S'Feieromd (or sometimes Feierohmd, Feierobnd) was written in 1903 by the german poet Anton Günther. The lyrics are originally written in erzgebirgisch a central-german dialect spoken mainly in the central Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) in Saxony. The traditional song is about Feierabend meaning quitting time or the end of work. The sentimental melody often gets performed at funerals but also works really well as the last piece of a concert. This arrangement helps bringing out the emotional core of the traditional melody with rich and colourful harmonies. It also features a trombone solo at the beginning which brings back the sentimental lonelyness of the original song.

The Ländler is a folk dance in 3/4 time which was popular in Austria, Bavaria, German Switzerland, and Slovenia at the end of the 18th century.It is a partner dance which strongly features hopping and stamping. It might be purely instrumental or have a vocal part, sometimes featuring yodeling.When dance halls became popular in Europe in the 19th century, the Ländler was made quicker and more elegant, and the men shed the hobnail boots which they wore to dance it. Along with a number of other folk dances from Germany and Bohemia, it is thought to have influenced the development of the waltz.Here's a brass quintet version for your enjoyment.

Peet du Toit #5793495. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802564). Sergei Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op. 3, No. 2, is one of the composer's most famous compositions. Part of a set of five piano pieces entitled Morceaux de fantaisie, it is a 62-bar prelude in ternary (ABA) form. It is also known as The Bells of Moscow since the introduction seems to reproduce the Kremlin's most solemn carillon chimes.Its first performance was by the composer on 26 September 1892, at a festival called the Moscow Electrical Exhibition. After this première, a review of the concert singled out the Prelude, noting that it had aroused enthusiasm. From this point on, its popularity grew.This work was one of the first the 19‑year‑old Rachmaninoff composed as a Free Artist, after he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory on 29 May 1892. He performed this new work for the first time at one of the concerts of the Moscow Electrical Exhibition on 26 September 1892. It was printed the following year as the second of five Morceaux de fantaisie (Op. 3), all dedicated to Anton Arensky, his harmony teacher at the Conservatory. Because at the time Russia was not party to the 1886 Berne Convention, Russian publishers did not pay royalties, so the only financial return he ever received for this piece was a 40 ruble (about two months' wage of a factory worker) publishing fee.The prelude has been arranged for orchestra in several versions. Closely related to the Norse tradition of boar sacrifice to their goddess Freyja during the feast of Winter Solstice, this song originated from an urban legend in Queen's College, Oxford back in the 15th century which tells of how a scholar from Queen’s College managed to kill an attacking boar and offered it at dinner.The song was first published in English during the 1520’s in a book entitled Christmase Carolles Newly Emprynted at London in the flete street, which was written by Jan van Wynken de Worde. The Christmas Oratorio (German: Weihnachts-Oratorium), BWV 248, is an oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach intended for performance in church during the Christmas season. It was written for the Christmas season of 1734 and incorporates music from earlier compositions, including three secular cantatas written during 1733 and 1734 and a largely lost church cantata, BWV 248a. The date is confirmed in Bach's autograph manuscript. The next performance was not until 17 December 1857 by the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin under Eduard Grell. The Christmas Oratorio is a particularly sophisticated example of parody music. The author of the text is unknown, although a likely collaborator was Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander).The work belongs to a group of three oratorios written in 1734 and 1735 for major feasts, the other two works being the Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11) and the Easter Oratorio (BWV 249). All three of these oratorios to some degree parody earlier compositions. This tune- and this subsequent arrangement- has some musical references to an instrument sometimes called the Czech bagpipe or Dudy. Thus, there are subtle musical references to this austere instrument with brief bagpipe-like drones and a humorous portion in the middle where the player gets stuck. Ossia notes are included to help with the more challenging portions of the arrangement (particularly the involved tuba part). My apologies for the error-prone recording as my chops were not in good condition for the multi-track effort.

The origins of this lullaby can be traced back to 15th-century England. Pioneers from the British Isles brought it with them to the American Appalachians. Written in three verses, its lyrics tell of four seemingly impossible gifts the singer gave my love. The first verse describes each gift: cherry that has no stone, a chicken that has no bone. a story that has no end and a baby with no cryin'. The second verse poses the riddle: how can such items exist? The third provides the answers: A cherry when it's bloomin', it has no stone. A chicken when it's pippin', it has no bone. The story of I love you, it has no end. A baby when it's sleepin', has no cryin'. This Riddle Song has enjoyed somewhat of a revival since mid-20th century, making appearances in various movies, TV shows and recordings. In 1956, Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis adapted The Riddle Song tune, added an original bridge and created new lyrics; Johnny Mathis recorded it as The Twelfth of Never, giving the haunting melody probably its greatest surge in popularity. This arrangement is in G major and opens with an upbeat introduction. For the first statement of the melody, tempo slows and Trumpets alternate the lead. On the second time through, tempo speeds up slightly and tuba takes the lead. For the third, tempo is back to the opening speed and Horn in F plays the melody. On the fourth time through, Trumpets and Trombone frame the tune in a call-and-response form. In the fifth, Trombone takes the lead. In the sixth and final statement, Horn in F and Trombone play melody at half speed while Trumpets play a fairly complicated counterpoint (at what may seem like double speed!). This, until the last phrase (A baby when it's sleepin'), when the melody switches over to Trumpets and Trombone takes the counterpoint. Trumpet 1 plays its A above the staff a number of times. Tuba's lowest note is its F down below the staff. Otherwise, notes for all instruments are well within normal playing range. Because of the recommended tempo, the countermelody at measures 68-83 could be problematic for Trumpets and Trombone and may require a little extra work. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 42 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. Released as a single on 7 September 1968, it was their second number-one single on the UK Singles Chart and their first US Top 10 hit.The song is about a man who, awaiting his execution in the electric chair, begs the prison chaplain to pass a final message on to his wife. Robin Gibb, who wrote the lyrics, said that the man's crime was the murder of his wife's lover, though the lyrics do not explicitly allude to the identity of the victim. Robin said, This is about a prisoner on Death Row who only has a few hours to live. He wants the prison chaplain to pass on a final message to his wife. There's a certain urgency about it. Myself and Barry wrote it. It's a bit like writing a script. Sometimes you can sit there for three hours with your guitar and nothing will happen. Then in the last ten minutes something will spark. The song was written with Percy Sledge in mind to record it. Sledge did record it in February 1970 but Atlantic did not issue his version in the United States at the time.Barry recalled, In those days, the lyrics were almost pretty well done on the spot. I don't remember the fundamentals on how the lyrics were formed, except that we were writing about a guy on death row. That was it.Robin adds:It was like acting, you see, we said, let's pretend that somebody, his life is on the line, somebody's going to the chair. What would be going through their mind? Let's not make it doom and gloom but sort of an appeal to the person he loves. Because right now that's all he cares about. Regardless of whether he's done a bad thing, he is a human being, and he's sending out this last message. There's someone out there whom he loves. It's a torch song, but within a very sort of theatrical sense. Not sort of abstract, but definitely somebody in a very bad situation whose life is going to end. What would they be saying, you know? This is it: 'Gotta get a message to you, hold on.Revive this hit on your brass instruments and enjoy!
