Prelude and Fugue in C BWV is taken from the Eight Short Preludes and Fugues, a collection of works for keyboard that were most likely used as teaching pieces for beginners. There has been back and forth about the attribution of these works, but most scholars agree that they are by Bach, just simplified for his students. Matthew McCrady has beautifully arranged this 4-5 minute work for Brass Quintet and included parts in C and B-flat for the Trumpets.

Published by Stephanie Daige (A0.796864). This little fugue is one of Bach's most famous and beloved keyboard works. Re-imagined for brass quintet, it is a challenging and fun setting for this fugue. The five instruments take turns entering with the subject of the fugue, and interplay back and forth with the other instruments. The timbres of the different instruments add a whole new textural dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach. I considered the need to breathe for each of these brass instruments, which obviously wasn’t an issue in the original version intended for organ. This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students,or professionals. It would do well in a chamber music concert, a church, or between acts of a larger ensemble concert,perhaps in another location of the auditorium while a (quiet!) set change is taking place. It would also work well as prelude or lobby music. The duration is just over three minutes (or longer if you prefer to take it slower). Each measure is numbered individually for convenience during rehearsals. I hope you will enjoy performing this piece as much as I have enjoyed arranging it! Published by WINDCREST (A0.945050). THEME, FUGUETTE and VARIATIONS on Lightly Row. Rarely has a song for children been so widely utilized and for such a long period of time. Written in the early 20th century, its wide-spread and successful use as a song for children can possibly be attributed to the construction of the melody itself. The melody starts with two descending intervals, each a minor third. These same qualities also made Lightly Row an excellent choice as a song for use with beginning instrumentalists. One might find it difficult NOT to find this song included in most published beginning-level instrument method books since the mid-20th century. This arrangement for brass quintet permits the performers to greatly expand upon the intervals and scale passage of the original song while exploring one of the more common composition forms, theme and variation with an excursion to a shortened version of another musical form, the fugue. An attempt has been made to provide interesting and challenging material for all members of the quintet. This selection could be performed at any point in a recital. It could be one of several featured selections performed in a concert with a programmatic theme of early 20th Century folk songs; or a portion of a concert where a theme and variation selection is desired. It might also serve as an encore to any recital or concert!

Each fugue is a masterpiece in its own right. Number 15 is an unfinished four-voice, quadruple fugue. Only the first three subjects are introduced, the third being a chromatic subject built from the letters of Bach’s name-B (B-flat), A, C, H (B-natural). Just at the point where all three subjects are combined, the manuscript breaks off, and C. P. E. Bach wrote in the score that the composer has died. Bach clearly intended that the original Art of Fugue theme was to be the final subject and all four themes would combine in a glorious climax. Whether he intended to finish the work or leave it up to others to complete is conjecture. About 8 minutes in length.

Elgar dedicated it to his friend, the author, and critic George Bernard Shaw. Some critics consider the Severn Suite to be Elgar’s best work in his later years, arguing that is a neglected masterpiece. The work is very Elgarian in the high Romantic style. It is fine music originally composed for brass by a famous acknowledged master that will be enjoyable for players and audiences alike.The duration of the full piece is around 16:30 and includes five movements, that follow each other without breaks: 1) Introduction (Worcester Castle) – Pomposo (2:10), 2) Toccata (the Tournament Grounds) - Allegro molto (4:20), 3) Fugue (The Cathedral) – Andante (3:00), 4) Minuet (in the Commandery) (5:00) – Moderato, and 5) Coda - Lento – Pomposo (2:00). The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565, is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous organ compositions. It follows a typical North German structure with three main sections - a free opening (toccata), a fugal section (fugue), and a short free closing section. The exact date of composition is uncertain, but it's believed to have been written before 1708. There is no surviving autograph manuscript. The oldest known source is an undated copy by Johannes Ringk, a student of one of Bach's pupils. Difficult. “Fugue for Brass Quintet†was composed in the fall of 2021 as a Christmas gift for Laurence Wagner, the number one fan of Gilded Music Press and Dr. Thrower’s compositions. Straying from Dr. Thrower’s customary programmatic titles and aural depictions, this five-minute fugue is absolute music. The subject (trumpet 1, measures 1-8) and countersubject (trumpet 1, measures 9-16) are present in some form—including inversions, augmentations, fragmentations, juxtapositions, and sequences—throughout the entire work. It would benefit the performers to analyze the material to some degree of detail to better bring out the important motifs. The modulations wander into a wide variety of keys, though there are no notated key changes due to the rapid harmonic rhythm. The first trumpet part extends to high D, in concert pitch toward the end of the fugue. It is recommended that the player of this part switch to a smaller instrument and transpose the ending. The horn part also reaches a professional level high range, to a written B-flat.
