Published by Sahale Studios (A0.1329920). Once there was an oboist who was a member of a chamber ensemble consisting of flute, oboe, cello, and, piano. The oboist was highly skilled; a virtouoso who could ornament without the slighest effort. They were notorious for doing so.One day during dress rehearsal, the oboist, familiar enough with the music began ornamenting and adding stylistic flourishes, becoming increasingly carried away with their part. It finally reaches a point where the others stop playing and let the oboe go completely overboard with a full cadenza. Not far into the solo, the oboe realizes everyone else has stopped playing and stops themself and the rehearsal continues. However, not much farther along, the oboist becomes carried away in their part again, resulting in the other musicians pausing again as the oboist proceeds into another cadenza passage before realizing the others have stopped again.The rehearsal continues, and they all get further along (due to the oboe simply not playing), but when the oboe plays the melody, the ornaments and finesse return in full display, and finally the piano cuts the oboe off. At the slightest hint of an ornament all the other musicians in the ensmeble join in and cut off the oboe. From this, the oboist sinks into low spirits.The rehearsal continues unabated through the next section, and when the oboist enters, they play their part as written, but the ornamentations begin creeping in again. But rather than admonish the oboist the others instead speed the music up into the recapitulation section and for the remainder of the piece and rehearsal they all go wild with flourishes and ornamentations of their own, bringing the piece to a rollicking and lively conclusion.

John Bull was an English composer, organist, virginalist, and organ builder who lived from 1562/63 to 1628. He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a doctor of music at the universities of both Oxford and Cambridge. Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. He was known for his outstanding technical ability and keyboard virtuosity, and his music is distinguished by unfailing resourcefulness in devising new musical ideas. Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces, published in Musica Britannica. He was also one of the contributors to Parthenia, a collection of keyboard music published in 1611. Bull wrote an anthem, God the Father, God the Son, for the wedding in 1613 of the Princess and the Elector Palatine, in addition to his keyboard compositions, verse anthems, canons, and other works. Bull's music ranked among the foremost composers along with Byrd, Gibbons, and Tomkins.John Bull had several contemporaries who were also prominent composers during the Renaissance period. Some of these composers include:William Byrd: Byrd was an English composer and one of the most influential figures in English Renaissance music. He was a contemporary of John Bull and is considered one of the greatest composers of his time. Byrd's compositions include sacred choral music, keyboard works, and consort music.Orlando Gibbons: Gibbons was an English composer and organist who lived during the same period as John Bull. He was known for his sacred choral music, particularly his anthems and verse anthems. Their expressive harmonies and intricate counterpoint characterize Gibbons' compositions.Thomas Tomkins: Tomkins was another English composer active during the same time as John Bull. He was known for his sacred choral music, including anthems and services. Tomkins' compositions are notable for their rich harmonies and expressive melodies.Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck: Sweelinck was a Dutch composer and organist who was highly regarded during the Renaissance period. He was known for his keyboard music, particularly his variations and fantasies. Pura Alegria is one of Eddie Lewis’ en clave compositions, where every rhythm from every phrase in the piece is derived from the clave. The clave is a rhythm from west Africa that came to the tropical islands with the slaves. From there, hundreds of years later, the rhythm became the underlying groove for a number of modern Latin dance music styles. Eddie Lewis was exposed to the clave rhythms during a period of twenty years when he was making his living primarily as a salsa trumpet player. While Eddie’s compositions are not salsa, his writing has been forever influenced by that music and the people. And that influence is not limited to only the rhythms. We are only emphasizing the rhythms here because of the prominence of the clave in Pura Alegria. Stirling High School, East London, South Africa Eddie composed Pura Alegria for the students in the brass ensemble at Stirling High School in East London, South Africa. The students prepared it as part of a presentation and Eddie was honored to contribute something for them to work on and perform. The request came from Eddie’s good friend, Leonard Brandt. Leonard is a professional trumpet player in South Africa and also teaches applied brass at the high school. When Eddie was in South Africa for the jazz festival in Grahamstown (2016), Leonard arranged a personal performance of Pura Alegria for him in one of the empty classrooms. The composition was a smashing success and the students and the audience all enjoyed it! Skill Level When Eddie does a commission, he goes to great lengths to map out the skills of the individual players. Often times, his method’s skill levels don’t apply. Please keep in mind that skill levels in published music are not about how good the students are. Students will always have mixed skill sets. That’s part of what it means to be human. We are good at some things and bad at others. So the skills of the individual parts in Pura Alegria are varied, not only from part to part, but from skill to skill. That said, the highest note in the first trumpet part is written high C, and the rhythms are syncopated (because of the clave influence). We would put most of that first part in our Trumpet Pro skill level. The highest note in the second part is written A above the staff. The highest note in the third trumpet part is top line F. Practice Recommendations Pay special attention to the articulations, which can feel a little awkward, but really make the piece. Sometimes the eighth-notes are long and the quarter-notes are short. Other times the quarter-notes are long and the eighth-notes are short. Also be careful with the dynamics. There will be a tendency to play the entire piece too loud. Because it feels like that kind of piece. However, if you play it that way, it will ruin some of the compositional effects. This is especially true for the keyboard. If you are performing with a keyboard, not an acoustic piano, then what’s the amplification that it doesn’t bury the rest of the ensemble. You cannot have the keyboard set to the same volume as you would for a full jazz ensemble class. Other than that, have fun with this piece. The name, Pura Alegria, in English means Pure Joy! The rhythms are delightful and the melodies are infectious.

The third time, Tuba takes the melody, while Trumpet 1 and Trombone play counterpoint; eventually Horn in F blends in with harmony. The fourth time through, Horn in F has the melody, and Trombone and Tuba play counterpoint; Trumpet 2 joins on the last phrase. The fifth time through, Trumpet 2 again starts with the melody, while Trumpet 1 adds fanfare embellishments. All wind up with a straightforward, triumphant finish. The lowest note is D just above Middle C and the top note is G just above the staff. In Thailand, the Royal Anthem is performed at all formal occasions; it's played at the beginning of every concert and recital and also in movie theaters before the main feature. In this arrangement the Thai text has been Romanized for the use of non-Thai singers, because the vast majority of Thai people know the words by heart anyway. The key is E flat major and the vocal range makes no excessive demands of the singer. The keyboard part has been simplified and chords are shown above the staff. To give confidence to the singer, the right-hand piano part reinforces the melody. Experienced pianists will probably prefer to adapt the right hand part as they see fit. This anthem is also available in arrangements for SATB or instrumental ensembles from the same publisher.
