When approaching how to arrange this piece, the biggest challenge was the motor rhythm of the repeated eighth notes constantly present in the string parts. It is also occasionally present in the original bassoon parts, however, and is playable if the piece is taken at a more conservative tempo. Double-tonguing certainly makes it possible at faster speeds, but having an entire ensemble that can do it is an unlikely scenario. Leaving it out completely made for a much less exciting arrangement. As such, I've tried to spread those passages among all the parts so that no one part had to do it for too long a stretch at a time. Also, the option to replace the eighth notes with quarter notes is present in all the parts - that can be done uniformly throughout the ensemble, only for players that need it, or even would be fine if players who can mostly keep up with the tonguing need just a measure or two break. As typical in my large transcriptions, all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi in two parts. I did my best to keep up with the tonguing in the layered recording attached, and, as always, keep in mind that I'm an oboist, and please forgive my inelegant attempt at what is a very standard and challenging bassoon excerpt.

They steel themselves against the onset of what promises to be a dull and dreary piece played by unsmiling people in black suits. My imaginary audience may be pleased to find that this Petit Concert is nothing of the sort. It is actually a rather relaxed piece, combining something of the 18th century Rococo (which was never very serious to begin with) and Steely Dan-influenced Hindemith. But just as a chef will hide the most unlikely ingredients in his sauces and confections, I hope I have concealed these disparate influences in a piece which speaks with its own voice. Here, then, is a short concerto with little if any overt virtuosity; it is offered simple for the enjoyment of players and audience alike. In this it perhaps comes round full circle to composers like François Couperin who preferred to please their listeners rather than stun them.Relaxed the piece may be. To be sure, ranges and techniques are far from extreme and there are plenty of triadic sonorities and almost normal functional harmony here. But there are also moments of jazz-inflected chromaticism and frequent meter changes to contend with. It will take players who can hold their own in a mildly dissonant sound world to pull this off. Careful attention to dynamics, tight ensemble and flawless intonation are a must, but diligent players will be rewarded with an immediate audience-pleaser.A separate harpsichord part is included for players who prefer not to read from the score. Equal temperament and a=440 are assumed for the harpsichord. A two manual instrument is preferred but not absolutely necessary.

The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. This is a collection of the remaining Promenades found throughout the work. All are so short that it seemed wise to bundle them, and it is unlikely you would want to perform any of them unless you were performing the entire piece.

This beautiful villancico with text by Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz and music by Antonio Duran de la Mota, made famous by Ensemble Elyma, was adapted to different texts during the 18th century. Ensemble Elyma recorded it as Fuego, fuego, que el templo se abrasa. This pretty much the same villancico, but some differences, both musical and with the text. The text says Fuego, fuego, que Juan de Dios se abrasa. The other lyrics can be adapted without problems. The original sheet music is in F Major, although the tenor's vocal range is too high to sing comfortably (remember that, in early music, the tessituras are not necessarily identical to what we now understand as alto, tenor, etc. It is likely that the tenor was sung by a female voice). Anyway, in this file is also included the piece transposed a minor third below, that is, in D Major.

The first of its kind, this is a genuinely playable piano/vocal reduction of Largo al factotum,†the show-stopping first aria from Gioachino Rossini’s famous opera Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville). Most reductions of this aria pose a physical hazard to audition and other collaborative pianists who risk injury by trying to grab every fast repeated note and chord in this extremely long aria, nor do the repeated notes tend to come out properly or sound right on pianos compared to the string instruments for which they were written. With this reduction—which was specifically created to be more ergonomic at the piano and safer to get through on long audition-playing days—pianists may now enjoy playing this aria comfortably, without risking strain/injury. However, it’ll still be a tour de force for the baritone!Note that this score does not make any cuts to the aria; therefore, it is also suitable for recital settings without time limits.All Accessible Accompaniments, including this one, boast several unique features:1. No reduction ever requires stretches of over an octave, not including bass notes meant to be held or “fudged†with the pedal (though octaves may also contain chord tones within them). This reduces the amount of rearranging that smaller-handed pianists must already do. Obviously, further reworkings are to be expected and pianists should feel free to add to or modify what I’ve provided.2. I’ve included less essential, but potentially desirable additional voices/passages in cue-size noteheads so that pianists can easily see them, but know that they are not necessary in a “sink or swim†accompanying situation. Presenting less essential material in cue-size noteheads also reduces visual clutter on the page. 3. In addition to the composer’s markings, when needed, I have included hints on particular notes to bring out when the singer is likely to need them as a pitch anchor or when it is not obvious which line should be brought out within the texture.4. All page turns have been carefully selected so as to result in the least possible disruption to the pianist when possible. 5. When known, I’ve noted alternate cuts that singers might like to take within certain arias. 6. In some cases I’ve modernized spelling conventions for easier readability (for example, by replacing “߆with “ss†in German arias) and occasionally I've enharmonically respelled brief passages for greater clarity. I’ve also replaced some text “cresc.†and “dim.†markings with hairpins, which are easier to see in high-pressure sight-reading situations. Instrumentation:FluteClarinet in BbHorn in FViolinViolaCelloDoiuble bassSeptet, opus 77 … “Variations on a Shaker Tune†was commissioned by Mark Ludwig for his educational series in the Western Berkshires of Massachusetts.  When he approached me about writing a “theme and variations†work for the purpose of illustrating musical form, texture and orchestration to a young audience, I thought what better thing to do than to use as a theme a Shaker hymn from near Hancock Shaker Village.  As it turns out Deborah Leah Rentz, a mezzo-soprano who is Mark’s assistant at the TerezÃn Music Foundation, has been researching into and transcribing from a Shaker Hymnal, ca. 1850, created and compiled for the Hancock Shaker Village.  (Deborah’s project is sponsored by the Hancock Shaker Village and the Richmond Performing Series.)   So I asked her to put on a DAT tape (those were the days before CDs or digital distribution… ) a number of these hymns for me.  I immediately fell in love with the very first one on the tape, “Grateful Remembrance.† It had a soulful, melancholic core; an almost “bluesy†feeling to it.  In this performance, Deborah will sing the hymn a cappella at the beginning.   Then, the seven variations will follow.I. Grateful Remembrance … An instrumental version of the hymn.II. Grateful Chanting … Featuring the B-flat clarinet in a pentatonic “chant†setting.III. Grateful Funk … The “bluesiness†of the hymn is transformed into a funk riff.IV. Tango Remembered … A four-note fragment from the hymn is transformed into a sultry tango.V. Sambinha agradecida … The yearning “flat 6th†in the hymn is transformed into a samba Carmen Miranda would’ve have liked.VI. Canonized Remembrance … The hymn is treated to a canonic transfiguration.VII. Grateful Groove … The pentatonic nature of the hymn is spun out in an Afro-cuban dazzle dazzle finale!
