Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1405315 By Hank Williams. By Hank Williams. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Country. 26 pages. Peet du Toit #988363. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1405315). Jambalaya (On the Bayou) is a song written and recorded by American country music singer Hank Williams that was first released in July 1952. Named for a Creole and Cajun dish, jambalaya, it spawned numerous cover versions and has since achieved popularity in several different music genres.Since the original melody of the song was from Grand Texas, the song is a staple of Cajun culture. However, although Williams kept a Louisiana theme, the song is not a true cajun song, which helped the song gain widespread popularity:Ethnic music is usually unpalatable for a mass market unless it is diluted in some way (Harry Belafonte's calypsos, Paul Simon's Graceland… the list is endless). The broader audience related to 'Jambalaya' in a way that it could never relate to a true cajun two-step led by an asthmatic accordion and sung in patois. The Carpenters featured the song, in an up-tempo pop version with country flourishes, on their 1973 album Now & Then. Their version was released as a single outside the United States in 1974 and sold well in the UK (peaking at number 12 in the charts) and Japan.Presented here as a brass quintet with up-tempo percussion, there is some resemblance of the Carpenters' cover, but also demands spectacular playing from all the players. Enjoy!

El Condor Pasa (If I Could)

(+)
Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1402823 Composed by Daniel Alomia Robles, Jorge Milchberg, and Paul Simon. Arranged by Alan Frazer (arranger) & Peet du Toit (orchestrator). Folk. 10 pages. Peet du Toit #986049. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1402823). This song started out as an Andean folk melody that Paul Simon came across in 1969 when he played a week-long engagement at a theater in Paris along with the South American group Los Incas, who played an instrumental version of the song called Paso Del Condor. Said Simon: I used to hang around every night to hear them play that. I loved it and I would play it all the time, and then I thought, Let's put words to it.The Peruvian songwriter Daniel Robles recorded this song in 1913, and copyrighted it in the United States in 1933 during his travels in America. When Simon recorded it with his added lyrics, he thought it was a traditional song, as that's what Los Incas told him. When Robles' son filed a lawsuit, Simon had to give Robles a composer credit on the song, with his estate getting those royalties. In discussing the song, Simon always talks about it as being based on a traditional Peruvian song, and we've never heard him mention Robles. This wasn't the first time Simon got tangled over songwriting credits on traditional melodies: Simon & Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair / Canticle was based on a folk song, but his arrangement came from a singer named Martin Carthy. Simon was always clear on his influences, but legal misunderstandings were a problem in these cases.Los Incas, who were the group that introduced Simon to the song, provided the instrumentation when they recorded it in Paris with Simon. Their leader, Jorge Milchberg, played a charango, which is an Andean string instrument made from the shell of an armadillo. Simon played acoustic guitar, and other members of Los Incas played flutes and percussion. When Simon brought the track to America, he added his lyrics. This was one of the easier songs to record for the Bridge Over Troubled Water album, since the backing track was already mixed together - it was just a matter of adding the vocals. The title translates to English as The Condor Passes. The lyrics Robles wrote to the song in 1913 are about returning home to his native Peru.Los Incas leader Jorge Milchberg got a composer credit on this song along with Simon and Robles. Milchberg later became the head of the group Urubamba and remained friends with Simon, who toured with them and produced their first American album. >>The Wainwright Sisters covered this for their 2015 Songs in the Dark album. Lucy Wainwright Roche explained to The Sun: I chose 'El Condor Pasa' because it was one of the first songs I ever learned to play on it guitar and it has a childlike quality to it, but it also has a darkness and sadness that fit in well with the album.Paul Simon performed this on both Sesame Street (in 1977) and The Muppet Show (in 1980).

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1149129 By John Coltrane. By John Coltrane. Arranged by Keith Terrett. 20th Century,Blues,Jazz,Multicultural,Standards,World. 11 pages. Keith Terrett #749258. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1149129). An arrangement of John Coltrane's classic Equinox for Brass Quintet with optional drum kit. Equinox is a minor blues jazz standard by American jazz saxophone player and composer John Coltrane. Originally released on Coltrane's Sound[ played in C# minor with a slow swing feel. However, it is usually played in the key of C Minor and often covered on the flute Coltrane’s wife Naima named the song Equinox. The equinox occur twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the sun. John Coltrane was born on September 23, 1926, the day of the official autumn equinox of that year. The release of Equinox was delayed until 1964 when Atlantic issued the album Coltrane’s Sound. Before he recorded it, Coltrane performed Equinox several times in live venues, including a session with Miles Davis’ rhythm section and at the 1960 Monterey Jazz Festival. Unfortunately, the other Atlantic recordings of Equinox were lost in the 1978 warehouse fire before they were released.Unlike Naima and My Favorite Things, Equinox would not become part of Coltrane's repertoire. Coltrane's attitude in writing Equinox is described by Dr Lewis Porter as Coltrane was a serious blues player and his blues pieces reflect the desire to get back to a primal mood, and away from the emotionally lighter, harmonically more complicated and complex blues of the boppers. Equinox is introduced by McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones with a Latin rhythmic passage which shifts into the slower tempo of the theme. The composition evokes a sense of mystery. Coltrane then enters on the horn (a tenor), his playing slow and pensive. The theme is repeated for two choruses and then stating the theme twice. He then proceeds with an improvisation of unusual emotional depth - reminiscent of a preacher exhorting his congregation. Elvin Jones make dramatic use of drum rolls and cymbal crashes throughout the song to maintain the sense of mystery. McCoy Tyner comps with a light feel.

The other band members wanted some beach music; hence, Beach Boys. (It should be noted that the surf's up seriously here only when there's a hurricane),Cash Box called 1964's I Get Around an exciting, tailored-for-teen-tastes hot rod stomper. Who can argue with that?I don't know if this one's a hot rod stomper -- it ain't fancy in any way -- but it's just the thing if you're playing for an audience drinking beer in the sunshine. If you'd like alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. It's Beginning To Look Like Christmas-Arranged for Brass Quintet by Jari Villanueva ?It?s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas? written in 1951 by Meredith Willson was originally titled ?It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas.? The song has been recorded by many artists, but was a hit for Perry Como and The Fontane Sisters with Mitchell Ayres and His Orchestra on September 10, 1951. Bing Crosby recorded which was also widely played. It was later incorporated into the pre-Broadway version of the score of Willson?s 1963 musical ?Here's Love? and can be heard on that show?s original cast recording, where it is sung in counterpoint to a new melody and lyric, ?Pinecones and Holly Berries.? Johnny Mathis recorded the song for his 1986 album Christmas Eve with Johnny Mathis. This version gained popularity after its inclusion in the 1992 film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tune and would be a great selection for a holiday concert or as a special presentation around Christmas. Included is a Full Score, 2 Trumpets in Bb, Horn in F, Trombone and Tuba. Also included are substitute parts for Eb Horn and Baritone TC A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Many of his arrangements can be found on Sheet Music Plus and JV MUSIC.

Keith Terrett #749261. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1149132). A classic arranged for Brass Quintet with optional drums. The chart features a fully written Louis style Trumpet solo. Enjoy!Hello, Dolly! is the title song of the popular 1964 musical of the same name. Louis Armstrong's version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.The music and lyrics were written by Jerry Herman, who also wrote the scores for many other popular musicals including Mame and La Cage aux Folles.History:Hello, Dolly! was first sung by Carol Channing, who starred as Dolly Gallagher Levi in the original 1964 Broadway cast. In December 1963, at the behest of his manager, Louis Armstrong made a demonstration recording of Hello, Dolly! for the song's publisher to use to promote the show. Hello, Dolly! opened on January 16, 1964, at the St. James Theatre in New York City, and it quickly became a major success. The same month, Kapp Records released Armstrong's publishing demo as a commercial single. His version reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, ending the Beatles' streak of 3 chart-topping hits in a row over 14 consecutive weeks. Hello Dolly! became the most successful single of Armstrong's career, followed by a Gold-selling album of the same name.[2] The song also spent nine weeks atop the adult contemporary chart shortly after the opening of the musical. The song also made Armstrong the oldest artist ever to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100 since its introduction in 1958. Billboard ranked the record as the No. 3 song of 1964, behind the Beatles' I Want to Hold Your Hand and She Loves You.Hello, Dolly! won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1965, and Armstrong received a Grammy for Best Vocal Performance, Male. Louis Armstrong also performed the song (together with Barbra Streisand) in the popular 1969 film Hello, Dolly!.Lyndon B. Johnson, often referred to by the moniker LBJ, used the tune, rechristened Hello, Lyndon!, as a campaign song for his run in the 1964 U.S. presidential election. This version of the song was performed by Carol Channing at that year's Democratic National Convention, and a recording was made by Ed Ames for distribution at the convention. The Sunflower controversy:Hello, Dolly! became caught up in a lawsuit which could have endangered plans for filming the musical. Mack David, a composer, sued for infringement of copyright, because the first four bars of Hello, Dolly! were the same as those in the refrain of David's song Sunflower from 1948. As he recounts in his memoirs, Herman had never heard Sunflower before the lawsuit, and wanted a chance to defend himself in court, but, for the sake of those involved in the show and the potential film, he reluctantly agreed to pay a settlement before the case would have gone to trial.

Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1122680). This easy arrangement for brass quintet was adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students due to the ease imposed on the piece; however, this does not preclude it from being played by professionals and music teachers. It is also ideal for academic recitals, weddings, student method and ceremonies that are arranged in the same way as the piece contains. The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part.

This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, is adapted from a piano version from one of those Reader's Digest compilations of old favorites. This rendition actually opens with By The Light Of The Silvery Moon from composer Gus Edwards in 1909. It was part of a Broadway show called Miss Innocence which lasted almost an entire two weeks before it shut down. The tune was more durable. It was sung by the Three Stooges (!) in a 1933 film, and Doris Day sang it in a 1953 movie for which the song provided the title. If you need different instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1410576 By Caetano Velosa. By Edward Eiscu, Gus Kahn, and Vincent Youmens. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Folk,Pop. 9 pages. Peet du Toit #992996. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1410576). (The) Carioca is a 1933 popular song with music by Vincent Youmans and lyrics by Edward Eliscu and Gus Kahn, as well as the name of the dance choreographed to it for the 1933 film Flying Down to Rio. It was sung in the film by Alice Gentle, Movita Castaneda and Etta Moten and danced by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as part of an extended production dance number illustrating the ballroom dance. The dance, which was choreographed by the film's dance director, Dave Gould, assisted by Hermes Pan, was based on an earlier stage dance with the same name by Fanchon and Marco. The word Carioca refers to inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro.Astaire and Roger's short dance has historical significance, as it was their first screen dance together. Though billed fourth and fifth, many felt they stole the film, which became a big hit for RKO. The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 7th Academy Awards, but lost to an even bigger Astaire and Rogers production number, The Continental from The Gay Divorcee (1934), their next film together and their first starring vehicle. They were billed by RKO as The King and Queen of 'The Carioca.'While the song has become a jazz standard, the dance did not have longevity. Following the success of Flying Down to Rio, an attempt was made to propagate it as a new ballroom dance, without much success. It was a mixture of samba, maxixe, foxtrot and rhumba. The distinctive feature of the dance â?? at least as portrayed in the movie â?? was that it was to be danced with the partners' foreheads touching.A French cover of the song was introduced in the comedy movie La Cité de la Peur (1994) along with a dance, also meant in a humoristic way. Both the song and the dance appear in the film that takes place in Cannes during the Cannes film festival in France, and have become a reference for a whole generation in France. 25 years later, in May 2019, the Carioca scene of the movie was celebrated in Cannes with a flashmob dance and by the actors themselves who danced again the mythic scene included in La Cité de la Peur.

Brass Quintet Euphonium,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1215110 By Keith Terrett. By Fredrik Pacius(1809-1891). Arranged by Keith Terrett. Multicultural,Patriotic,Praise & Worship,Traditional,World. 8 pages. Keith Terrett #811975. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1215110). The Finnish NA arranged for Brass Quintet. There also versions for String & full Orchestra in my two stores. The anthem lyrics were taken from a poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Swedish-speaking poet, called “VÃ¥rt land†(Our Land). The song was first sung in 1848 by a student group and became popular in Scandinavia and many of his patriotic poems, including VÃ¥rt land were used by promoters of Finnish nationalism. The poem was translated into Finnish some decades later, after VÃ¥rt land was well established as a national song, by Paavo Eemil Kajander and became the anthem before 1917 independence. Estonia‘s anthem, adopted 20 years later, has the same melody, however the last few lines do not repeat as they do normally in the Finnish anthem. Interestingly, the anthem has never been officially legislated as the Finnish anthem, but rather is traditionally used as the anthem. As such, there is no standard way to perform the 11-verse anthem, but usually the first and the last verses (as presented here) are sung. There sometimes arises a debate in Finland to change the anthem to Jean Sibelius’ song “Finlandia†(the melody was used in Biafra), a song recognized internationally as a symbol of Finland, but the general opinion seems to be for now to keep the current anthem. (One reason may be that Finlandia is harder to sing compared to Maamme.)Need an anthem fast?  They are ALL in my store! All my anthem arrangements are also available for Orchestra, Recorders, Saxophones, Wind, Brass and Flexible band. Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549857 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Easter,Sacred,Wedding. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #3556935. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549857). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Program this for church services during Easter or as a recital encore. Also great for Weddings. Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – like the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the guards singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears; it catches the listener off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First, Johann Sebastian Bach may be the greatest composer in music history. Indeed, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. People are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. His most famous vocal works seem to include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most notable are the St. John Passion and, indeed, the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and, above all, composers. Consequently, he first of all pursued a career as a church organist. As a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. He worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen for a while. Here, he probably developed his organ style and, likewise, his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here, he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his unique style. This new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach's works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. Â
