The music reflects and amplifies my own subjective responses to the artworks.The movements are organised in pairs, circling out from a still centre – No Woman, No Cry. The title for this centrepiece comes from Chris Ofili’s moving portrait of Doreen Lawrence, the mother of a teenager murdered in an unprovoked racist attack. As well as this specific reference, the artist intended the painting to be read as a universal portrayal of melancholy, solace, and grief. The two segments flanking No Woman, No Cry complete the central triptych. Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks explores loneliness and isolation, while Grayson Perry’s #Lamentation is a meditation on remembrance and the transience of life. In contrast to the rest of Wynwood Walls, the music here is dark and introspective.I want my time with you is a giant neon sign designed by Tracey Emin for St. Pancras Station, London. Selfie with Sunflowers is an essay written by Julian Barnes about our over-familiarisation with Van Gogh’s iconic sunflower paintings. The music is sentimental, bordering on schmaltz and kitsch. Sunflower Seeds and Infinity Room are a pair of moto perpetuo scherzos inspired by the minimalist installations of Ai Weiwei and Yayoi Kusama respectively. The opening section, Bathers at Asnières, suggests Seurat’s iconic painting, while the finale, Seurat’s Bathers, evokes Howard Hodgkin’s reworking of the Seurat using a blaze of vivid colours.The title of the quintet is borrowed from the Wynwood art district of Miami – an area characterised by the hundreds of colourful street murals which decorate the walls of old warehouses in the neighbourhood. In performance, the artworks can be projected onto a screen behind the ensemble.Wynwood Walls s'appuient sur 9 œuvres d'art dont les titres prêtent leurs noms aux 9 sections connectées du quintette. Turner’s The Sun Setting Through Vapour was my inspiration because of the different layers and zones of interest which influenced my composition’s structure. The central focus of the painting is the setting sun in the central background of the work. The reflection of the sun draws the eye into the foreground and the market scene in the front right zone. This created the first section of my composition, the idea of the sun setting through the vapour before revealing a market scene which then fades back into the atmospheric sun setting through the vapour. The second section moves to the story of the Napoleonic War ships in the middle and backgrounds of the painting using percussion. Reflecting this the section centres around the narrative of a naval battle; the manoeuvring into position and flexing of strength; the pre-battle planning; the calm before and finally the battle itself. The third section draws together two aspects: the sun setting and the prison ship, drawing us from the aftermath of the battle to the journey back to shore showing the juxtaposing emotions of the imagined victorious British (the piccolo) and French prisoners (the cello). Closer to shore the vapour descends and we hear inflections of the market before returning to the sun setting through the vapour with the harbour clock (Tubular Bells) grounding us in real time.

A musical score or lead sheet was intended to be interpreted for style and tempo, and while some of those interpretations may not necessarily have been wrong, quite often they weren't always what the author intended, but face it, it's just plain hard to write music exactly in the way that the song is intended to be sung. Enter the computer age, and the ability for performers to understand that the interval of a note is an absolute time interval which puts the natural rhythm, or beat, of a musical arrangement at about 25% faster than a beat per second, which is why I arrange music to be performed at ~ 80 BPM, which means, approximately 80 beats per minute. That is not etched in stone, but it does represent the comfort zone to which the performer should subscribe when singing or playing a song. Contemporary jazz singers are, in my opinion, therefore obligated to re-arrange the songs that they intend to record, to avoid the embarrassment of getting it wrong. It happens. Timing is of the essence. Many of those old jazz classics are well served with a rewrite for the contemporary artist.The Nearness of You was written in 1938 by Hoagy Carmichael, with lyrics by Ned Washington, and was performed in the 1938 Paramount movie, Romance in the Dark, by Gladys Swarthout of the Metropolitan Opera. It has been recorded numerous times over the years, and it maintains its popularity today. The guitar chording for this arrangement is targeted toward the experienced and more advanced players, but I encourage the experienced intermediate level player to take up the challenge of learning to play this song. It will be a rewarding experience.

Gordon Cherry #5320113. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792665). Here is a description of the Four Psalms for Four Trombones by Jeff Reynolds. Musical settings of The Psalms of David are a staple in the Compline world, and are indeed the musical nut of Compline. I composed these in modes for a choir of men, with countertenors and text, and thought these settings would be a soothing repast for the trombone world; maybe not for the 1st player. The lack of stems and meter is a way to get away from the rhythmic feel of western music and into the lumpy, arhythmic, text driven zone of chant. There are only 3 basic note lengths: a larger white note is a whole note; a smaller white note is a half note surrogate; and a black note is a quarter note. Be not anxious to get to the new phrase. Taking time for breaths is a good thing. Psalm 130 is a Penitential Psalm, with music in the acerbic style of Igor Stravinsky after the 2nd trombone solo from the Russian Easter of Korsakov. Mr. Reynolds has written settings for Psalms 4, 91 Qui habitat, 130 De profundis and 103. The Psalms are appropriate for moderately advanced to intermediate level performers.

A Sextet (1984) was written for the Neighborhood Sax Quartet plus 2 guest saxxists when I was still a member of the Boston composer consortium, Composers in Red Sneakers. The piece however is dedicated to Marilyn Monroe. The sax [sic] symbol of all times!!! It was premiered in Kresge Auditorium at MIT on November 16, 1984, by the YNSQ - Ben Schachter on soprano, Allan Chase on alto, Tom Hall on tenor, Steve Adams on bari - and two guests - Greg Badolato on soprano and George Garzone on tenor.
