A Whitman Triptych: II. What Is the Grass? (Downloadable)
Tenor voice solo, SATB choir unaccompanied - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SK…

Tenor voice solo, SATB choir unaccompanied - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8322-E Composed by David Conte. Advanced/Collegiate. Secular, 21st Century, Americana, Children, Creation/Nature, Hope/Assurance. Instrument part. 15 pages. Duration 5 minutes, 42 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8322-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8322-E). UPC: 600313483226. English. The three a cappella choral pieces that comprise “A Whitman Triptych†were composed between 2012 and 2014. O Setting Sun was commissioned by the Madison Chamber Choir, Madison, Wisconsin, Anthony Cao, conductor, and was premiered on April 20th, 2012. “What is the Grass†was composed for Cappella SF, Ragnar Bohlin, conductor, and is being premiered on tonight’s concert. Facing West was commissioned in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge by the International Orange Chorale, Zane Fiala, conductor, and was premiered on May 27th, 2012. I first set Whitman to music in 1986,when I adapted part of “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed†as the basis for my composition “Invocation and Dance.†I went on to set “Good-Bye, My Fancy†for Male Chorus and Soprano Saxophone in 1992, and “Song of the Open Road†for Mixed Chorus and Piano in 2004. Like so many composers, I have found the visionary quality of Whitman’s verse inspiring; the vigor and intensity of the poetry seem naturally to draw out music. “What is the Grass?†is also an adaptation of a much longer poem, one of Whitman’s deepest, and most mysterious. The poem begins as a child-like meditation on grass; as hope, as an embodiment of new life and new growth in the plant world. Then suddenly there is a somber turn with the line “And now it seems to me the beautiful uncut hair of graves.†Here Whitman enters an extended mediation on how grass connects life and death, informed by his experiences in the Civil War. Hope returns with the line: “They are alive and well somewhere,†leading to the mysterious final line: “And to die is different from what anyone supposed, and luckier…†Here Whitman affirms that death can be an initiation into a broader participation of existence. In the words of poet Ivan M. Granger, Whitman offers a “Zen-like riddle that doesn’t offer an answer so much as a pathway of questioning.†My musical setting follows Whitman’s exploration, first taking a child’s point of view, expressed with lilting melodies set in a lively compound meter. The entry of the tenor soloist indicates a change of mood to the serious. The first mood returns, leading to a climax on the words “And led forward life…â€, set in 9-part harmony. The mood turns reverent, as the tenor soloist intones: “All goes onward and outward; nothing collapses.†The piece ends with a tone of gentle, slightly ironic questioning. -David ConteDuration: 5:42

Who Put The Bomp (in The Bomp Ba Bomp Ba Bomp)

Rhythm Section,Small Ensemble Bass Clef Instrument,Bass Guitar,Bass Trombone,Double Bass,Drum Set,Drums,Keyboard,Piano,Tenor Trombone,Trombone/Baritone B.C. - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.961216 By Barry Mann. By Barry Mann and Gerry Goffin. Arranged by Robert Coil. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz,Pop. Score and parts. 40 pages. Polished Brass #6704317. Published by Polished Brass (A0.961216). This classic Doo-Wop song is arranged for trombone quintet with optional rhythm section. The range of the first and second trombone goes briefly up to B flat4, the third trombone goes up to G4. The range of the fourth trombone is a modest A flat2 to F4, but has the opening solo. The Bass Trombone provides the rhythmic drive and harmonic foundation, with range consistently low, from A flat1 to E flat3, thus requiring a player with solid technique and determination to keep the tempo from sagging. (ASPN pitch notation)This arrangement may be played by trombone quintet with or without the optional rhythm section. When performed without the rhythm section accompaniment, it is essential for each player to strive to keep the tempo up. A number of pieces popular in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s had lyrics that had no meaning but were nonsense syllables (non-lexical vocables) that were sung. Anyone familiar with the era will recognize songs such as: Witch Doctor (Ooo, eee, ooo ah ah, ting tang, Walla walla, bing bang), Sh-Boom (Do-roo-do-do, sh-boom), Blue Moon (Bom ba ba bom ba bom ba bom bom, Dang a dang dang, ding a dong ding). Often, the lead singer had lyrics that told a story, while a backup chorus just sang, Ooo, Aaah. The genre became known as Doo Wop. By the 1960s, the genre, with its simple chords, nonsense syllables, often sung a cappella or featuring a 4 or 5 part vocal group with simple accompaniment, was starting to fade in popularity. The song Who Put the Bomp manages to be both a part of the genre and a nostalgic reflection on its passing. This arrangement captures the essence of the era with close harmonies and a lively beat. The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. Dr. Coil is the leader of the Bones of Cincinnatus trombone ensemble in Cincinnati, OH.

Small Ensemble Bass Voice,Drums,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1084014 By Sting. By Sting. Arranged by Louis Drummond. Jazz,Pop,Rock. Score and parts. 14 pages. Louis Drummond Van Rensburg #688236. Published by Louis Drummond Van Rensburg (A0.1084014). Englishman In New York is a song by English singer Sting, from his second album Nothing Like the Sun, released in October 1987. The single, released in February 1988, became a hit in several countries, reaching the Top 40 (and sometimes Top 20) in France, Netherlands, Spain and Belgium. In South Africa it peaked at no. 9. In my Piano Trio arrangement (piano, bass and drums) for intermediate players, the bass and drums and L.H. of the piano play a typical Reggae feel. Later it goes into a swing section with a written improvised solo played by the piano. Score and parts are available.

Small Ensemble Piano Accompaniment,Trombone - Digital Download SKU: A0.961368 Composed by Charles Francois Gounod. Arranged by Philip Brink. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 7 pages. Philip Brink #6287941. Published by Philip Brink (A0.961368). This is a beautiful, singing aria sung by Valentine, the brother of the heroine Marguerite, as he goes to battle. Faust takes her away later in the plot, but for the moment all is tenderness and lyrical beauty. The solo part has a range of C below middle c to g above middle c. Phrasing and legato are major focuses, while good breath control is important.
