The 'Minuet Gothique' is the second movement from Leon Boellman's 'Suite Gothique' Opus 25 composed in 1895 for the Organ.The Minuet opens quietly stating the main themes which it develops through dynamically contrasting sections becoming increasingly modal in its feel. The middle section has a rising broken chord theme which is developed through new keys. Gradually ideas from the opening minuet are quietly introduced into the music like distant echos. Eventually the opening Minuet return in all its stately elegance to close the movement.This music needs good focus on dynamic control and articulation both in the ensemble sections and the solo portions. The quiet 'echo' sections need to keep the same energy in their forward movement without diminishing the tempo or relaxing the musical style.

I wanted to challenge myself with these various styles while infusing the quirkiness of Thomas into the heart of the piece.I. HipThis summer I was able to pass through New York City on my way to a graduate school audition. On the train ride there I ended up next to a kid who was grooving to music I could hear snippets of through his headphones. This movement reflects characteristics of the sounds I heard on my way into the city.II. One for the lovebirds…It’s time to cuddle up next to your partner and take a trip down memory lane. This movement is an ode to the slow songs one may have experienced from a dance in the 1950’s.III. SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. It is propitious that I elucidated an exposition featuring a Bach cello suite with motives from the Brahms Requiem in fugal counterpoint set against themes by Mahler.V. JigA trumpet player I was performing with was warming up before a concert and cascading a peculiar series of long tones in to the hall. American Cole Porter wrote it in 1935 while on a South Pacific cruise between Indonesia and Fiji aboard a British liner. Its roots are in a Latin dance from the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. So it's somewhere between a minuet and a samba. The name of the dance, beguine, is Creole (probably pejorative) for white woman. The song was first performed in a Broadway musical called Jubilee. It didn't get much traction until Artie Shaw recorded it with his big band, in a purely swing mode, in 1938; it became the 3rd best-selling recording of the year and set off a new dance craze. Check out the drummer in the YouTube video of Shaw's band performing the song, with special attention to the drummer. It's a young and relatively quite subdued Buddy Rich. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, sticks pretty close to a Latin feel except for a swing break in the middle.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help. This delightful minuet written by Mozart in 1791 perfectly captures the fun of a traditional sleigh ride. It makes a great addition to any Christmas or winter seasonal concert. To help brass players achieve the delicate touch required, this arrangement is transposed from the original C Major to Bb Major. As a result, the 1st trumpet part lies very well on Eb trumpet. An alternative part for piccolo trumpet in Bb is provided. There is also an optional part for sleigh bells; bring along an auxiliary percussionist, or ask an audience member to volunteer! Performance time is approx. 3 minutes.

Four Directional Fanfares for Brass Quintet and optional tympani) was arranged and compiled in 2020 expressly for the Spanish Brass. Each fanfare is named after the four directions of the compass with each having a different duration. I. North (70 seconds), II. South (50 seconds), III. East (20 seconds) and IV. West (2 Minuets and 30 seconds).
An optional timpani part has been added in the score and may be used to enhance the sound in ceremonial situations.
The composer has played and conducted in many brass ensembles over the years as well as composing many fanfares of different lengths to suit the occasion. A brass ensemble can always use new fanfares. These fanfares were recorded by the Spanish Brass in 2020 on the CD “Music for Brass Quintet by Gregory Fritze” on the Spanish Brass label. These fanfares are also on YouTube and Soundcloud.
