Béla Viktor János Bartók is considered to be one of Hungary’s greatest composers (along with Franz Liszt), and is regarded as one of the most important writers of the 20th century. His music tends to reflect two trends that helped to change the sound of music in the 20th century: the breakdown of diatonic harmony; and a renewed interest in using nationalism as a source for musical inspiration. For this latter trend, Bartók turned to Hungarian folk music and become a key figure in influencing the modern use of indigenous music and techniques. In 1904, whilst at a resort in Hungary, Bartók overheard his nanny, Lidi Dósa, singing Transylvanian folk songs, which sparked a lifelong devotion to folk music. Further influenced by Strauss, Bartók started to write music based on folk songs, including his Romanian Folk Dances (Op. 8a, Sz. 43, BB 56) for piano in 1910, made up of two folk songs. The first of these dances was later orchestrated by the composer for orchestra and named Romanian Dance (Sz. 47, BB 61) and it is this piece that is available here. One Last Bar Then Joe Can Sing (1994) was commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain for the percussion quintet Nexus, and is a reflection on aspects of percussion history, both personal and musical. The members of Nexus are my friends (I played in the Steve Reich Ensemble along with Russ Hartenberger in 1972, the year after Nexus was formed). The piece aimed to demonstrate how a fine percussion ensmeble can be as musically expressive and subtle as, say, a string quartet. The piece starts from the last bar at the end of the second act of my opera Medea, a very short coda for a quintet of untuned percussion instruments during which the curtain falls. In this piece, however, this one apparently innocuous measure is progressively fragmented until it is taken over, little by little, by the addition of tuned percussion instruments. Eventually two metallophones (crotales and songbells) play aria-like material with bows, occasionally joined by the xylophone, and accompanied by marimba and xylophone ostinati. The piece ends with a coda in which phrases are passed from bowed vibraphone to bowed crotales, then to bowed songbells, supported by tremolos on the marimbas. The rare 3-octave songbells that Nexus owns is one of the American instrument maker J. C. Deagan's particularly fine instruments. The piece is effectively a kind of homage to Deagan, the Stradivarius of the tuned percussion world, who collaborated closely with Percy Grainger in the development of tuned percussion music between the wars. The allusions in the title are obvious: the one last bar is the last measure of music from my opera; the song is that of Deagan's songbells. In the case of Joe I wanted to link my father, Joe Bryars (who was a good amateur baritone singer) with Joseph Deagan and his songbells. However, some time after I had written the piece, Nexus's Bob Becker took me to one side and told me (gently) that the initial J in Deagan's name, in fact, stood for JohnGavin BryarsPercussion 1: Crotales (with bow), Chocolo, Mark Tree; Percussion 2I: Song Bells (with bow), Chinese Cymbal, 3 Wood Blocks; Percussion 3: 2 Cymbals, 2 Triangles, Xylophone, Marimba (shared with Marimba II), Vibraphone (with bow); Percussion 4: 2 Cymbals, 2 Gongs, Marimba I (with low F), Maracas; Percussion 5: 2 low Tom-Toms, Marimba II (to low A).

The complete set arranged wind dectet and bass Romanian Folk Dances Sz. 56, BB 68 is a suite of six short piano pieces composed by Béla Bartók in 1915. He later orchestrated it for small ensemble in 1917 as Sz. 68, BB 76. It is based on seven Romanian tunes from Transylvania, originally played on fiddle or shepherd's flute. The original name for the piece was titled Romanian Folk Dances from Hungary but was later changed by Bartók when Transylvania became part of Romania in 1920. It is nowadays available in the 1971 edition which is written with key signatures although Bartók rarely ever used key signatures. This set of dances consists of six movements and, according to the composer, it should take four minutes and three seconds to perform, but most professional pianists take up to five minutes. The list of the movements is as follows (with the original Hungarian title listed first, the most commonly known Romanian title second, and the English translation in parentheses): Bot tánc / Jocul cu bâtă (Stick Dance)The melody of the first movement, according to Bartók, came from the Mezőszabad (present-day Voiniceni) village that was part of Mezőcsávás (present-day Ceuașu de Câmpie) commune which was located in the Maros-Tordaadministrative county within Transylvania, and he first heard it when two gypsy violinists were playing it. Brâul (Sash Dance)The second movement is a typical dance from Romania called Brâul, for which traditionally a sash or a waistband was used. This melody came from Egres (present-day Igriș), in the Banat region. Topogó / Pe loc (In One Spot)The third dance comes also from Egres (Igriș), but its theme is much darker and its melody recreates Middle Eastern instruments, such as the flute.[4] Bucsumà tánc / Buciumeana (Dance from Bucsum)The fourth dance came from Bucsony, Alsó-Fehér County (today Bucium, Alba county in Romania) Román polka / Poarga Românească (Romanian Polka)The fifth dance is an old Romanian dance similar to the Polka and comes from Belényes (present-day Beiuş, in Bihor county), near the border between Hungary and Romania. Aprózó / Mărunțel (Fast Dance)The sixth and last dance is formed by two different melodies: the first one comes from Belényes (present-day Beiuș) and the second one comes from the then named Nyagra (present-day Neagra) village within the Palotailva (present-day Lunca Bradului) commune. It’s very slow, and lasts just over three and a half minutes - be sure not to rush this lovely piece and its haunting descant in the final Verse.The key is just a semitone lower than the original, and two guitars are tuned to 6=D to give a rich deep bass that maximises the sustain that guitars can achieve.Guitar 1 plays the part of the high descant in the original.Guitar 2 is the tune, and if you have more than 4 players, there is an optional divisi part (Guitar 2a) that helps reinforce the beautiful melody.Guitar 3 is arpeggio based, to help the sustain and to ease the counting of the beats.Guitar 4 has thick chords which should be rolled (but not strummed) to add to the majesty of the music.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. It started out as a composition by a Czech composer, got new lyrics and new names in many languages (in Germany, where the Germans claim it as their own, it's called Rosamunde) and became wildly popular across the globe during World War II, after the Andrews Sisters made a hit of it in 1939.This one is scored for two trumpet, horn, tuba and baritone, a more fitting instrument for an Oktoberfest band than a trombone.
