Published by David McKeown (A0.594248). Joy to the World is a much-loved Christmas carol. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Swing style for two Cellos. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.The lyrics of Joy to the World were composed by Isaac Watts in 1719, while the most popular melody associated with the carol was composed by Lowell Mason in 1843. Mason was an admirer of G.F. Handel and the similarity of the melody to parts of the Messiah have been pointed out by many commentators.With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Joy to the World is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz style is a fun, fresh and soulful take on this familiar tune.Joy to the World is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. There is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic style. The melody is played two and a half times, with a short chiming intro and outro. Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, and G. Rossini’s Tancredi, with a theme and variation from The Magic Flute crowning them all. They explore all seven positions, making this the most well-rounded collection of the five (Opp. 52, 58, 156, 159), and a must-have for all cello students. This edition comes in two versions, Original & Collectors’ Edition. The Original version is available in either of the following variants: score only, parts only, and score & parts. It is based on the first edition published by Dotzauer at Breitkopf & Härtel in 1823. The Collector’s Edition adds the new edition of these pieces appeared in the 57 Little Duets compiled by Johannes Klingenberg (1852—1905), and in the early XX century edition by Alwin Schöder (1855—1928).
