A song celebrating the people of Gander, Newfoundland & Labrador in Canada who helped close to 7,000 stranded airline passengers after September 11, 2001. The story of Gander and the surrounding towns has been immortalized in the Broadway show, Come From Away. The song is written in a Celtic/Newfoundland style. This song features the use of an Ugly Stick, a traditional Newfoundland percussion instrument. With ten thousand waiting on the ground, seven thousand on their way The schools and halls and churches were preparing for their stay And not only in Gander, but in places all around ‘Cause you’ve got to pull together when the world drops into town. Chorus: So raise a glass to them, let’s sing a song to cheer For all the workers, cooks and clerks, for all the volunteers Who showed such kindness, who stepped up when chips were down ‘Cause you’ve got to pull together when the world drops into town All the stores they opened up their doors, the supplies, how fast they flew! “Take it all to help the plane people, it’s the least that we can do!†Aunt Winnie baked two dozen of her partridgeberry pies She said, “I think those plane people will be in for some surprise!†So the people were all settled, and much to their delight There were home-cooked meals and showers in homes, even trips to see the sights Though they came from countries ‘round the world, they did seem to all fit in And in kitchen parties here and there, new found friends were being screeched in. DARKTOWN STRUTTERS' BALL - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Shelton Brooks wrote this bouncy little song in a different age - where Darktown was an area of a city much like Chinatown is today. It tells the story of the Ball where women would wear their finest dresses and men would strut - a sort of swaggering dance.Derek Hasted writes I first arranged this piece for the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra, in a Dixieland-jazz setting, which I have retained in this version for 4 guitars or a large ensemble. The bass part would also suit an octave (or contra) guitar reading from treble clef. This line is a little easier than the other lines, so it's ideal for a mixed ability ensemble as well as making a real contrast in a conventional guitar concert. In the final chorus, one can almost hear a tenor banjo above the bass, and a clarinet swirling above the tune. Audiences love this piece!

Once on board the train, the boy meets other children from various backgrounds who are all wanting to see Santa, as well as a magical train crew, headed by the Conductor. 'The Polar Express' stars Tom Hanks, providing voices and motion-capture for 6 characters, including the Conductor and Santa Claus. With an incredible original soundtrack from Hollywood legend Alan Silvestri, combined with other iconic Christmas recordings, 'The Polar Express' became an instant hit, and has embedded itself in Christmas popular culture.'When Christmas Comes To Town' is performed in the film by the characters Billy the Lonely Boy and Hero Girl, with singing voices provided by Matthew Hall and Meagan Moore, and tells the story of their differing perspectives of Christmas, with a shared desire to see Santa. This new arrangement from Matt Shaw is scored for two solo Tenor Horns with brass band accompaniment (including a tutti 2nd horn part), and captures all the magic and innocence of the original song, whilst being intentionally scored to be approachable and playable by bands of all levels. The solo lines are scored within a sensible range, and are supported by warm chords from the middle and lower band, with a continuous magical presence from the percussion writing. Originally arranged for, and performed by, the Wingates Brass Band, this arrangement promises to be a fantastic new addition to any band Christmas programme, as both a new and accessible feature and an instant crowd pleaser. The Journey is a twenty-minute cantata extracted from the opera The Dreamers. The opera was commissioned and produced by the Sonoma City Opera in 1996; Antoinette Kuhry, producer; musical direction by John Miner; stage direction by Sanrda Bernhard. The Dreamers captures a formative moment in American history where characters are separated by their cultural and racial differences, and brought together by their dreams and their longing for a new home. The Journey was commissioned by the Oakland East Bay Symphony, Michael Morgan, conductor, and was premiered at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, CA on May 18th, 2001. To set the scene for the excerpt here entitled The Journey: The entire town of Sonoma is gathered at The Collonade Theater to watch an amateur production of Shakespeare's Othello. An unpleasant racial incident occurs which brings the performance to a halt. To smooth thingsover, a sing-a-long is proposed. The song chosen is My Old Kentucky Home by Stephen Foster. After a brief statement of that tune in the orchestra, the entire company enters a dream-state, as six characters from the opera, with commentary by the chorus, sing arias about home. Johnny Rowe, an American soldier stationed in Sonoma, serves as a kind of master-of-ceremonies. Black Sam is a freed slave working as a gambler in Sonoma to earn money to buy his wife out of slavery. Indian Princess Isadora is the last of her tribe. Jim and Mary Eastin have migrated to California from Kentucky. Lizzy Fine is a widow who sings a farewell to her departed husband. The finale of this sequence is an Octet, where all six characters and the men and women of the chorus sing their various texts together, ending with the words from Stephen Foster: Weep no more.

It is not a difficult piece once learned. It is really a great fun for the players and very easy listening too, It covers a very wide range of audience demands. There is a groove feeling on it that makes it very pleasant to most all people. Because of its plasticity the piece allows many interpretations, therefore I did not made much use of interpretation symbols in order to leave to the performers the freedom of doing their own. Bowing and fingering are left totally virgin at the hands of the schools or the creativity of the performing Artists. P.S. - The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Imagine a little railway station, a train that comes and stops, and your friends go inside. As you step on the little stairs to go inside, the doors close letting you out, and the train starts rolling. It speeds up very fast and enough so you can`t jump out of the little stairs back to the ground, you are holding now to the iron bars around the doors of the train, you see your friends and the people inside but they can`t see you, they can`t hear you, and you notice that the train is now on a bridge so high, that you can`t see the earth any more. Wind is blowing around me and I feel this cosmic cold and everything starts to twist around in a gigantic spiral. I still feel the Gravity but it goes in all directions at the same time pushing me violently and I feared to fail the grip on the iron bars and fall down, in an imaginary endless abyss. Little by little the speed of the events slows down progressively until everything freezes. Now, The other side of the bridge does not exist at all, neither the beginning or up or down. The train disappeared in a glimpse and I noticed that I was not falling down, just hanging there out in hyperspace, Free from Gravity. I lost the fear of falling in the abyss, it felt kind a good, because the only thing that I could see was light, pure beautiful bright white light, I was floating in light, I realised I could stay there forever, but then I felt lonely and wanted to come back home. The church was made a cathedral in 1564 when the city was granted its bishopric. The cathedral was built on the site of the Aljama Mosque in the first third of the 14th century. The name of this structure, El Salvador Cathedral, literally means the Cathedral of the Transfiguration. The cathedral has three portals: the Puerta de las Cardenas (Portal of the Chains, 14th century) is in Islamic style, the Puerta de Loreto (mid-15th century) is Gothic, and Puerta de la Anunciación (Portal of the Annunciation, built in 1588 by Juan Inglés), which has a Renaissance-style triumphal arch-shape. Part 1: Introitis. The saxophone mimics a chant based on the metre of the Introitis: Rorate, caeli, desuper, et nubes pluant iustum: aperiatur terra, et germinet Salvatorem (Bedew us, heavens, from above; ye clouds, rain down the Just One. Let the earth be opened up, and produce the Saviour. The intervals 1 (tonic), 5 (dominant), 6 (super-dominant) and 4 (subdominant), based on the year 1564 referred to in the section above, are used as the basis for the harmony progression for the string section. Part 2: Puerta de las Cardenas Acts 12:3–19 says that Peter was put into prison by King Herod, but the night before his trial an angel appeared to him, and told him to leave. Peter's chains fell off, and he followed the angel out of prison, thinking it was a vision (verse 9). The prison doors opened of their own accord, and the angel led Peter into the city. The visit from the angel, release from the chains and the prison, as well as the journey into the city is expressed against the background of the Islamic design of the portal, hence the referral to Arabian rhythms and scales in the music. Part 3: Puerta de Loreto The Puerta de Loreto is of gothic design. Loreto refers to the Italian city of Loreto in the province of Ancona. It is said that the holy house where the Mother Mary lived in Nazareth was translated miraculously to Loreto on December 19, 1294 - more than 700 years ago. The house did not go straight to Loreto, but in the year 1291 it was miraculously transported from Nazareth to the town of Tersatto in Dalmatia (Croatia). The local population, filled with astonishment, did not know how to explain its sudden appearance. Their Bishop, who was gravely ill, now appeared in their midst cured. He had prayed to the Virgin Mary that he might be strong enough to see the prodigy for himself, and the Mother of God appeared to him, surrounded by Angels, saying: My son, you have called for me, and here I am. I came to give you succor and to reveal to you the mystery [of the translation of the Holy House] you desire to know. The holy dwelling is the very house where I was born and raised. It was there that I received the good news brought by the Archangel Gabriel and I conceived the Divine Infant by the operation of the Holy Ghost. It was there that the Word was made flesh... For you to bear witness to all that I am telling you now, you will suddenly be cured and return to full health after the long illness you have borne, so that through you all will believe in this miracle. Part 4: Puerta de la Anunciación The Annunciation is the Christian celebration of the announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God, marking his Incarnation. Gabriel told Mary to name her son Jesus, meaning Saviour. Part 5: Exit The work ends with a re-interpretation of the first section, the Introitis. This is to bind the work together, but also to again reflect on the text, as stated: Rorate, caeli, desuper, et nubes pluant iustum: a periatur terra, et germinet Salvatorem, and to comtemplate how that gives meaning to the being, essence and history of the Catedral de Orihuela.

Considered a major contribution to the develop of Czech music, The Bartered Bride by BedÅ™ich Smetana is a comic opera in three acts that premiered, in its final version, in 1870; having not been a great success when the original two-act version premiered at the Provisional Theatre, Prague on 30 May 1866. The opera was part of Smetana’s aim to create a native Czech music after the conductor Johann von Herbeck commented that Czechs were incapable of making music of their own. Whilst he avoided the direct use of folksongs, Smetana did use numerous traditional Bohemian dance forms, such as the furiant and the polka, leading to music that was Czech in spirit.“Sold Brideâ€, a more accurate translation of the original Czech title (Prodaná nevÄ›sta), tells the story of two lovers (MaÅ™enka and Jenik) who want to marry despite MaÅ™enka’s father’s obligations for his daughter to marry the son of a wealthy landowner, Micha. Scheming, condition proposals and secret identities leads to a happy ending.The polka was not in the original 1866 version. A revision in October 1866 saw the addition of a gypsy dance near the start of act 2. But by the next performance in January 1869, this had been replaced by a polka. In June 1869, a new polka replaced the January version’s (as well as being moved to the end of act 1) and this is the one that we know and love today.This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Perform this original work of Celtic Irish setting from her CD (Gypsy Road,2012) scored for harp ensemble of intermediate to advanced players.  Scored in E minor with no lever changes it features a creative slip-jig with lush and effective harmonies.  A rare opportunity to showcase programmatic skills for the harp ensemble.  The dark and mysterious musical message will touch the hearts of all who hear it.About the CompositionI wrote this when I was very angry at the world.  Someday I might meet a black hound on a dark night... and we’ll both go hunting together.Black Dogs,  Black Hounds, The Hounds of Hell,  Dogs of Hell,  Gabriel Hounds, Yell Hounds,  Barghest,  Black Dog of the Hanging Hills, Gurt Dog or the Hounds of Herne the Hunter… by whatever name, they are a common feature in the folklore of the British Isles.  The Black Hounds of Cŵn Annwn are the spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh myth.  Early Christians came to dub these mythical creatures as The Hounds of Hell or Dogs of Hell and erroneously theorized they were therefore owned by Satan.  However, the Annwn of medieval Welsh tradition is an otherworldly paradise and not a hell or abode of dead souls. The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. They are supposed to hunt on specific nights in the autumn and winter when it is believed that the howling of these huge dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them. *************************************************About the Composer Laura Olson (ASCAP) is a retired California music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in stringed instruments and orchestras. She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). Her experience as a symphonic musician, ethnic musician, and Film/TV composer led her to combining the three aspects of music into her own compositions and arrangements; storybook music in cinematic style. She is the owner of her recording and publishing label Blue Steer Studios(ASCAP) which allows her to combine her composing skills with knowledge of both the business and publishing aspects of music industry. Winner of a Silver Ace Award from the Las Vegas Film Festival she has composed music for all types of media, including Film/TV, web and advertising, and her own personal music in audio CD and sheet music. Crosswinds represents a melding of the traditional woodwind sound of the clarinet with digital live electronic techniques, and the piece explores the potential for this relationship in three parts.To begin the piece, the stage performer breathes through the clarinet, which serves to inform the electronic elements to come. This initial breath is captured by the computer program and is modified and reduplicated to create the sonic tone of a soft wind always present beneath the piece to come. This is the first step in uniting the digital and woodwind elements, as the same breath which animates the clarinet also activates the electronics.From this most fundamental element, the breath becomes a single sustained note from which the computer will generate all of its subsequent tones. The impression is one of a mentor relationship, where the traditional instrument provides the tools and the support for the electronic elements. The disposition is contemplative, though it alternates between a subdued easiness and a playful mystery, as if to introduce the digital aspects to the range and variety of the clarinet’s moods. The rapport between the two is hesitant in the first part: the electronics contributing a subtle reverb as the performer teaches the computer dexterity through a number of broad leaps, hinting at but never fully embracing the main motif.As the theme becomes more self-assured, the digital element now produces its own tones, parroting the clarinet melody to signal its readiness to be an equal partner in the conversation. As the clarinet begins the second part of the piece, the computer now provides a harmonizing undercurrent each time it is invited to do so by the performer.In the third part, the electronics play counterpoint to the skill of the clarinetist, the two elements intricately entwined. From the elemental sound of wind first produced by the performer and perpetuated by the computer, the piece concludes in a celebration of the relationship built between the two, and the main theme is fully expressed as the two take it in variations.Crosswinds is, in many ways, an experience of the history of our music through the relationship between traditional clarinet and modern digital techniques: the common elements they share, the singularity of their own particular strengths, and the beauty that can be experienced when they collaborate.Patch for live electronics available from https://bitbucket.org/kylevanderburg/crosswinds/downloads/

Published by Na-Mara (A0.1013008). Canberra Bourrée: this tune is one of a number of self-penned folk tunes by the UK based folk duo Na-Mara and is written in the style of a French Bourrée. Written in the key of Dm, Canberra Bourrée can be played on mandolin or on any C clef instrument (violin, ukulele, flute etc), with the guitar chords accompanying the individual player. Performance tips: this is beginner / intermediate level piece and played at a moderate speed. It’s quite nice to make a long pause on the second time bar before going back to the A section, and to make a feature of this, and also to slow it down towards the very end. The guitar accompaniment can be played with broken chords, or arpeggio style. When we play this tune live we play it as the middle tune of a three-part set, starting with our arrangement of the An Dro, and finishing the set with our arrangement of the Galician Muiñeira, Muiñeira de Boal. Na-Mara (Rob Garcia and Paul McNamara) perform this instrumental piece on mandolin or octave mandola, with guitar accompaniment. They have also used it alongside other tunes in workshops as a teaching and learning resource, introducing players to tunes from different parts of the Celtic world.Recordings of this and other tunes on SMP can be found on Na-Mara’s albums ‘Sisters & Brothers’, ‘Navajos & Pirates’ and ‘The Bite’Na-Mara have built an enviable reputation for fine story-telling and musicianship.
