Drea's Accordes is an arrangement of a solo guitar piece, Air in the Dorian Mode, from my set of Diatonic Pieces where no accidentals are employed other than in the key signature. The Air has a distinctive Renaissance character. The arrangement was created to serve as incidental music for a production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING by the Southern Shakespeare Company in Cascades Park in Tallahassee, FL in May of 2022. The title Drea's Accordes is in part a reference to my wife who played the violin part in that production, and in part a bit of word-play on Drewrie's Accordes, a quasi-famous Elizabethan lute duet. It also appears in Ab in the Harpsichord Concerto (BWV 1056) where the string accompaniment is, interestingly, all pizzicato. There is speculation of a lost Violin Concerto in G minor where this movement would have been set in Bb.I have set it in A, mostly due to my guitar instincts, but violinists seem to prefer it in Bb. Hung #6495931. Published by Stanley P. Hung (A0.1071753). Inspire Infinite Potential is the first original composition of Stanley P. Hung. It was composed for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Concert Band 70th Anniversary in 2019. MIT Concert Band was founded by students in fall of 1948 and directed for 51 years by conductor John D. Corley. He directed the band from its inception in 1948 until his retirement last spring in 1999. Dr. Thomas E. Reynolds continued the job of music education at MITCB up to now about 20 years. He is the current music director and conducting the band together with co-conductor Collin Myers. (Reference: band.mit.edu) Mr. Hung had participated in a few public performances of MIT Concert Band and played trombone. His footprints not only appeared at MIT in Cambridge, but also in New York (2013), Maine (2014), and Philadelphia (2019) during spring tours. To come up with an idea by our originality then take it into practice was the spirit inspired by such ingenuity group. Therefore, Stanley tried to add this spirit into the music work Inspire Infinite Potential at creation stage. Its U.S. premiere was conducted by Dr. Reynolds and performed by the MIT Concert Band in campus (2019.12.10). The second edition is mostly based on the previous version. Some of notes, chords, articulations, and rhythms have been updated.

It was begun in 2013 and completed in 2016; the total duration is 6:41. The texts by Solomon Ibn Gabriol, Samuel L. Clemens (aka Mark Twain), and one attributed to Fra Giovanni Giocondo but probably written by Earnest Temple Hargrove, take the listener on a journey from grief/death to hope/heaven. Themusical language is unapologetically chromatic. Other than perhaps the most academic of composers these days, chromaticism has largely fallen into disuse. Although the vast majority of my music written since around 1998 is either tonal or more often modal, I occasionally return to a chromatically saturated musical language to express certain emotions through sounds that are alien to thosemusical languages. I did so in the present title with the intent of painting the three texts more poignantly. While most passages feature familiar-sounding triads and octaves, the melodies, harmonies and cadences sound unfamiliar. It is to be hoped that the listener will find the music both moving and engaging, challenging one to listen to these three songs in new ways.-Stanley M. Hoffman, 9/11/2016, fifteen years after 9/11.

UPC: 600313484094.The duet version of Fantasypiece for violoncello and double bass was composed in 2001, an arrangement for chamber orchestra was completed in 2002. The title has multiple meanings. The musical language, what I regard as free tonality, is one that I had always wanted to employ but never found occasion to use. By free, I mean employing unusual dissonances in a controlled manner within a tonal framework.

That piece has only ever been performed once by the New York Virtuoso Singers conducted by Harold Rosenbaum. The transcription was created to give the music more potential life because so few choirs can perform a work as chromatic and rhythmically challenging as that anymore. (#sad) Also, the resultant transcription is quite stirring in its own right. .

The libretto is comprised of the insightful observations of a young Jewish boy—Abraham “Abramek” Koplowicz—who was trapped by the Nazis in the Lodz ghetto and who later died in Auschwitz. The libretto appears before each scene in the scores.This may be a relatively brief piece, but it is a major one for me and posthumously for the author. I am fortunate to be the only person given blanket gratis permission to set the words of Abraham Koplowicz to music. He composed a book of poetry, plays, and artwork while imprisoned in the Lodz Ghetto before perishing later in Auschwitz before he could become a Bar Mitzvah. The contents of that book are quite good, sophisticated for his age. Abraham's late half-brother, Eliezer Grynfeld—who found the book in the 1990s—and I eventually became good friends. The Pope once kissed Eliezer's hand. That is how highly regarded this collection is and, by some stroke of luck or fate, I have got exclusive musical rights to the book until it enters the public domain. In my settings of AT THE CLOTHING DEPARTMENT and TO GET A RATION, I combine the musical language of Schoenberg's A SURVIVOR FROM WARSAW very nearly with the instrumentation of Stravinsky's A SOLDIER'S TALE - only the percussion instruments differ. The musical language of these brief opera scenes is appropriately terse, very much in keeping with the oppressiveness of imprisonment. Please have a look and a listen. It was unsuccessful with that instrumentation because of the sustained notes, so the composer withdrew that version and transcribed it for string sextet. The musical language is atonal, and the musical style is intentionally fragmented. This piece is subtitled From a Prison. It sounds like a prisoner is trapped, wants out, and is banging on the bars of his or her cell.

Handy in the blues style and published in September 1914. It was one of the first blues songs to succeed as a pop song and remains a fundamental part of jazz musicians' repertoire. Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Bessie Smith, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo, and the Boston Pops Orchestra (under the directions of both Arthur Fiedler and Keith Lockhart) are among the artists who have recorded it. The song has been called the jazzman's Hamlet. Composer William Grant Still arranged a version of the song in 1916 while working with Handy.The 1925 version sung by Bessie Smith, with Louis Armstrong on cornet, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1993.
