They're a hoot.The song was written in 1924 and performed by a number of contemporary singers and bands. Its a favorite of barbershop quartets. Sammy Nestico did a terrific arrangement for big band.It was even sung by an American Idol contestant. She lost. The Finnish NA arranged for Brass Quintet.There also versions for String & full Orchestra in my two stores.The anthem lyrics were taken from a poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Swedish-speaking poet, called “VÃ¥rt land†(Our Land). The song was first sung in 1848 by a student group and became popular in Scandinavia and many of his patriotic poems, including VÃ¥rt land were used by promoters of Finnish nationalism. The poem was translated into Finnish some decades later, after VÃ¥rt land was well established as a national song, by Paavo Eemil Kajander and became the anthem before 1917 independence. Estonia‘s anthem, adopted 20 years later, has the same melody, however the last few lines do not repeat as they do normally in the Finnish anthem. Interestingly, the anthem has never been officially legislated as the Finnish anthem, but rather is traditionally used as the anthem. As such, there is no standard way to perform the 11-verse anthem, but usually the first and the last verses (as presented here) are sung. There sometimes arises a debate in Finland to change the anthem to Jean Sibelius’ song “Finlandia†(the melody was used in Biafra), a song recognized internationally as a symbol of Finland, but the general opinion seems to be for now to keep the current anthem. It's a beautiful, simple melody with plain accompaniment, here set for brass quintet. This work is by Paul Gerhardt, a little-known contemporary of Bach and Handel. In the third verse, I have added a 'descant part' for trumpet 1. It briefly goes to a high D, twice, but I didn't want to lose the brightness of a baroque sound. Parts are supplied for Trumpet 1 in Eb Trumpet 2 Alternative BbTrumpet for part 1, French Horn Trombone Tuba additional parts for Tenor Horn and Treble clef trombone & Eb Bass.

Here's a chirpy little song from Rodgers & Hammerstein's 1949 production of South Pacific, also mildly mashed up with another song, Bali Hai, from the same production. Lots of covers, from Ella Fitzgerald to a Brit punker who called himself Captain Sensible. (He was sensible enough to spend two weeks at the top of the UK singles list with his version in 1982.)This song draws some criticism from the politically correct for its pidgin English lyric (it's sung by a Polynesian woman in the musical). This song is from the 1927 Broadway musical Showboat, music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein (before his more celebrated partnership with Richard Rodgers). It was most famously performed by Paul Robeson in a 1931 film version of the play, (It was remade in 1951 with Ava Gardner playing a mulatta singer in a part that would have gone to Lena Horne had the producers not feared the wrath of Southern moviegoers.) The story includes exposition of the plight of African-Americans in the South of the Gilded Age; as a result, its content (including the lyrics of this song) were altered to accommodate racist audiences. Possibly dating from the Middle Ages, this English folk tune was first published with secular lyrics in English County Songs, an anthology compiled in 1893. It was first introduced as a hymn tune in The English Hymnal of 1906 set to the words of Horatius Bonar’s “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say.†It is also commonly sung to Louis Benson’s Christmas carol O Sing a Song of Bethlehem and Fred Pratt Green's Passion hymn To Mock Your Reign, O Dearest Lord. The tune is named for the English town of Kingsfold. Grade 3+ - Duration 2:40.
