (2nd movement - It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo by John Gibson was written as a submission to the International Clarinet Association's 2018 Composition Competition. Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work for very advanced players, although the 2nd movement is easier. This is the second movement only...the others may be purchased separately: Buzzy Delights, Walrus Jump, and Yaguarete Surprise (Argentine Jaguar). The entire set of 4 movements may also be purchased. Simply type extinction events Gibson in the search bar at the top.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved. Extinction Events by John Gibson Written for the woodwind choir of a concert band, it is a three movement work lasting about 8 minutes and is for advanced players. The movements are: Buzzy Delights (Honey Bees), It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo, and Jaguar Surprise.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. The solo clarinet represents the chant of the traditional prayer leader while the organ plays the response of the congregation of the synagogue. The piece ends with a cadenza of the solo clarinet to which an optional organ improvisation can be added. Barbara Heller dedicated this chorale to the memory of Elke Mascha Blankenburg (1943–2013). Talking about her before the first performance, the composer said: ‘She was open-hearted with a really tender soul, very trusting. Her creativity knew no limits; she was also an almost fanatical campaigner for music by women. In the music you will hear now I have attempted to convey some aspects of her personality: charming, loving, obstinate, committed, volatile, tragic, crazy, untamed, tender and anguished.’ The various sections of this chorale may be performed in a correspondingly contrasting manner: searching, hesitant, visionary, focused, volatile, accusatory, hopeful, etc., with use of rubato and powerful contrasts in dynamic and tone quality.
