I thought the title was interesting. I fell in love with the chord progressions, the syncopation, and the time signature changes from 4/4 to 3/4 to 6/8. Little did I know until I got to the end of the arrangement that this song takes lyrics from the Heaven's Gate Cult Manifesto. I said, so what. This is really a great tune. The arrangement includes all the spoken parts. In the original key from Porcupine Tree's Lightbulb Sun CD. Duration = 4:46. Sweetwater Brass Press #639202. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1033890). Jaromir Vejvoda, born in 1902 in the Czech city of Zbraslav, was a fiddler and flugelhorn player. As a young man, he began writing music while working as a bartender. In 1927 he composed a particularly rollicking, toe-tapping tune. He persuaded the Czech-American composer Eduard Ingriš to write an arrangement for the piece, and the result was titled "ModÅ™anská polka" (ModÅ™any being the Prague suburb in which it was first performed). In 1934 Václav Zeman added lyrics, and the title changed to "Škoda lásky," Czech for “Wasted Love.” It also became known as “Rosamunde.” The public loved it. It was so successful that Vejvoda was able to quit tending bar and turn full time to music. The polka soon spread to other countries. Lew Brown and Wladimir Timm added English lyrics, and when the Andrews Sisters recorded it in 1939 as “Beer Barrel Polka,” it became one of their biggest hits. During World War II it was the favorite song of the Western Allies and has since been played and recorded by literally dozens of artists. Suggested tempo for this brass quintet “Škoda lásky” is 120 BPM. It opens in C major, changes to F major, then back to C. All five instruments get a chance to shine. There are no really tricky rhythmic patterns, and the notes are, for the most part, within the normal playing range of each instrument. Some possible exceptions: Trombone’s highest notes are F above the staff; it’s lowest, G at the bottom; Tuba’s highest notes are F in the staff; Trumpet 2’s highest are its G at the top of its staff. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (11 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Silent Night is probably the most popular Christmas carol ever written. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single.In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse. Also, in addition to this version for a Brass Octet, consisting of 3 Trumpets, 2 French Horns, 2 Trombones and 1 Tuba, there are other arrangements of Silent Night available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. This arrangement of Silent Night, or in German, Stille Nacht, would be a wonderful addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts, recitals, and, especially, church services. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students and even older musicians. Depending on their ability, younger musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (7 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Silent Night is probably the most popular Christmas carol ever written. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single.In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse. Also, in addition to this version for a Brass Quinet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, there are other arrangements of Silent Night available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. There are Quintets and Octets readily available for purchase. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. The outer sections have strong melodic lines underpinned crisp staccato support providing a solid striding beat. The middle section (which should be played in exactly the same pulse) is more lyrical and legato featuring triplets, but still retains the underpinning crotchet beat, but with a more delicate approach for variation. After a short link passage which features a couple of time signature changes, the main theme returns with a short coda- like few bars to take the piece to a conclusion. The full score is 15 pages and the parts are 3 each. It is 4 mins 15 in length. Ernesto Lecuona was born 1895 in Cuba.  He began piano lessons at 5 years of age and developed into a virtuoso pianist and internationally celebrated composer.  In 1928 he composed Suite AndalucÃa, a six-movement piano piece portraying the people and places of the Andalusia region of southern Spain.  Two of those pieces eventually achieved tremendous popularity as standalone songs:  #2, “Andalucia†and #6, “Malagueña.† Lecuona had composed both in ¾ time.  Salvador Tutti Camarata reframed “Andalucia†in 4/4, Al Stillman provided English lyrics and the song was given a new title, “The Breeze and I.† Jimmy Dorsey’s big band recorded it in 1940 with the vocal by Bob Eberly.  It was hugely popular, lasting nine weeks on the Billboard magazine chart and peaking at #2.  Fifteen years later, Caterina Valente recorded both “The Breeze and I†and “Malagueña†to great success.    This arrangement opens in A-flat major with Trumpets, Horn and Tuba laying down a Latin beat and the Trombone playing an opening lick.  After the introduction, Trombone and Trumpets take turns with the melody, while Horn and Tuba provide variety and accents.  On the second time through, the key changes to E-flat major and begins with a Trumpets-and-lower-brass fanfare.  The melody repeats, but this time with a different take.  Horn and Trombone take turns with melody and counter melody, then Trumpets take over.  After several cascade effects, the tune reaches its end and Trumpets play an extended version of Trombone’s lick from the introduction.  The group then repeats the final 16 bars of the tune and winds up with an extended ending treatment.  Trombone once again contributes its opening lick, and the arrangement fades away . . . all to a Latin beat.  Enjoy!    Time signature is 2/2 and suggested tempo is 72 BPM, which is maintained all the way through.  There are two instances of a one-bar change to 3/2.  The fanfare at Section C contains a measure and a half of 16th notes.  All notes are well within the normal playing range of the five instruments.    Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change of key, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as for use in ensemble practice between musicians of different traditions. Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. Beethoven called Symphony No. 7 his most excellent symphony, and a music critic of the time reported, this symphony is the most melodically rich and the most pleasing and comprehensible of all Beethoven's symphonies..

The custom of sharing the wassail bowl is supposedly of Saxon origin, a drinking ritual dating to the Middle Ages and derived from one of the observances of the Feast of Yule. Today it is associated with Christmas-tide, the twelve days from December 25 through January 5. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767578). These three pieces form a small suite, linked by the idea of ‘pastoral’ or rustic situations and places. The first piece to be written now forms the middle movement, though at first it was the starting point. This is not easy music. It travels through several keys with large numbers of sharps and flats and in places the time signature shifts constantly. The first movement is modal, being based on the mixolydian and dorian modes. I took for this movement the idea of ancient Celts celebrating a victory and dancing and getting drunk around a smoky fire. Their chieftain strikes up a song, accompanied by a double drone. This melody is initially stated on the horn, with just two other instruments providing the accompaniment. At 4 before B, the remaining instruments join in, providing a rhythmic pulse and the melody moves to the Euphonium/Baritone/Trombone. Subtle variations shape the melody anew, leading to letter C. Here the complex overlapping rhythms provide a more dance-like feel to the music. Also, countermelodies start to appear which build the excitement. At letter E, the music becomes louder and the rhythmic pulse more insistent (perhaps they are dancing on the tables?) The mode changes to the more major sounding mixolydian. But from here on in, the revellers are starting to wend their way home, still singing and dancing and they gradually fade into the distance. At letter G, we’re back to three players, but with the trumpet 1 playing a rhythmic melody over the top of the original tune. The second movement is called The Aesthetes. The aesthetic movement was formed in the 19th century, but had been around before that in less formal garb. Their ideal was to emulate the Ancient Greeks and Romans – or at least their perception of what the ancients were like as found in statues, paintings and friezes. They adopted studied poses and were very effete in their mannerisms. Gilbert and Sullivan parodied the aesthetic movement in their operettas – particularly Princess Ida (but also in the Mikado and various others). So, here is a movement with classical lines in the style of a minuet, but in 6/8 rather than ¾ so that it can be more languid. All the melodies are ‘studied’ and ‘formal’ with long, languid notes and rhythms which don’t quite fit to the beat as the aesthetes pose and ponder and languidly look, studied and pale and wan. Because of the long notes in the melody, there’s an almost dream-like quality to the music as if they are seeing through a haze of Wormwood or Absinthe (a favourite drink of the aesthetes when they weren’t high on themselves or opiates). The third and final movement is called The Bohemians. This was also a movement at the end of the 19th Century. Where the aesthetes were ruled by rules, the Bohemians lived by none. They were considered wild and unconventional to say the least. The Bohemians movement owed much to the supposed free life and style of the gypsies and wanderers of Europe. Our piece starts with a gypsy violin style opening, including a cadenza, and then moves into the rapidly time shifting and gyrating gypsy dance. This section is in alternating bars of 5/8 and 6/8 with occasional 11/8 thrown in to keep you off balance. The frantic and frenetic movement continues up to letter F where things calm down a little – but not for long as the intensity increases again from Letter H to the quite sudden ending. This is tuneful yet challenging music which will take a lot of effort, but which will give a lot back in return.

Jaeger, who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as a mighty hunter before the Lord, Jäger being German for hunter. In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny (Dorabella) that this variation is not really a portrait, but the story of something that happened. Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. And that is what you must do, Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of Nimrod were made to suggest that theme. Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation. This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. A version was also played during the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 and at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The “Nimrod†variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks. An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk in the score by Hans Zimmer. This arrangement for Brass Quintet has been adapted to suit the instrumentalists. The key has changed and this makes it much more playable and more secure.

The elderly woman inspired Pollard and she contemplated the story of the potter from Jeremiah 18:3 and, upon her return home that evening, wrote all four stanzas before retiring for the night.
