This arrangement adapted for brass quartet was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, in order to be performed by young music students who want to enter the symphonic music. Besides, it can also be used by professional musicians for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. The transcription remains faithful to the structure, with only one change in tone, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as being used as an activity in ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions. Beethoven's Turkish March (Op. 113) is the 4th movement of the operatic work: The Ruins of Athens, a set of incidental pieces written in 1812 by Ludwig van Beethoven, where the melody was originally written in 1809 as Theme with Six Variations for Piano, Op. 76. The work was written to accompany the play of the same name by August von Kotzebue, for the dedication of a new theater in Pest. Perhaps the best known part of the composition is the Marcia alla turca, In Latin America, this movement became known in Jean-Jacques Perrey's version (who titled it The Elephant never Forgets) since it was used as the opening theme of the successful Mexican TV comedy El Chavo del Ocho. The opening and the turkish march are often performed separately, and the other pieces in this set are not often heard.

Ernesto Lecuona was born 1895 in Cuba.  He began piano lessons at 5 years of age and developed into a virtuoso pianist and internationally celebrated composer.  In 1928 he composed Suite AndalucÃa, a six-movement piano piece portraying the people and places of the Andalusia region of southern Spain.  Two of those pieces eventually achieved tremendous popularity as standalone songs:  #2, “Andalucia†and #6, “Malagueña.† Lecuona had composed both in ¾ time.  Salvador Tutti Camarata reframed “Andalucia†in 4/4, Al Stillman provided English lyrics and the song was given a new title, “The Breeze and I.† Jimmy Dorsey’s big band recorded it in 1940 with the vocal by Bob Eberly.  It was hugely popular, lasting nine weeks on the Billboard magazine chart and peaking at #2.  Fifteen years later, Caterina Valente recorded both “The Breeze and I†and “Malagueña†to great success.    This arrangement opens in A-flat major with Trumpets, Horn and Tuba laying down a Latin beat and the Trombone playing an opening lick.  After the introduction, Trombone and Trumpets take turns with the melody, while Horn and Tuba provide variety and accents.  On the second time through, the key changes to E-flat major and begins with a Trumpets-and-lower-brass fanfare.  The melody repeats, but this time with a different take.  Horn and Trombone take turns with melody and counter melody, then Trumpets take over.  After several cascade effects, the tune reaches its end and Trumpets play an extended version of Trombone’s lick from the introduction.  The group then repeats the final 16 bars of the tune and winds up with an extended ending treatment.  Trombone once again contributes its opening lick, and the arrangement fades away . . . all to a Latin beat.  Enjoy!    Time signature is 2/2 and suggested tempo is 72 BPM, which is maintained all the way through.  There are two instances of a one-bar change to 3/2.  The fanfare at Section C contains a measure and a half of 16th notes.  All notes are well within the normal playing range of the five instruments.    Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds. Jaeger, who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as a mighty hunter before the Lord, Jäger being German for hunter. In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny (Dorabella) that this variation is not really a portrait, but the story of something that happened. Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. And that is what you must do, Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of Nimrod were made to suggest that theme. Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation. This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. A version was also played during the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 and at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The “Nimrod†variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks. An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk in the score by Hans Zimmer. This arrangement for Brass Quintet has been adapted to suit the instrumentalists. The key has changed and this makes it much more playable and more secure.

A little challenging perhaps but instantly recognisable and enjoyable to play. Suitable for intermediate players and above - no fiendishly difficult bits - the main points to watch out for are the tempo changes at bar 28 (where the alto slows the tempo before a slight accelerando) and bars 32 (rall.) and 34 (a new tempo, slightly down on the opening one, is established). These tempo markings are not obligatory and the piece can ebb and flow rubato fashion at these points, if you wish. Also, note the rallentando at the end. In a few places where long sixteenth-note passages occur, breath marks may be needed. These have been deliberately omitted to enable the players to work out what’s best for them. Enjoy yourselves!

Schumann wrote 30 movements for this work, but chose 13 for the final version. The unused movements were later published in Bunte Blätter, Opus 99, and Albumblätter, Opus 124. Discussing the set, Schumann told his wife Clara that the thirty small, droll things were inspired by her comment that he sometimes seemed like a child. In 1840, he described them as more cheerful, gentler, more melodic than his earlier works. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts.In Amor che deggio far, the poet is pleading with his love for constancy. he feels she doesn't love him enough to be his lover forever.This is one of the longer poems set in the seventh book and has a variety of musical forms within it. It begins with an opening statment of the 3 ritornelli that will reappear after each solo, duet, trio or quartet from the soloists. In this way, the composer prepares the listener for what will come and it will therefore be familiar and recognisable in the context of the song.This ia also one of the most demanding songs in the book. It requires a set of four solo singers (Trumpet/Horn/Trombone/Tuba) a pair of obbligato violins (Eb trumpet and Bb trumpet) and a string+ keyboard continuo part (Trumpet/Horn/Euphonium/Tuba) making 10 instruments in all. I had to use an Eb trumpet as the range of the obbligato is quite adventurous for the period and covers some of the clarino range that was to become popular in the High Baroque.At 5 minutes in length, this is a great finisher for either hafl of a concert, especially as Monteverdi has reserved use of all the instruments/voices until the very end, creating a rousing finish.The seventh book continues to be a challenge. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, this song is exquisitely crafted and travels well onto brass.

The second bridge is two measures reminiscent of the opening slow section before it goes into a musical accented war between the instruments. The song, once again, moves into the remembrance of the slow 4 section remaining in the 12/8 time. A three measure battle returns back to the original 12/8 section. The first presentation of the theme is very much in a march style and then breaks into more activity with rhythmic alterations. The second section moves to a new key and is essentially a trombone duet and then adds upper voices to place the piece on an elevated plain. Another modulation moves the musical thought even higher while passing the melodic motifs around to the different voices. The Coda gives a sense of elevation and arrival.
