I borrowed the Slave To The Rhythm LP from the library, put it on the turntable, and thought this is different. This track was the last track on the A-side. As I further listened to the LP I realized that the album used the same song in different genres, format, and keys. You wouldn't know it unless you really listened to the LP. This arrangement, however, is in the original key from her Island Life LP. This song has funk all over it. Grace is a strange character but has a great voice. What made me pick this song is I was searching through youtube to find a song to arrange and I found Grace doing this song live. Again, Grace surprised me. You think female stars today has energy. Simple Gifts ('Tis the Gift to Be Simple), an American Shaker Song, written in 1848 and attributed to Elder Joseph Brackett, Jr. of Alfred, Maine, would be a great addition to any music library. The song was largely unknown outside Shaker communities until Aaron Copland used its melody for the score of Martha Graham's ballet, Appalachian Spring, first performed in 1944. Simple Gifts has now been arranged for a Brass Octet, consisting of 3 Trumpets, 2 French Horns, 2 Trombones and 1 Tuba, by Regis Bookshar. This arrangement features the French Horn on the melody. It is suitable for high school and college students, and, depending upon their ability, even elementary school students. Professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. It could be performed for concerts and church services. The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has often performed it for Weddings. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (13 pages). In addition to this arrangement of Simple Gifts for a Brass Octet, other arrangements of this tune are also available. There are Quintets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. It is marked as Allegro, but that was a vague term in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The recording is at 120bpm, but I have heard it played as widely different as 100bpm and 140bpm.Your choice!

This arrangement adapted for brass quartet was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, in order to be performed by young music students who want to enter the symphonic music. Besides, it can also be used by professional musicians, for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change of key, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as for use in ensemble practice between musicians of different traditions. Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. Beethoven called Symphony No. 7 his most excellent symphony, and a music critic of the time reported, this symphony is the most melodically rich and the most pleasing and comprehensible of all Beethoven's symphonies..

The song tells a folk tale of a cowboy who has a vision of red-eyed, steel-hooved cattle thundering across the sky, being chased by the spirits of damned cowboys. One warns him that if he does not change his ways, he will be doomed to join them, forever trying to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies. The story has been linked with old European myths of the Wild Hunt, in which a supernatural group of hunters passes the narrator in wild pursuit.Stan Jones stated that he had been told the story when he was 12 years old by an old Native American who resided north-east of the Douglas, Arizona border town, a few miles behind D Hill, north of Agua Prieta, Sonora. The Native Americans, possibly Apache, who lived within Cochise County, believed that when souls vacate their physical bodies, they reside as spirits in the sky, resembling ghost riders. He related this story to Wayne Hester, a boyhood friend (later owner of the Douglas Cable Company). As both boys were looking at the clouds, Stan shared what the old Native American had told him, looking in amazement as the cloudy shapes were identified as the ghost riders that years later, would be transposed into lyrics. The melody is based on the song When Johnny Comes Marching Home.

The melodies in this work are based on my unpublished 1979 setting of The expotition to the North Pole from A A Milne's book Now we are six in the Winnie the Pooh series (under the title The Poohratorio). Clearly the Poohratorio itself cannot yet be published due to copyright on the text, but the melodies that it inspired have led to various pieces including a Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (Canticula Ursae Minoris) and various sextets (Songs of a little Bear) including this brass sextet (2 trumpets, 2 trombones and 2 tubas) As suggested in the score, the ideal positioning would be to have all instruments in choir 1 on one side of the stage and all instuments in choir 2 on the other side (ie antiphonally).
