Built on the Rock is a proclamation, through scripturally anchored words and sturdily architected music, of the nature and eternity of the Church whose foundation is Jesus Christ. Long a favorite of Scandinavian Christians and Lutherans, the hymn was written by Danish theologian, cleric, and poet Nicolai F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872), whose criticism of the rationalist philosophy then predominant in the Danish Lutheran church, and his argument for Christianity as a revealed, inspired, and sacramental religion, led to the revitalization of that church. The text was translated to English by Carl Doving (1867-1937).The tune accompanying the text, known as KIRKEN DEN DER ET, was the first hymn tune written by Danish organist, composer, and folk music collector Ludvig Mathias Lindeman (1812-1887). It is an austere, arching, and folk-like melody in the Dorian mode. This arrangement begins with individual voices of the brass quintet, like individual members of the Church, joining together in various combinations and as a whole to introduce the tune. Verses 2 and 3 (measure numbers 33 and 65) present the tune in additional combinations. Verse 4 (measure 101) introduces alternate harmonizations and features a soaring descant in Trumpet 1, powerful unison statements by the entire ensemble, and majestic final chords.©2019 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music. The counterpoint and melodic solos of the first section contrast the lively meter changes and homorhythmic texture of the second section. The work as inspired by and derives its title from the 17th-century French carol Un flambeau. An alternative scoring for full orchestral brass (4.3.3.1) is available. Suitable for concert openers, worship services, and festivals.The score and parts in this edition are arranged to be printed double-sided, with correct page turns. Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. Grafulla (1810–1880) was a composer in the United States during the 19th Century, most noted for martial music for brass bands during the Civil War. Grafulla composed Washington Grays in 1861 for the 8th Regiment, New York State Militia. This work has been called a march masterpiece, a band classic, and the prototype of the concert march. Showing the stylistic influence of both German and Italian marches, the march has a marvelous balance of technique and melody in a continuous flow of musical ideas.

Il concerto per pianoforte e orchestra n. 20, KV 466, è una composizione di Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, completata il 10 febbraio1785 a Vienna.Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart finì di comporre il Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra n. 20 in re minore K 466 il 10 febbraio 1785. Il giorno successivo lo eseguì come solista a Vienna in uno dei suoi concerti per abbonamento che, a quel tempo, avevano molto richiamo. Narra la leggenda che Mozart distribuì agli orchestrali le copie appena trascritte dell'ultimo movimento, al momento stesso di andare in scena. Il concerto si svolse nella sala Mehlgrube e vi parteciparono anche il padre Leopold, appositamente venuto da Salisburgo.L'Andante del secondo tempo è una romanza in 2/2 in forma ABACA. Come fa spesso, qui Mozart gioca di contrasti, espliciti e mascherati. Il primo contrasto è con il carattere del movimento che lo ha preceduto. Nell'inizio del secondo movimento il tema è sereno, apparentemente idilliaco e la tonalitàsolare (Si bemolle maggiore) lo conferma. È il tempo scelto (2/2) che ci fornisce il primo indizio sulle intenzioni dell'autore. A differenza di altri pezzi di grande lirismo il tempo non è un morbido ternario (3/4, 6/8), né un 4/4 con il suo respiro ampio ed il suo alternarsi di battere forti e smussati, ma un marziale 2/2. Il tema principale viene esposto dal solista, ripreso poco dopo dall'orchestra, passa dall'una all'altro con la solita maestria orchestrale mozartiana. Il secondo tema si presenta immediatamente con un salto di ottava ed intervalli ampi si ritrovano in tutto il suo svolgimento. È questo espediente più volte iterato che Mozart usa per costruire tensioni armoniche in crescendo che portano al minore e ad atmosfere giàdistanti dal primo tema. Con grazia sorprendente Mozart torna quindi sul primo tema per la seconda sezione. La terza sezione tematica precipita in minore, e questa volta con una serie di scale forsennate che richiamano alcuni passaggi dello sviluppo del primo movimento. Gli accordi verticali in forte (bisogneràaspettare Beethoven per i primi fortissimo) marcano di brusche fermate e riprese il rincorrersi delle scale. Un arpeggio rallentato e un arabesco riportano al tema principale che chiude questa pagina in un finto clima di riconciliazione, aprendo al frenetico finale.

Composed in 1877 near the bedside of his brother, Fred, during the latter's last illness (died five days later), Arthur Sullivan produced an immediate success. It is his best-known song, although he has composed many other works as a prominent British composer. He admitted that none of his compositions later topped The Lost Chord. It is still performed today at many events, despite its hymn-like style.An early intermediate ensemble should be able to perform it, with as much musicality, insight, phrasing and technical ability as is required by this emotional piece.
