Allen Pote.A Musical for Young Voices - The Story of the Tower of Babel Leading to Pentecost In Genesis 11 and Acts 2 we read about two events where languages helped fulfill God's purpose. When the people of Babel built the tower, they were led by the human spirit and ended up in confusion, scattered over the earth, speaking different languages. At Pentecost, people from many nations, speaking different languages, were led by the Holy Spirit; and even in their diversity, they were united. This 35-minute musical for young voices (Unison w/opt. Two-Part) links together these Old Testament and New Testament stories with songs, humor and heart. The message is, if we follow the Great Commandments - ?loving God and loving our neighbors, no matter how different from us they are or what language they speak - we will surely be filled with the Holy Spirit. A score with piano accompaniment and a singers edition without the piano part are both included for the one price. You may make as many copies as you require for use by your choir. Separate audio MP3s and instrumental parts are available, and there is a video of the debut performance on the Hope YouTube channel.

This event came to be called the first vision. This vision proved to Joseph Smith that God is not dead. God and His son Jesus Christ are alive and love us today. They have not left us alone here in the world to work out our own salvation. The greatest teachers and preachers of our times cannot save us for they are subject to death. Only Jesus Christ could and did break the bands of death. God talks to us today through His prophets. He does not speak to us through those who say He is gone and has left them in charge. The only way to find truth about God is to study His doctrine and then talk with Him. Ask Him if what you are learning is true. With 4,300 Christian religions on the earth today, we can know through revelation from God which is His true church. There can be only one. God told Joseph that He had a great work for him to do. God sent an angel who revealed to Joseph plates of gold. These plates of Gold were records kept by Israelite prophets in ancient America. God brought them to this land of promise before the Jews were carried away captive into Babylon. I know this is true. You can read the Book of Mormon. You can ask God for yourself if it is true. Then you too can know, for God will answer your prayer.

We were in the midst of a vast economic crisis leaving millions in poverty, racism had once again found its foothold in the foreground of US culture, climate change had decimated the west coast in flames while southern coastal cities were being bombarded with floods from storms. We have also been forced to see the ugliness of domestic terrorists establishing themselves in the hopes of hurting their fellow citizens. However, these issues pale in comparison to the utter devastation we have faced from COVID-19. As I write this note, we are just shy of nearly a quarter of a million people having senselessly died from COVID-19. The utter failure we’ve had in leadership and lack of empathy from our fellow citizens have caused countless families to now have empty seats at their table. There was no need for this. Hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children have died from means that could have been completely preventable. When I was asked to write this piece, I wanted to come up with a simple concept as an elegy to those lost to the virus. A simple question arose; What will we say? 50 years from now, how will we answer to those younger generations while we collectively sat by and did nothing to help each other? How are we going to excuse letting the rot that has sunk in go unpunished? How do we defend the indefensible? This question haunts me. The music you will hear channels my answer to that question. There is no true resolution. There is no happy ending. When we have finally moved on past this pandemic, we are still left in the wake of hundreds of thousands of dead citizens. One day it will hit us all how many lives we really lost. So I ask this; while you listen, reflect on every individual who suffered at the hands that did not act. Allow yourself to absorb the true gravity of what we have experienced. Give those victims a few minutes of your time. When the time comes for you to be asked, what will you say?

Frost frowned upon this particular practice and after a second failed attempt to get permission to publish the work, I decided to write my own verse for this composition (my first actually) and use a subject familiar to me, the story of Daedalus and Icarus Journey to freedom.After his arrival in Crete, Daedalus found that Minos would not let him leave. He subsequently obtained wax and feathers and fashioned wings for himself and his son Icarus. With these they succeeded in flying away, but Icarus, flying too near to the sun, melted his wings, fell into the sea near Crete, and drowned; Daedalus escaped to Italy only to fall into the hands of the local King Kokalos who drowned him in hot water.
