Isham Edgar Jones certainly kept busy. By age 26 the Chicago tenor saxophonist led his own dance band, and it was one of the most popular of the 1920s. But he also found time to write melodies for a whole raft of popular songs. Twenty-one Isham Jones Orchestra recordings of his compositions peaked in the top ten most popular, and eight of those made it to the number one spot. One was It Had to Be You, with words by Gus Kahn.    Although written in 1924, It Had to Be You defies the passage of time, still sounding fresh and contemporary. It remains popular and has evolved into a jazz standard.    This brass quintet version retains the original key of G Major. It opens with a suggested tempo of 104 BPM and a nine-measure introduction that combines figures and phrases from both verse and chorus. At rehearsal letter A, Trumpet 1 begins the melody of the familiar chorus, accompanied by Tuba and Horn in F. Trumpet 2 quickly joins and the melody changes to an upper brass trio. The melody then passes to Trombone, back to the trio, to Tuba and then to Horn in F. The section winds up with the original Trumpet-Horn-Tuba combination.    The seldom-heard verse begins at rehearsal letter C and takes the form of a sort of call-and-response between upper and lower brass. As the section nears its end, tempo slows to a suggested 80 BPM and Trombone begins to take over.    Rehearsal letter D marks the beginning of the chorus’ final time through, and here it is mostly Trombone handling the melody in quasi-Dixieland fashion. The upper brass trio and Tuba both help out, but, for the most part, it is Trombone all the way to the end. (Although, a good time is had by all!)    Performance time is about three minutes, fifty seconds. All notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument with the following exceptions: (1) Trumpet 1 has one or two A-above-its-staff notes, and (2) in the wrap-up near the end, Trombone has the option of playing a short phrase either (a) within its register or (b) higher, including a G above the staff.    The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

As he composed this short fanfare, the octaves in the tuba and trombone conjured images of a solid foundation for the upper brass to build on. The imagery of a granite monolith powerfully provided a suitable title. He pictured himself back in the mountains of his youth, standing on seemingly eternal ground that even an earthquake would have difficulty cracking. The grandeur of that feeling of security and connection to something safe and firm is hopefully reflected in the power of the strong notes of this brief fanfare. Pictured on the cover is “Devil’s Tower†located in Wyoming. Although not in Utah, this monolith is a dramatic specimen, worthy of the intended musical imagery of this fanfare. The piece was composed for the student brass quintet at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The premiere performance opened their exciting concert on December 1, 2010. It has since been performed by various brass quintets throughout the United States, including universities and military ensembles.

Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158388). My wife’s from-scratch cinnamon rolls are famous throughout our community—especially among our children’s circle of friends. While enjoying a socially-distanced church service at home on Easter Sunday, there was a batch of those butterfly-inducing cinnamon rolls baking in the new oven. They filled the home with an exquisite aromatic delight. Then the magic motif chimed: “The food is done!†I happened to have my composition notebook with me, and the little four-note tune inspired this composition. It just naturally took me in some happy musical directions, and within a minute or two, the melodic content, replete with fun-filled, muted second-trumpet echoes, was scrawled down. The next day, the music was entered into the computer. It is interesting that I gave the horn the cliché off-beats that all hornists know and love so well. Funny, I usually pride myself on writing for horn as an equal musical instrument; however, this fun, happy melody just demanded an “um-pah†accompaniment. Hopefully there is enough variety to keep the part fun to play. It helps that the piece is only two minutes and something long. The transition into the B section almost wrote itself, modulating to the relative minor. There I paused briefly, wondering how to treat a minor section in such an exuberant piece. Oh, but inspiration continued to flow, and I resumed writing in earnest with a mischievous smile! This section beautifully portrays a naughty, sneaky kid tiptoeing into the kitchen for another cinnamon roll—forbidden until after dinner! The listener can hear the kid’s nervous fluttering heart, and moments of pulling his hand back in startled impishness, and even shuddering as he looks fearfully over his shoulder. At the end of the B section, he gets caught! Witnessing that low-hanging head and puppy dog eyes, mommy finds that she can’t scold the lad too severely. “After dinner, little one…†she reprimands with an understanding grin. The jubilant melody returns to round out the work’s ternary ABA form, though this time with a very sticky Ives-esque climax, reminiscent of a gooey cinnamon roll mess. Too enjoyable to be bothered by prospects of cleaning up, the music shrugs it off with flippant ragtime syncopations, and ends with the “hic-burp†of a very satisfied tummy.

Consider the CM tunes, “Amazing Grace†and “O Little Town of Bethlehem,†for example — both very different from the tune commonly associated with Watts’ text today.That tune was written, or at least arranged, by the American hymn-writer and music educator Lowell Mason (1792-1872) and published in The National Psalmist (Boston, 1848). Mvt.3 Rex tremundae summary A descending melody composed of dotted notes is played by to announce the Rex tremendae majestatis (King of tremendous majesty, i.e., God), who is called by powerful cries on the syllable Rex during the pauses. For a surprising effect, the Rex syllables fall on the second beats of the measures, even though this is the weak beat. The melodies adoptthe dotted rhythm, forming what Wolff calls baroque music's form of topos of the homage to the sovereign,or, more simply put, that this musical style is a standard form of salute to royalty, or, in this case, divinity. This movement consists of only 22 measures, but this short stretch is rich in variation: homophonic writing and contrapuntal passages alternate many times and finish on a quasi-unaccompanied choral cadence, landing on an open D chord (as seen previously in the Kyrie). Excellent fun for eery player.

Arranged standard brass quintet Mozart's textual inspiration is apparent in the Tuba mirum (Hark, the trumpet) movement, which is introduced with a sequence of three notes in arpeggio, played in B♠major by a solo tenor trombone, unaccompanied, in accordance with the usual German translation of the Latin tuba, Posaune (trombone). Two measures later, the bass soloist enters, imitating the same theme. At m. 7, there is a fermata, the only point in all the work at which a solo cadence occurs. The final quarter notes of the bass soloist herald the arrival of the tenor, followed by the alto and soprano in dramatic fashion. On the text Cum vix justus sit securus (When only barely may the just one be secure), there is a switch to a homophonic segment sung by the quartet at the same time, articulating, without accompaniment, the cum and vix on the strong (1st and 3rd), then on the weak (2nd and 4th) beats, with the violins and continuo responding each time; this interruption (which one may interpret as the interruption preceding the Last Judgment) is heard sotto voce, forte and then piano to bring the movement finally into a crescendo into a perfect cadence. My arrangement gives the trombone part to the horn, and the vocal entries are given to the trombone, horn and two trumpets. . Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). Transposed from A minor down to G minor to suit brass instrumentation The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. This is my arrangement of No.5 Confutatis (From the accursed).It begins with a rhythmic and dynamic sequence of strong contrasts and surprising harmonic turns on tuba and horn the tenors and basses (Trumpets and trombone) burst into a forte vision of the infernal, on a dotted rhythm. The accompaniment then ceases , and trumpet 1 and tbn enter softly and sotto voce, (Voca me cum benedictis ()Call upon me with the blessed) with an arpeggiated accompaniment on horn and trumpet 2. Finally, in the following stanza (Oro supplex et acclinis), there is a striking modulation from G minor to Gb minor. This music suits the brass quintet. Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). It is made up of the following pieces I have arrangements of all of them, for varying types of ensemble * Dies irae * Tuba mirum * Rex tremendae * Recordare * Confutatis * Lacrymosa. I have also arranged Mozarts Motet “Ave Verum Corpus†K618.
