Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1240389). Spring from the Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi is a masterpiece of Baroque music that captures the essence of the changing season. The composition features three movements, each invoking the sights and sounds of springtime. The first movement is a joyful celebration of the arrival of spring, with its lively melodies and energetic rhythms. The second movement is a pastoral scene, featuring delicate solos, representing the peacefulness of the countryside in spring and even a barking dog. Finally, the third movement depicts a violent thunderstorm, before giving way to an optimistic finale that reflects the renewal and rebirth of nature in spring.This marvelous work of about 9-minutes in length by Mark LaFratta has been arranged and transposed from the original. It is scored for standard Brass Quintet with Trumpets in B-flat and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Air Craft is a slow chorale-like movement with five-four meter and jazz harmony. Humoreske is a lively rondo in six-eight meter. The fourth movement, Ballad of the Bells, is a waltz that features flugelhorn and trombone solos on the melody. The suite ends with Blast of Brass, characterized by a fast tempo, sudden dynamic shifts, and driving rhythms. Brass Tasks was commissioned by the Gustavus Adolphus College and Mankato State University faculty brass quintet and premiered at Gustavus Adolphus College in 1998.Duration 11 minutes. Includes alternate Bass Trombone part for Tuba. Optional Flugelhorn and Cornet in fourth movement. Optional cup and mica mutes.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810733). Cornet solos are an important part of the American Brass tradition. The Southern Cross is one of Clarke's most well known Cornet solos and was written in 1911, dedicated to the Australians and first recorded by the composer with Orchestra the next year  for Victor Records. During 1911, Clarke was the solo Cornetist of the Sousa Band while the band was on a world tour that included visits to South Africa, Tazmania and Australia from March through to August. Below is a photo of the Sousa band from their 1911 tour. Clarke is sitting in the front row 5th in from the right with his moustache and his Cornet on his lap. He assuredly composed this solo to perform on that tour. The Southern Cross is a constellation that is only seen from the southern hemisphere and features the five stars of the Cross from the 1901 design of the Australian flag. This 5-minute virtuosic arrangement by Geoffrey Bergler features not only the Cornet, but a bit of all the other four members of the Brass Quintet. Instrumentation is for: 2 Trumpets in B-flat (Trumpet 1 solo, Trumpet 2 also plays Piccolo) Horn, Trombone Tuba/Bass Trombone The sound track features Mr. Bergler from his student days as Cornet soloist.

Arthur Pryor, famous trombone virtuoso, was solo trombone with the John Philip Sousa band, assitant conductor, and finally leader of his own band. The Blue Bells of Scotland is perhaps the most well known theme and variations of trombone solos. It requires lightning technique, beautiful lyricism, and a large range. I would imagine that all serious trombone players perform this piece at some time in their career.This arrangement is for brass quintet, with the solo trombone accompanied by the other four brass.

The extra parts are not necessary, but are provided if you have extra players such as a Bb Piccolo Trumpet & Bb Trombone/Euphonium in TC.New Orleans-born clarinetist Barney Bigard is likely the originator of this tune, a simple blues riff in the key of C. Since Bigard was a veteran member of Duke Ellington’s Orchestra in 1941, Duke had a slice of the pie, too, and undoubtedly arranged the piece for the orchestra. Yet Duke referred to the number somewhat disparagingly as “one of our more or less trite things.â€The number was introduced in a Soundie short film. These three-minute features, produced to be shown on a jukebox-type player, illustrated the band miming to a pre-recorded performance. Entitled “Jam Session†the Soundie was filmed late in 1941 along with four other Ellington numbers. Duke introduces various band members, who then solo: Ray Nance (violin), Ben Webster (tenor sax), Rex Stewart (cornet), Joe “Tricky Sam†Nanton (trombone), and Sonny Greer (drums). The complete ensemble carries the tune to its finish with composer Bigard (clarinet) providing some improvised upper register piping.“C Jam Blues†was formally recorded under that title in January, 1942, for RCA Victor Records. It continued be a staple of the Ellington repertoire, generally featuring a handful of the soloists in the band.Co-composer Barney Bigard left Duke’s band in June 1942, and after a period of freelancing joined Louis Armstrong’s All-Stars in August, 1947. “C Jam Blues†was one of his nightly features with Satch’s ensemble along with “Tea for Two.†Despite playing the tune hundreds, or perhaps even thousands of times during his tenure with Ellington and Armstrong, he continued to perform it during his freelance years in the 1950s until shortly before his death in 1980.In the late-1950s very simple words were added (“Baby, let’s go down to ‘Duke’s Place’,†etc.) which strangely took a three-member team of writers to assemble: songwriters William Katz and Ruth Roberts and record producer Bob Thiele. Clarinetist Barney Bigard was not included in the composer credits of the song version, although he was a member of Louis Armstrong’s All-Stars when they recorded “Duke’s Place,†featuring Louis on the vocal, with Ellington in 1961.The piece typically features several improvised solos. The final solo continues in the upper register as the entire ensemble comes in and the music grows to a climax. The melody likely originated from the clarinetist Barney Bigard in 1941, but its origin is not perfectly clear.It was also known as Duke’s Place, with lyrics added by Bill Katts, Bob Thiele and Ruth Roberts Western Swing band leader Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys recorded the song sometime between mid-1945 through 1947 as part of the Tiffany Transcriptions.The 10-note occasional riff formed the basis of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band’s novelty song Intro Outro.Need an anthem fast?
