Suite No. 4 for Brass Quintet (HMV 429) has a dramatic introductory fugue, followed by the four dances that traditionally comprised such suites (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gigue). Georg Friedrich Händel wrote 22 keyboard suites over his lifetime, primarily in his younger years. Not all the suites lend themselves to brass performance, but this one is perfectly suited for such treatment. This arrangement balances the five voices or the quintet evenly, and makes for a wonderful ensemble experience. This edition includes the ornaments, tempos and articulations that convey the spirit of the Baroque. Quintets can follow traditional Baroque terraced dynamics or use a more contemporary approach, as suits their own style. Perfect for concerts, recitals and contest, the difficulty level varies by movement from medium to medium-advanced. Total performance time is 12:54. Member, ASCAP.

Published by G L Harvey (A0.805841). This work is from Grieg's Lyric Pieces originally written for piano in 1891. I must confess that this is one of my favorite piano works to play and I've always thought that it would make a great piece for brass ensemble. This arrangement keeps mostly to the original voicing and style, with the melodic elements flowing mostly between the two trumpets and horn. Performance notes suggest placing the trumpets at opposite ends of the ensemble to make the most of the stereo or antiphonal effect from the melody sweeping back and forth. Players of advanced intermediate standard (about grade 5+ ABRSM) will be able to produce a convincing performance.

The third movement uses syncopated harmonic backgrounds to make passages in two sound as if they could be in three, and passages in three sound as if they might be in two. The middle movement could be described as a hymn, through it written for the most part in 10/8 meter. The lyricism of the music doesn't suffer from these rhythmic complexities. I think it stands out more strongly because of it. Suitable for advanced intermediate players or professionals. Duration: 9 minutes, 50 seconds.
