Just as Mr. Lu has said: No matter whether you climb to the top of the mountain or not, we are all embraced by it. It is true that we admire it not only for its great majesty and steep scenery, but, more importantly, for the spiritual meaning behind it, from which we learn humility. When visiting the mountain, the composer was moved to be lost and speechless, and soon reminded of the poem by the poet Kuei-Shien Lee, The Invisible Temple, as follows: I stand high, having no fear of seeing very far. It is blurry far away from here, and nothing can’t be seen. I insist on coldness, silencing the world in my inner rock strata. I am independent of the uproarious world of mortals. Those who are frantic come here, the invisible temple. Still frantic, they return to the world, without appreciating anything. With Lee’s consent, the title of the poem was applied to this work, to represent the composer’s feelings of visiting the Yu-shan Mountain. In this work, several songs from the aboriginal Tsou and Bunun tribes are adopted for the large male chorus and orchestra. It comprises three parts: 1. The talk in the night staying at the Inn Paiyun, 2. The Sunrise, and 3. The Worship, which are to be performed attacca (without pause or interruption). P.S. 1. The work was commissioned by Chew’s Culture Foundation, and was composed in 2005-2006. In December 2007, it was premiered by Chun-Chiang Chiu conducting the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra and the Taipei Philharmonic Chorus at the Kaohsiung City Cultural Center and the National Concert Hall in Taipei, respectively. 2. I listened for several minutes and amazingly never grew tired of the old tune. Between the percussive nature of the instrument and the unique intervals the out-of-tune comb robotically produced, I could not help but imagine what the tune would sound like when played by the large, rotating drum found on so many carillons. I remember visiting Belgium and seeing these extremely large automatic-playing drums. They resembled so much, on a larger scale, the music boxes I had been so intrigued by since I was a child. The human desire for and fascination in automatic music has long been a part of our musical tradition. While this dream has long since been achieved, these short etudes celebrate the bond between two past efforts to make this fascination a reality: the music box and the carillon.”Adam Lenhart, 2024Performance Notes These short etudes are written to be practiced and performed on any octave of your instrument. You may find certain etudes are even more effective when displaced, depending on the timbre of the carillon in question. Repeats may be executed indefinitely; upon repeating, you may choose to transpose to one octave higher/lower if desired. Let these short pieces provide a foundation to improvise upon, or as an exercise in ornamentation. After a final repeat or variation, some etudes provide a final bar or chord. Programme Notes: From a young age, I was always interested in castles and history, and have visited many castles in my home country of Wales, which is sometimes called the “castle capital of the worldâ€. At one time Wales had about 600 castles, of which over 100 are still standing, either as ruins or restored buildings. The remainder have been reduced to ditches, mounds and earthworks. Visiting these amazing historically significant buildings has allowed me to reflect on their importance and purpose. In their day they were the centres of thriving communities and it is through their value as the focus of the community, that the three movements have developed their individual characteristics. The first movement depicts a large formidable castle, towering over the neighbouring lands, exuding power, authority and law, complete with noblemen and knights; the second movement describes the pastoral scenes around the castle, and the commoners going about their ordinary lives; the third demonstrates the military function of the castle which was to protect: when coming under siege, the people eventually triumph, the enemy defeated.

Sweet, Sweet Smile is a C&W song composed by Otha Young and Juice Newton introduced by the Carpenters on their 1977 album Passage. The track features drummer Ron Tutt who regularly backed Elvis Presley.Sweet, Sweet Smile is one of the few songs recorded by the Carpenters which was chosen by Karen Carpenter rather than Richard Carpenter. Juice Newton and her bandleader Otha Young had written Sweet, Sweet Smile for Newton herself to record but Newton's label Capitol Records was not interested in the song. Newton's manager, who was a friend of the Carpenters, was playing the demo of Sweet, Sweet Smile at his home while Karen Carpenter was visiting. Karen Carpenter liked the song and brought it to the attention of her brother Richard Carpenter who'd recall: I liked it immediately...now there's one that, to me, should have done better than it did referring to the track's January 1978 release as the third single from Passage. The song was composed in 1954 by Smith as a banjo instrumental he called Feudin' Banjos; it contained riffs from Smith, recorded in 1955 playing a four-string plectrum banjo and accompanied by five-string bluegrass banjo player Don Reno. The composition's first wide-scale airing was on a 1963 television episode of The Andy Griffith Show called Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee, in which it is played by visiting musical family the Darlings (portrayed by The Dillards, a bluegrass group), along with Griffith himself.The song was made famous by the 1972 film Deliverance, which also led to a successful lawsuit by the song's composer, as it was used in the film without Smith's permission. The film version was arranged and recorded by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell, but only credited to Weissberg on a single subsequently issued in December 1972. It went to second place for four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973, behind Roberta Flack's Killing Me Softly with His Song; it topped the adult contemporary chart for two weeks.
