Around the Cauldron was inspired by the three witches from Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. With a nod to multi-movement pieces such as Schumann's Scenes From Childhood and Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, Around the Cauldron is comprised of seven short scenes, each of which evokes a mood that resonates with an image of three witches gathered around a cauldron in a dark forest, muttering spells, and adding selected creatures to a bubbling stew. The movements carry individual titles: In Dusk, Pounce, Transmutation, Boiling, Witches Waltz, Newts’ Lament, and Sacrificial. Most of the melodies in the piece were tailored to fit lines from the original Shakespearean text and were also arranged as songs for a production of Macbeth at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Thus, the main theme sets the play’s immortal opening words: Fair is foul and foul is fair / Hover through the fog and filthy air. Honoring the three witches, the piece reflects the number three in its rhythms, which highlight groups of three beats; in its themes, which are constructed of three phrases; and in its instrumentation, which suggests that each instrument represents a different witch. Around the Cauldron was commissioned by Concert Artists Guild with support from the Adele and John Gray Endowment Fund for Lysander Piano Trio, which is fittingly named after another Shakespearean character.

The title Three Sacred Songs: was given to these pieces rather than the more usual terms anthem or motet because of the strongly secular presence in the texts. The songs were written over a period of some eighteen months. The Shepherd Lad was finished on February 29, 2008. The Round Day and Magdalene’s Song were completed in Brooklyn on June 11, 2009, the music having been originally sketched-out on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2008, at Putnam Valley, New York. In the first song, The Round Day, the singer hears the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sings to the glory of God throughout the day. The text was written on June 7, 2008. In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.†The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).

Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889417). for the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry,Moon Over The Rising Sun was written very early in the morning while the night fades away giving birth to a sun rise. Conceived for a mixed ensemble of nine to 10 performers. 2 Flutes, Clarinet, Horn, guitar, Harp, Violin, Viola, 1 Timpanist, 1 or 2 Percussionists. The piece has an intime atmosphere very common in chamber music. Very easy to perform and very flexible, it is ideal for schools or when various kinds of mixed ensembles are taking place. With very few effort from the players, it has a large effect on the audience. As I said the piece is very flexible, for exemple the shakuhachi flute can be replaced by a soprano recorder or any other kind of flute with a similar register. A piano could eventually replace the harp. Due to a certain Tutti caracter on the string section, more violins, violas and cellos would easily join the group. One Cello or Double Bass „Pizzicato could reenforce the left hand on the harp part. Other wise and when possible, it should be performed as written. I also have added some interpretation symbols like fortes and pianos but only as a personal suggestion for an interpretation. Of course the artists must decide how they prefer to perform the piece and should have the last word on their performances. The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. This is the first time that this version is published in Sheet Music Plus or anywhere else! This piece was inspired by some aspects of western, eastern, African and american cultures. The list of inspiring human phenomena and achievement within art and music never find an end. There is so much to learn! For now let the World play music. Music is the ultimate Universal language. Imagine we all playing music with each other. The World full of music schools and instruments instead of military camps and weapons. Millions of beautiful people with music instruments in their hands playing music with each other all around the World. Our war lords would start opening music shops for a change. Published in February 2024, this delightful SATBB recorder quintet brings a refreshing new edition to ensemble repertoire lists. The three movement work (7'20 long total duration) was inspired by the mighty oak tree (Derwen in Welsh) and journeys on an exploration through roots, branches and leaves.Derwen is aimed at confident intermediate to advanced ensembles due to (sometimes) frequently changing time signatures and some more technically challenging phrases but also brings with it beautiful harmonies and changing moods.A note from the composer: The title of this piece, Derwen, is the Welsh word for an oak tree. Trees are traditional symbols of physical and spiritual nourishment or growth, with the oak in particular representing strength and longevity. This seemed to be a fitting inspiration for a commission born out of a long-standing musical collaboration and friendship, and so became the starting point for the composition. The piece begins with a simple melody in the lower voices (the ‘roots’) and gradually builds up the texture. The second movement explores the idea of intertwining branches, reaching higher and higher towards the sky. Finally, an off-balance rhythm in the final movement brings to mind the swirling and falling of leaves, eventually combining with elements from the first two movements to bring the piece full circle.Please view several samples and a full Youtube video (of the complete Sonata) by scrolling through the images. The Revelations of Divine Love (Metaphors from Sea and Sky) (2009), an oratorio for soprano,baritone, chorus, and chamber orchestra (0000.1100.1perc.strings), was commissioned for and is dedicated to the choir ofRoyal Holloway, University of London and Rupert Gough, director of choral music.The texts of the work are adapted primarily from the writings of Julian of Norwich (c. 1342–1416).Julian is best-known for her Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love (c. 1393), believed to be the first Englishlanguagebook written by a woman. Considered one of the most significant English mystics of alltime, Julian lived a reclusive life as an anchoress at the Church of St. Julian in Norwich, England (hertrue name is unknown). Regarded even during her lifetime as a spiritual authority, her optimisticvisions have been very influential in the years that have followed.Texts are also drawn from three additional sources: an excerpt from the Book of Margery Kempe(translated by Christopher M. Brunelle), two poems by English poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674),and a poem by the American writer Elizabeth Kirschner (b. 1955).The primary concept underlying this oratorio is the presence of two distinct discourses. One is asequence taken from Julian’s religious visions. The other is a sonic geography of Nantucket Island(located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States). This interconnected conceptwas inspired by the writings of the great Scottish poet George Mackay Brown (1921–1996). Livinghis entire life on Scotland’s Orkney Islands, Mackay Brown consistently explored the transpositionof religious imagery and events to his native landscape. (For example, the poem Apple-Basket, Apple-Blossom takes the story and structure of the Stations of the Cross, and maps them onto imagery ofdistinctly Orcadian character.)The landscape of Nantucket Island has been the driving force behind a large number of mycompositions for many years. Each movement of the work thus has two parallel purposes:a setting of the visionary words, and a portrayal of a specific place in Nantucket’s geography. Muchof the music was planned in the actual locations. Since the soloists and choir must, by necessity, singthe words, a great deal of the landscape is left to the orchestra. Thus, the orchestra’s role issubstantially greater than simply accompaniment.Because of these two discourses, the oratorio is not intended as comprehensive working out of allaspects of Julian’s visions, nor does it use her own structure and sequence. The style of these songs was inspired by and (without slavish imitation) emulates the master composers of the Ars Nova period (14th century CE) such as Machaut, Landini and Ciconia. The text is Buddhist, from the Pali Canon or the collection of teachings of early Buddhism. The words are mainly from the Buddha Shakyamuni (or Gotama), who lived ca. 563-483 BCE. A full translation of the lyrics appears at the end of the score. The music is chiefly modal/tonal throughout.

The beginning of Schubert’s enigmatic funeral march Franz Schuberts Begräbnis- Feyer [Franz Schubert’s funeral ceremony] for nine winds, written when Schubert was only 16, wanders like a phantom as a tonal shadow through the score. The title Three Sacred Songs: was given to these pieces rather than the more usual terms anthem or motet because of the strongly secular presence in the texts. The songs were written over a period of some eighteen months. The Shepherd Lad was finished on February 29, 2008. The Round Day and Magdalene’s Song were completed in Brooklyn on June 11, 2009, the music having been originally sketched-out on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2008, at Putnam Valley, New York. In the first song, The Round Day, the singer hears the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sings to the glory of God throughout the day. The text was written on June 7, 2008. In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.†The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).

Stile Antico: On a theme of Palestrina (2012) for 5-voice cello ensemble The title Stile Antico refers a style of musical composition from the 16th century which was often employed in church music, because it allowed the words (sacred text) of each singer to be clearly heard. This pre-classical polyphony was many-voiced and without instrumental accompaniment. Inspired by a theme from a mass by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1525 – 1594) ‘Praestet hoc nati genitor, I present a modern cello ensemble rendition of this ‘ancient style.’ Most conspicuous of the work’s attributes is the use of time. Rather than moving the musical ideas and themes towards a goal or through structural development and a sense of progress, the music (and time) unfolds perhaps as the natural swing of a pendulum; neither clinging to a past, nor anticipating a future. The listener beholds one moment continuously being reshaped through sound. Also, the concepts of melody and harmony as we assume them today are blurred. Of the five players, no one has the melody, no one has the harmony, yet together the ensemble combines to create a continuous flux of melodic-harmony (or harmonic-melody). This idea is of another type of ‘stile antico.’ Within the ideas of alchemy, which richly influenced the music of the 16th century and beyond, exists the concept that one plus one equals three. That is, two objects also create a ‘between-ness.’ So too with musical voices; the combination of two voices creates a new between-ness. Composed in just three weeks in 1899, Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) is a string sextet in one movement by Arnold Schoenberg. Whilst known better for tone rows, his dodecaphonic music and the Second Viennese School, Schoenberg was a master of harmony (writing a number of books on the subject) and, in his early life, was inspired by the music of Brahms and Wagner. This is his best-known tonal work. Its description as a tone poem is not surprising given it takes its inspiration from Richard Dehmel’s poem of the same name, as well as Schoenberg’s strong feelings towards his future wife, Mathilde Zemlinsky, sister of his teacher, Alexander von Zemlinsky.The work is said to have five sections, one for each of the stanzas in the poem. The poem, from 1896, describes a man and woman walking through a dark forest on a moonlit night. The woman shares a secret with him, that she is pregnant but not with his child. The man reflects upon this before warmly accepting (and forgiving) the news.The work premiered on 18 March 1902 in the Vienna Musikverein by the Rosé Quartet. As was normal at the time, Schoenberg produced a string orchestra version that was premiered on 29 November 1916 in Prague, conducted by Zemlinsky, which was later revised in 1943 to better support the soloists, also adding more articulation/accents and tempo markings.Whilst the piece was controversial at the time, both musically and due to the poem’s “inappropriate” subject matter, Richard Dehmel himself was impressed, writing “I had intended to follow the motives of my text in your composition, but soon forgot to do so, I was so enthralled by the music.”This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The title of this piece is a blessing, may the music be a blessing to you.It is originally written for a fairly large ensemble. There is enoughdoubling to adapt for a variety of instrumentations. It features solos for3 different parts. The primary countermelody is the bass line played bythe low horns at letter A and the main melody is introduced by the 1sthorn at letter B. The piece works most easily with 5-6 percussionistsbut may be done with as few as 3 by omitting the xylophone and havingthe same person cover the marimba and timpani parts.

It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. The poet, Bethany Swann, listened to his music and through that experience was able to create the lyrics that so perfectly flow in the songs – an impressive achievement. The nine-movement song cycle begins with In Memoriam, the most “pop music†sounding of the songs, with a simple lyrical line. Roses Through Barbed Wire follows – it is more aggressive and percussive with an active accompaniment to the voice. The third piece of the cycle, The Somnambulist, is in two parts: the first with long melodic lines over a minimalist accompaniment; the second, more chordal and lyrically active. The Struggle shows influences of “Americana†and has a purely instrumental middle section. The midway point of the cycle, Stained Glass, makes use of glowing chords in various modes. The sixth song is A Return, which contains thick textures and chordal accompaniment in support of the vocal part. Song of Returns introduces a slower pace and is imagined as an “impressionistic cowboy song†– if such a thing were to exist! The penultimate movement, Light Sources is a multi-part song having an ethereal middle section and an explosive instrumental ending. The cycle concludes with Northern Boundaries, which includes a hymn-inspired section at the end.

The composer's description of this fascinating, expressive and unique work: I wrote this piece after being inspired by the poem 'Colours' by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, an older contemporary poet who was of Russian heritage [recently deceased]. This coincided - of course - with the loss of my 'heart's desire'. I wrote one melodic note for each syllable of the English translation of the text. I came up with the melody in the left hand of the piano with right hand playing chords/lines above it. I re-wrote the chordal parts for the guitar [my true instrument] with the idea of a low voice singing the words below the guitar part. It seems the melody was not singable! However, I did not want to change it- I thought the melody was exactly as it should be. This work is about 3 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

When we first begandiscussing the idea of a new chamber euphonium concerto, Matthew specifically requested apiece connected to folk music. In recent years, he has been interested in taking theeuphonium into folk music contexts in which it is not normally found. Thus, the idea behindthis work became that of creating a concert piece connected to folk traditions.Although this work is heavily connected to folk music, it does not quote or use any actualfolk tunes or material directly. For each of the three movements, I began by composing anoriginal folk tune within that national style. Each movement of the work is then anarrangement in my own musical style of my original folk tune. The formal and harmoniclanguage is simple, direct, and uncluttered throughout, as is appropriate for folk music.The first movement, Highland Ballad (Scotland), begins and ends with lyrical music. Themiddle sections contain settings of the basic melody -- first presented over a bagpipe-likedrone (with interjections) and then in a full harmonization.The second movement, Ceremonial (Nigeria), combines a harmonic refrain along with asimple melody in the Nigerian/Yoruban folk style. As the movement progresses, theeuphonium plays the role of a song-leader, adding increasingly impassioned countermelodiesand textures over the basic refrains.The third movement, Circle Dance (America), is jubilant -- in the vein of the folk songs ofthe Shakers. A basic rondo structure alternates the principal melody with contrastingexcursions.
